Does anyone know where Brous Private School was located?  The school (kindergarten/preschool) was in operation in the late 1940s.  As I recall somewhere close to the old Paschal High School.  Any help much appreciated.

Have you done a search on "Brous Private School"? It should reveal some things.

Ghost - looking for location address of school in late 1940's / early 1950's.  I did follow your link (thank you),  judging by attendance dates of alumni seems to be in 50s and 60s.  Thank you for your input, I'm still looking!

Try the city directories at the downtown library. Way in the back in the local history department.

Ghost - I think you are spot on with that recommendation.  I'm from Fort Worth (later lived in Lake Worth) but actually live in Australia now.  However, I will be visiting Texas in a few months and will try the library!  I haven't lived in Ft Worth area since 1961.  I look forward to visiting the 'new' (to me) library.  When I was in elementary school (Carroll Peak) I visited the Fort Worth Public library (the 'old' one) at least once a week.  In conjunction with those library visits as a youth, I would usually get into the Flat Iron building and have a chili dog!!!  I'm talking late 1940s!

Twebb, I remembered the name when you asked the question, but I could not remember the location.  I don't know when they closed, but I also was not around in 1949.

At the central library yesterday I looked through a selection of old telephone directories and got the following:

1930        Brous Private Kindergarten, School of Expression          1422 Pa. (Pennsylvania Avenue?)

1934                           "                       , Private School                     525 S. Henderson

1940                                                           "                                               "

1945                                                           "                                     1006 College

1950                                                           "                                             "

1955                                                           "                                             "

1960                                                           "                                     1000 College

1965                                                           "                                     1006 College, also a River Oaks location at 1818 Robert's Cut-off.

Ghost,

Thank you for the additional information, much appreciated!  As indicated before, I used Ancestry.com and found their City Directories often incomplete (pages missing) or not covering all the years fro a certain county/city

I'm sure your experience with City Directories is much more extensive than mine.  What would be your thoughts on the source data for City Directories?  The reason I ask, I am trying to determine where I lived in Fort Worth between 1944 and 1949.  Searching the family name in the Fort Worth City Directories available Ancestry.com I had no hits,  However, I attributed this to the fact that we were "renters" in those years and probably the "owner" would be listed fort a particular address.

I know the general area (e.g. - around Brous school, around May Street Baptist church, etc.), but do not recall any street name or numbers.  During that time frame my mother did not drive, had no phone and I'm guessing didn't vote.  So I'm at a loss as to what records to be looking at!!

I welcome your input!

Ted

I don't recall if Census records would list street addresses, but I'd definitely check those if you lived in Fort Worth on a decade change.

Andy,

My inspection of census records lead me to believe that such records are based on street addresses!

I was looking at the 1940 census records online for my grandparents.  I found them knowing their street address.  I believe Ancestry.com has the census records scanned to where they can 'search' the record by residents name. The census records provide much more information than a city directory.  But that information is dated and only taken every ten years!

Cheers!

Andy,

As a follow-up to my previous reply.  I just did a search of my grandmother on Ancestry.com.  One of the hits was from the 1940 Federal Census, she was listed as "wife" and not "head", as my grandfather was.

I don't believe the 1950 census will be made public until around 2022 - 2025.  I forgot if the delay is 75 or 72 years.

Ted

If I'm not mistaken, city directories were compiled by sending survey-takers door to door to ask residents their names, spouses, occupations, rent or own, all kinds of nosey stuff that wouldn't fly today. It was a much more guileless time...

Ghost - in a previous reply you mentioned that you looked through old telephone directories at the central library.

Would the central library also hold copies of the Ft Worth/Tarrant city directories?

Where is the central library now located?

I haven't used the Fort Worth Public Library since 1960, at that time I recall the library was across from city hall and close to the Flat Iron building.  Last time I visited downtown Ft Worth (about three years ago) there was a parking lot in that location!

Have you had any dealings with the Fort Worth Independent School District, Billy Sills Center for Archives on 2720 Cullen?

Central's address is 500 West Third Street. The local history and genealogy section is on the lower floor way back in the west end. They do have city directories back to the 19th century. I tried to post a link to them but I can't seem to do that on this computer at the Benbrook library.

The old library has been a parking lot for forty years now. Sad, but even that one stood on the site of a still earlier Carnegie library.

I went to the FWISD archives once and got a tour of it. I was interested in yearbooks; a hobby of mine is looking for local yearbooks and donating them to the FWPL.

Ghost - Thank you for that very helpful information!  That old library was my 'Mecca' when I was a kid.  Also visited Barbours(sp) Book Store very often!!

A few years ago on a quick visit to downtown Fort Worth the old Barbours Book Store sign was still up, but I'm not sure when the site was being used for.  Looking in the window seemed like some sort of training facility!!
