I have time to tell.
Just let me say briefly (maybe more later) that central to it all was
the FOUR DEUCES at 2222 Jacksboro Highway. It was an infamous
private gambling spot operated by Pat Kirkwood (owner of The Cellar
downtown) for the benefit of the rich and famous like Amon Carter,
Sid Richardson, H.L.Hunt, John Connally, LBJ, Sam Rayburn and most
of the local rich. Despite being illegal, it was allowed to operate
freely by local law groups...in fact employed FW police as security
guards. The police were also given costly gifts such as liquor
and turkeys in return for silence. Some researchers of the JFK
assassination believe that the assassination was planned at the
Four Deuces by LBJ and his rich cronies.
Much local crime was centered around the Jacksboro strip joints
such as the Skyliner and Rocket Club, and many murders took
place in the vicinity...involving Tincy Eggleston, DeLois Green
Herbert the cat Noble, and others.

What is Gangsters and Gamblers of Jacksboro Hwy? Is it a book or an article? I would be interested in reading it. Would also be interested in more info on City Vending. Are they still in business? Who actually owned or owns the business? I grew up in FW in the 50's and 60's, and it seems like I remember something about a gambling joint that had a fairly high class clientele that operated for a while and was finally shuttered in the 60's. Was that the 2222?
It's a book, of course right now I can't come up with the author's name. I've only read bits and pieces but it is very interesting about that part of our history. If you're in this area, it shouldn't be hard to find at all.

My father knew some of the men that are mentioned in that book. Alot of them were in the vending business....very interesting times. He was about 18 at the time and saw a few "capers" as he called it...
I am doing a project on Jacksboro Hwy in the 40's and 50's. Do you think he would be willing to help me find some people to talk to or talk to me himself. Please let me know it would be much appreciated.

Hi there...sorry I have been out-of-town for several days. The person
you should talk to about this is Jim Marrs, veteran newsman and author.
Email Jim at:

The Fort Worth Public Library has a collection from the Rocket Club. It consists of candid photographs of the customers and publicity photographs of the various acts. The most interesting item is a memori from the head waitress which has information on a protection racket and other interesting tidbits.
Max
How would you go about finding that stuff? It's been a long time since I've been to the downbtown Library.
