UNTHSC updated their master plan last year. It's gone under my radar but i just recently ran across it. It's a very extensive and thorough document, with 206 pages. Here's he gist -

Uk4iklk.jpg

This basically shows the campus at full build out. The near term will focus on new structures along Camp Bowie, most of which are surface parking, with the gateway building at Montgomery being a highlight. This near term expansion is expected over 10 years and would add nearly half a million sqft to the 1.1 million sqft already on campus. At full buildout the campus would have about 2.3 million sqft and 3,250 parking spaces, up from 1,186 now.

Here is a watercouler aerial of the campus at full build out,

The full (very large) document can be accessed at https://www.untsyste...master_plan.pdf

This plan looks great. Love that a new building will go up at Montgomery and Camp Bowie.

I noticed that Saint-Emilon would be replaced.

If it came to that, they could take up the old "Backwoods" spot...

Something I did not know is that UNT already owns that building, they lease it back to Emilon. That area would be among the last to be developed, so I think Saint-Emilon is good for the next quarter century at least.

I really quite like the new building at Camp Bowie and Clifton and these renderings make it look as if that's a style they're looking to continue. This seems like a huge win, especially with the Montgomery/Camp Bowie intersection on the "near term" horizon!

I am excited about the expansion of this campus.  At the same time I am concerned, what with the expected increase in student/staff population and parking spaces, about its impact on the traffic scheme in the area.  It's becoming more and more congested, especially at rush hour.  And the congestion problem is exacerbated by the slowness of the signal changes at the Lancaster/Camp Bowie/Montgomery intersection.

Good point about KC's streetcar, of course, because the area traffic congestion at Lancaster/Camp Bowie/Montgomery may only get worse as the NTHSC campus grows.  The streetcar proposed years ago, and shot down by short-sided decision makers, would have helped alleviate some of the congestion, maybe.  I think I minimized my point about the slow signal changes at the major intersection.  I understand why the signals are slow, it's having to cope with the traffic confluence on three major thoroughfares.  I think the major culprit is the intersection itself.  What, if anything, can be done about that intersection?

[I know this is diverging from the NTHSC master plan topic but it is a potential, if indirect, ramification of campus expansion]

This may be unpopular, but the best thing to do may be to shut down Bailey and the western portion of West 7th. Make it a traditional four way intersection.

Unfortunately, that would make it difficult for a streetcar to run through the middle of the UNTHSC campus.

But, removing two of the six streets approaching the intersection would dramatically reduce red light durations.

I've often thought about that same idea and I would go so far as to say that just closing Bailey between 6th and 7th might make enough of a difference to improve the flow at the intersection (even if it is likely the least traveled of the streets, it would still reduce light times).  As for a streetcar line, couldn't it run down 7th and transition to Camp Bowie at University?

Am I the only one underwhelmed by this?

https://www.utsouthw...about-us/facts/

as of 2018, here's a snapshot of UTSW:

Physical Plant Building Space (gross square feet) 14 million

Projects under construction (approx. square feet) 1.6 million

Projects in planning or design (approx. square feet) 1.2 million

I just thought UNT had bigger plans.

Good find and good point.  I hope that UNTHSC grows substantially more.  They could go more vertically than as shown in plans.  The only place they shouldn't is on the far western edge but otherwise, they could take it up to 10-12 stories (or more).

Does the UTSW campus include clinical buildings or is that all academic?  I think UNTHSC is going to be all academic (not clinical) on that campus.

I think you are correct.  I believe UNTHSC is more a teaching institution than is UT-Southwestern, which has a medical research-orientation.  Someone correct me if I'm mistaken.

I, for one, thought about a competitive "rivalry" in the health care industry among the universities in North Texas:  UNTHSC in Fort Worth; Baylor and UT-Southwestern in Dallas.  But each campus has different needs and different plans to fulfill those needs.  Financial resources to allow for capital expansion may make a difference--the UT system is larger than the UNT system.  Availability of space for expansion may also be contributing factor.  Does UNT have the available land?  I agree with you that UNTHSC should grow more vertically than horizontally.

