I've noticed that the east-west running streets of the downtown FW grid align nearly perfectly to the setting sun during the winter solstice, when the sun is setting furthest south, and vice versa for the summer solstice.
Is this a coincidence? Is there a reason the downtown grid isn't due east/west?

My guess would be the grid was set based on the course of the river.

Most towns in Texas were laid out in the 1800's to have the streets parallel and perpendicular to the river. That was more or less the planning principles in effect at that time.

Well, December 21st will be a good time to take pictures of the sunset anyway, since it will be right down the middle of the street.
