Fort Worth gets the 32nd NBA franchise. There is a "name - a - team" contest, asking Fort Worthians to select the name for the team. Here are the suggestions:

- Aviators

For Fort Worth's aviation history and originality.

- Bandits

Generic name usually associated with the Old West.

- Cougars

In recognition of "Panther City", only using "cougar" to be more original (no other major pro sports francise in America as that name).

- Cyclones

Named for the city being prone to tornadoes and being located in "Tornado Alley".

- Fire

In honor the former pro hockey team with the same name.

- Firemen

In honor of the city's firefighters.

- Flyers

For Fort Worth's aviation history and the former NBA D-League team with the same name.

- Jackrabbits

A more "Western specific" animal with originality added.

- Outlaws

Named for The Wild Bunch.

Why not just straight Panthers? Already taken in the NFL and NHL, but Cougars doesn't exactly have the best connotations attached to it.

RD-I laughed a bit at Cow Punchers :)

I'd say Panthers> Outlaws> Cyclones> Aviators.

Anything but Flyers - the Philly Flyers are my despised rivals! Oh wait... that's back when there was an NHL!!

Has anyone else considered the possibility of Fort Worth, perhaps with a new convention center stadium, getting a WNBA team?

WNBA is quite possibly MOST likely to happen out of all pro sports in this country.... too bad it's the least demanded.

The "outlaws" is a great name. Not sure where the arena would be. Maybe off the west of the the river near 35 south of 121.

I also had a great idea for a WNBA team.

Of all the ways I think that the city should spend money doing, a stadium for a professional sporting corporation is at the bottom of my list. Not that I am against professional sports per se, but they are private businesses and should build their own "plants". The infrastructure is already in place in downtown; and if a professional sporting league wants to do business in Fort Worth, the league(s) can purchase the convention center, renovate it for use by their team(s).

By the way, I believe that this topic has been discussed in a Forum tread created sometime ago "Professional Sports and Recreational Activities"

Well, I do have a site in mind (BTW, there will not be a new arena for the Convention Center. Just more space)....

I know what some of you are already thinking with the TWC and a few other buildings in this black rectangle being replaced and all.... buuuuuut if you've seen my skyscraper/high rise concepts, you could probably tell where I'd put those.

It's not really happening (now, anyway), but this is just my thinking of where an NBA/NHL level arena could be placed. It's in downtown and facing Lancaster, which I know will be built as another entertainment/mixed-use center of activity someday.

As for that WNBA team, what did you have in mind?

I am feeling the site for the NBA/NHL facility.  It got great TRE and freeway access as well as could be a stop on the "Spur" Line if its ever extended down Lancaster/Camp Bowie.

I always said if I had the money, I would start a WNBA team called either the Fort Worth "Divas" or the Fort Worth "Foxes".  Of course they would have blinged-out jerseys.  I thought the names could come across to be a bit sexist at first but according to several female and male friends and associates they think the concept is pretty cool; even stating that everyone would want to play for the team and buy the teams associated swag, lol.  Originally, the team was called the Divas and the cheerleaders were the foxes, but I am not quite sure if they have cheerleaders WNBA.  I think both names work well.

I think MLS and WNBA would suit FW very well.

Great job Jeriat! I would though like to see the color scheme be similar to my Dunbar Flying Wildcats.  :swg:

Not BBall, but you can offer some ideas on naming FW's NPSL team.

By the way, I voted Outlaws and Liberators.

How about Fortress ?
not The Fortress, just Fortress.
Fortress Football Club or Fortress F.C.

It reminds me of the premiere league team Arsenal.

Take your pick from the aircraft Consolidated / GD / Lockheed have built in Fort Worth over the years:

Liberators, Dominators, Hustlers, Fighting Falcons, ... Aardvarks...