I like your idea and I have actually proposed that scenario before on the Forum. You can still use the streetcar on the closed portion because it can be made into a streetcar only lane. They have similar streets like that in SF where I used to livewhere a streetcar could enter but not cars.

I think Montgomery should definitely remain open to cars, but could be narrowed to two lanes of vehicular traffic, with raised crosswalks, a lot of curb space for rideshare/bus plus protected bike lanes. Having a streetcar run from Downtown to UNTHSC, south to Dickies Arena, would be awesome.

Also, enabling higher density along 7th St, Camp Bowie, and generally on the periphery of Monticello would be a good idea to enable more walkable options for students, faculty, etc.

A work crew and crane are attaching a new logo to the top of the EAD building (Everett Administration Building).
Logo printed onto dark grey cladding tiles.

It would be super cool if UNT clad the entire building with the grey tiles !!

University President Dr. Michael Williams said: "Our new logo is designed to make clear who and what we are. Yes, were part of the UNT System, but no we're not located in Denton. A few years ago, the school where my wife was working at the time went into a full lockdown with a similar police response after a passing motorist reported that a man with a gun was walking into the front door.  It was an armored car driver.  In full uniform.  Making a regular run to the cafeteria for a pick up.  I'm all for vigilance and saying something if you see something, but sometimes people don't use common sense.

I have a habit of being maybe too vigilant sometimes or maybe just watch too much True Crime TV.  I spend some time on the Trinity Trails and one day a few years back, I was over by Greenwood Cemetery and looked across the river towards the opposite river bank by Rockwood Golf Course and spotted what appeared as a perfectly wrapped body in a tarp just off the river bank.  I tried to ignore it but it just kept nagging at me and the river had been sort of high during that time so I convinced myself that's what it was.  I thought about getting the police involved but knew I better make sure this is the real deal before I waste their time or have egg on my face.  I went back the next day over to the Trailhead at Isbell Rd and Brookside Dr. (which I never ever go to), parked my car and quickly road my bike cross country to the body.  It only took a minute or two through some low grass and as I got closer, I just gave it a light kicked it turned out it was a plastic tarp that the grounds crew used to cover the greens they had neatly wrapped in the shape of a body and must have blown off too the side. My heart was racing for sure.  I felt a bit embarrassed for myself but kind of glad I checked it out in person before dialing 911. Oddly enough, back over at the trailhead I spotted an individual counting a thick wad of cash by the water inlet structure, so I did not stick around long nor make small talk.

Similar story while I'm on the subject... a few years back, one of my regular start or turnaround spots is the Trinity Trails Southwest 183 Trailhead (the one with the parking lot under the bridge) and I've seen some sketchy things over there in the past but this time I kept smelling "death" off to the far south end of the parking lot / river bank.  There was another regular that uses that lot to do his parking / biking and I told him, "hey this sounds crazy, but I think there's a body dumped off the edge of the bank over in the tallgrass."  And he was like, yeah that sounds really crazy but I think you're right.  So we went over to investigate it and sure enough there was a small body wrapped in a sheet in the tallgrass but I went and got a stick to see what we were dealing with and turns out it was a dog.  Still sad and unfortunate, but maybe slightly less criminal in nature.  I called it in to the city animal control as a non-emergency and a guy came out the next day with the animal clean-up crew and called me for details where it was.

I know I'm being a little harsh with the use of "common sense".  Given the events of the last few days, being overly vigilant around a university campus is probably a good practice.  The armored car driver incident, while not entirely without some merit, was a little much.

I actually find it hard to believe any non-police officer is allowed on campus with a gun unless legislation passed allowing that?  Anyone with a (visible) gun on an occupied school campus should be looked at with extra scrutiny especially if that person is far from where the armored vehicle is parked or not a police officer in a recognizable police issued uniform for the school's PD or local PD.  How many movies and TV shows have you seen where someone just puts on a security guard outfit, body armor etc and commits a crime?  I've seen some armored car drivers at gas stations that look like a guy with military pants and a jacket on carrying a bag...it looks sort of official but also looks like just a guy walking around with a gun and a bag until I put two and two together when I see the truck or van.

A tripod bag closely resembles a rifle bag ... Better the embarrassment of a false alarm than the regret of not averting a tragedy.
