Frankly, I don't think too many people will ever walk to their cancer treatments.

If they ride the bus and are let off at the street, it is more comfortable to have the door on the street rather than set behind rows of cars.

And, if the employees are to walk out to lunch, assuming restaurants arrive nearby, it should be designed to accommodate the staff, visitors, and families of patients to comfortably access the surrounding district on foot of bicycle if they choose.

 

And Keven is right - how it sits on the site really affects how a building feels to pedestrians.  Much has been written on why.

Looks like actual work might be starting up again soon. There's a lift onsite and some new containers which were brought in a few weeks ago. I actually saw a couple trucks and a handful of people over on the sidewalk this morning, but they could have been from the apartments across the street. It looks like they are getting ready to do some paving (finally!).

Construction will be underway this spring on the facility, which will include a dramatically overhauled facade over the previously planned building.

This Classified ad has a bunch of the details of what is going to be done. The new design has many similar features of the Moncrief Cancer Institute.

I'm glad they are doing this. The Moncrief Institute is a very nice building that adds to the quality of the neighborhood. I'm happy to see this extending to other areas of southside.

Are those renderings of the building that was already under construction that they bought?  If so, it appears they will be removing the tower that was built on top.

The entrance is being reconfigured without the tower.  The look of the building will be completely different than what was originally planned.

The rendering does not match the site plan very well, especially at the southeast corner.

 

The copper roof of the existing tower element came down within the last few days.

The site plan appears to show the old layout for sure. Good indication of what lots and all are in play here though.

The exterior is being framed and sheathed now. Quite a bit of progress on one day. When I drove by yesterday morning it was still just a bare structure.

The "tower" didn't really mean a lot to me, but it seems very wasteful to have gone to all that labor and material to just take it down.

Maybe they wanted a unity of design with the Moncrief Cancer Center to try to build their brand in Fort Worth (both are UT Southwestern, right?)

If you look closely on the third floors ceiling you can see the shape of the former tower. They simply added more steel around it to make it fit.

Doohickie, you are correct.  After they purchased this site, the articles stated they wanted the building to look similar to the Moncrief Cancer Center.  Both are UT Southwestern. 

 

Yes, it was a little wasteful to remove the tower, but as Austin stated, they framed around what was already built with new steel.

I'm curious how long it will be before the land to the north is built on. Until then, it would be a great place for another pop up park, similar to the one at Magnolia and Henderson.

UTSW is doing a lot of land grabbing East and North of the Moncreif Cancer Center. They're slowly grabbing the neighborhood east of May st towards S Main and tearing down the homes in the process.

I was curious if UTSW had any expansion plans and did some digging in the UT Board of Regents meetings. Nothing about new buildings (in the last year anyway) but there was an item in the August agenda for a renovation of some shell space here,

 

 

U. T. Southwestern Medical Center plans to establish primary care service in Fort Worth at the

Monty and Tex Moncrief Medical Center (MMC). The anticipated number of patients served in

the Western region of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex is expected to grow significantly in the

next 10 years and the associated growth in imaging volume will rapidly exceed current imaging

capacity.

The proposed project will renovate shell space at the current facility and furnish it with imaging

equipment to ensure that the MMC scales to meet the forecasted demand and improve access

to imaging services for patients in Fort Worth.
