While reading a book titled "The President Travels by Train" The author told the story of President Roosevelt's secret trip in April 1943 to Monterrey, Mexico for a visit with Mexico's president. On his return to the US the president visited the Corpus Christi Naval Air Center and then his train left for Benbrook.

The train arrived at Benbrook at 945 am April 22, 1943 and cars were sent to transport members of the party to Ft Worth while the president and Mrs Roosevelt went to their son Elliot's "Dutch Brand Ranch" to spend the day.

The train went to the railroad shops for servicing and repairs and returned to Benbrook at 630 pm that evening and the president reboarded at 925 pm to continue West. Mrs. Roosevelt stayed at the ranch.
They said security was tight and that two men were shocked, when during a telephone conversation, one mentioned to the other Roosevelt was in the area and a voice broke in and told him to shut up.

I knew that Elliot Roosevelt married a girl from Ft Worth. What I am wondering is;
1. Where is or was the Dutch Brand Ranch
2. What did Elliot do besides ranching when he lived here
3. When did he leave the area.

I'm sure old Amon Carter managed to be part of that day, April 22, 1943.

Dutch Branch Ranch sits mostly under Benbrook Lake today, I believe.

When Elliott Roosevelt was here, I believe that along with Amon Carter he was one of the owners of WBAP. I need to check my books on this to make sure my memory is correct, though.

I'm not sure when he left, but I think it was during the war.

Right on all accounts!

Here is a photo of the president with his grandchildren at the Dutch Branch ranch house.

The City of Benbrook website history pages have some pretty good info on the ranch, that sat on the eastern side of what is now the lake, near St. Francis Village. Elliott Roosevelt was at one time the president of the Texas State Network (Radio), and I seem to remember that WBAP was the "Flagship" station. He moved away in 1944 according to the Benbrook history.

I think there may be another thread that mentions another Roosevelt who lived in Lake Worth (Kermit?) but I can't locate it right now, may be from somewhere else. I did a real quick search in some Time Magazine archives and was surprised to see that when Fort Worth was mentioned during the 1940's, there was apparently no need to specify Texas. That would seem to imply that Fort Worth did a better job of marketing itself then than now.

...and this is why we now have the Roosevelt Special at the Original Mexican restaurant on Camp Bowie. Most people don't know the Roosevelt family had ties here.

Since we're swappin' yarns about the Roosevelts, "Dalworthington Gardens" has strong ties to the family:

"In the spring of 1933, Carl G. Mosig bought his I5-acre homestead on Arkansas Lane. His wife, Lelia, explains, 'There was no Dalworthington Gardens. Arkansas Lane was, as the name implies, a simple country lane'. While working in Fort Worth, Carl met Elliott Roosevelt, who married a local girl. Elliott, son of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, brought his mother, Eleanor, to visit Mosig one day. Active in the subsistence homestead program initiated by her husband, she expressed interest in the vacant land south of Mosig's place. "Soon I learned that Elliott's mother had established one of her idealistic colonies next to my home: Dalworthington Gardens;' ninety-one year old Mosig proudly recalls."

This is from: http://www.cityofdwg.net/history.html

By the way, the name "Dalworthington" is an amalgamation of "Dal" las, Fort "Worth," and Arl "ington." smile.gif

Speaking of the Original, when visiting last year (I'm in Ohio now) and I always eat at the Original I was talking to one of the waitresses and apparently two of the cooks there have been there over 30 years, one over 40 plus years - and the food still tastes as good as ever.

The ranch was later owned by Sid Richerson. I think the estate still has it.

When we lived in Fort Worth in the 1950s there was a large white two-story house on the north side of US 377 just east of the bridge over Dutch Branch that my father always pointed out as the home of Mrs. Googin, who married Eliot Roosevelt. I have always presumed that was the Dutch Branch Ranch. Dad moved to Fort Worth with his parents in 1904, grew up there, and worked there for the U.S. Bureau of Public Roads in the 1920s and early 1930s, so I think he knew what he was talking about.
