I mean if Austin can't even get a decent light rail system going then what chance do we have...

Austin city council approves light rail finance plan

Project Connect vote: Austin residents pass $7.1 billion transit plan

success-2_5-img_map_cmta-system-plan-app

Not disagreeing with most of what you said, but... there's a way.

I will disagree with you saying "Light Rail in FW will not happen in any of OUR lifetimes", though.

Here is the new proposed map circulated this year (2023)

https://npr.brightsp...-2.20.17 PM.png

Sorry it is a png vs pic.

To briefly list the differences, cost dropped from $7 Billion to $4.5-$5 Billion. North leg terminates at 38th Street vs North

Lamar Transit Center, south leg terminates at Oltorf vs Stassney, east leg terminates at Yellow Jacket vs the airport parking garage.

No tunnels or elevated guideways, all at grade within existing streets or roads with new dedicated Colorado River bridge.

There really wasn't a good place to place this link, so I have put it here.  Trinity Metro has a webcam up aimed at the Fort Worth Central Station.  The link is below:

The additional $8k for the digital ink signs however does seem high.

Eh, not really. I'm guessing the smart display itself is about $3-4k for a weatherized/ruggedized unit, with the remainder of the cost being the installation, mounting hardware and hookups (electricity and connectivity, whether to a WiFi hub or hardwired).

Very exciting! I'm curious how ridership will be. I'll def jump on the bus a few more times next month.

Update: I have not seen a noticeable increase of passengers riding TEXRail to / from DFW airport this month despite rides being free.

I wonder if there's been any increase on the TRE or buses...

I'm thinking it may be a good idea to change the name of this thread to "Trinity Metro," since this has essentially become the thread for the agency.

Does anyone agree or object?

I've HAD to ride the bus lately, and there were a decent amount of passengers.

But that was the 2 on Camp Bowie and 51 on Bryant Irvin, which I believe are higher ridership lines, in comparisons to others. So I don't have a great gauge on that.

I don't have any problems with the name change.

Haven't ridden the bus here, but if I had to guess maybe its because 2 and 51 actually go to useful places, like a full collection of all the major grocery and big box retail chains present in the region, and a hospital. Unlike other routes which start some old neighborhood with a dropping population and then go directly to some corner of downtown.

Looking at a map, its unfortunate that 51 doesn't go further down Harris Parkway as it would get to more medical offices and services.

Yeah, I mean one of those is the primary crosstown route for the west side of town, so of course it's well used.

6 and 51 you could say are the major carriers for the southwest side, and each time I've rode the bus around here, there was a decent amount of people on.

Well, I agree, I see waiting for the bus over the by Tom Thumb on Camp Bowie all the time, and I noticed they are redoing the bus shelters, getting rid of the green ones and putting in these new glass and silver metal variants.

I noticed that, too. They've invested more in ACTAUL bus shelters... but still have a ways to go, of course.

Did they end up rolling out those $8,000 digital ink iPads at the bus stops with the route status info?

I only saw them in passing by. Didn't really see them up close.

Trinity Metro updated the ridership dashboard. November, with free fares, saw huge gains in ridership. The whole system saw 679,000 riders in October, and that went up to 780,000 riders in November. TEXRail hit a post-covid high 83,000 riders. Route 89 saw a hige increase from 67,000 in Oct to 97,000 in November. TRE did not seem to have as much of a bump but still did good numbers.

Update: It did seem like TEXRail ridership went up in December... and trains still seem a bit busier now than when I posted that. It appears free fares didn't do much.

Some select slides from Trinity Metro Board mtg: https://ridetrinitymetro.org/meetings/

Route No. 5 is being considered for an upgrade to every 15 mins, joing 1, 2, 4, 6, 15, 25, 89 (Spur) and Dash. Not long ago, only 1, 2, 15 and 89 were every 15 minutes.

However, 4 other routes are being eliminated.

The changes would take effect in September.

There are also some proposed fare changes that simplify the whole system. This would actually reduce TEXRail and day pass prices and you could do fare capping.

And there's also a plan for a connection to from SEFW to Downtown to Alliance utilizing Coach buses
