Alls I know is that the history is very rich. Very rich indeed.

Fw was a big player back in those days. Gamblin, bootleggin, and all sorts of OG (Original Gangsta) stuff.

You could probably get more info. from City Vending. :D

The River Oaks Historical Society has the best information. They have a small Web site, but they would rather you come to their meetings.

My father knew some of the men that are mentioned in that book. Alot of them were in the vending business....very interesting times. He was about 18 at the time and saw a few "capers" as he called it...

I was particulary interested in a home at 5409 Jacksboro highway that is mentioned in the Gangsters & Gamblers book - I believe it was at one time the home of Helen Hutt? I can't remember for sure. It is a very large home, and because I love this stuff I just wondered if it really had a gambling facility? Or are there any other homes in the the area that did and are they still standing? Our neighbors were remodeling their home and when they removed some ceiling tiles they found playing cards, dice etc. in the ceiling. The person who had lived in this house years ago supposed had to leave the country for several years do to a murder or two he committed. This fascinates me to no end

Alls I know is that the history is very rich. Very rich indeed.

City Vending is the "mob" of the vending world. They deal in jukeboxes, pinballs, pool tables, cigarette machines and just about anything they can think of...if they get in your establishment and you become their account...they will own you...I know this because my Family's business is a competitor of theirs.. Most of the people that were the gansters of the day were in vending..it was a very good business...back in the day...A man who is in that book had a house over in rivercrest and the wallpaper was made of gold....NO LIE....24k gold weave in the design......

I have lots of information on crime on the Jacksboro hwy...more than
I have time to tell.

Just let me say briefly (maybe more later) that central to it all was
the FOUR DEUCES at 2222 Jacksboro Highway. It was an infamous
private gambling spot operated by Pat Kirkwood (owner of The Cellar
downtown) for the benefit of the rich and famous like Amon Carter,
Sid Richardson, H.L.Hunt, John Connally, LBJ, Sam Rayburn and most
of the local rich. Despite being illegal, it was allowed to operate
freely by local law groups...in fact employed FW police as security
guards. The police were also given costly gifts such as liquor
and turkeys in return for silence. Some researchers of the JFK
assassination believe that the assassination was planned at the
Four Deuces by LBJ and his rich cronies.

Much local crime was centered around the Jacksboro strip joints
such as the Skyliner and Rocket Club, and many murders took
place in the vicinity...involving Tincy Eggleston, DeLois Green
Herbert the cat Noble, and others.

The Fort Worth Public Library has a collection from the Rocket Club. It consists of candid photographs of the customers and publicity photographs of the various acts. The most interesting item is a memori from the head waitress which has information on a protection racket and other interesting tidbits.

What is Gangsters and Gamblers of Jacksboro Hwy? Is it a book or an article? I would be interested in reading it. Would also be interested in more info on City Vending. Are they still in business? Who actually owned or owns the business? I grew up in FW in the 50's and 60's, and it seems like I remember something about a gambling joint that had a fairly high class clientele that operated for a while and was finally shuttered in the 60's. Was that the 2222?

It's a book, of course right now I can't come up with the author's name. I've only read bits and pieces but it is very interesting about that part of our history. If you're in this area, it shouldn't be hard to find at all.

Hi there...sorry I have been out-of-town for several days. The person
you should talk to about this is Jim Marrs, veteran newsman and author.
Email Jim at:

Also try Googling Fort Worth Crime Jacksboro 2222 Club, Skyliner.

The local history section is in the basement towards the west end of the building. One of the staff posts on here from time to time and he and all of the staffers are very helpful and knowledgeable. They got some great stuff down there. Worth a trip.
