Today is Fort Worth's Birthday!  The city was founded on June 6, 1849.  For a great look at historic photographs, go to the UTA Library's Website to search for Fort Worth's photographs.

Bud Kennedy's S-T column seems appropriate here, rather than in the "Image of Fort Worth" thread, because he delves a bit into Fort Worth's history, albeit along the theme, "Where the West Begins."  I enjoyed reading his article.  I suppose Abilene has a more cactus-and-sagebrush environment than does Fort Worth, but I never heard anyone pin the label "Where the West Begins" on Abilene (then, again, George Hamilton IV thought Abilene was the prettiest town he'd ever seen back in 1963, and no one else has sung any songs about Fort Worth, that I know of).

Thanks for George Strait settin' me straight about Fort Worth.  As for the "Downtown" parody, uh-huh.

Another year has rolled around and today is Fort Worth's 169th birthday.  Next year is a big one -- 170!

....  Major Khleber Miller Van Zandt purchased over 600 acres west of the newly formed town of Fort Worth between 1871 and 1873.  Van Zandt donated the land for Trinity Park, Will Rogers, and other civic sites in the Cultural District.  I think leaving the name alone is very appropriate, considering Van Zandt's contribution to Fort Worth's history.  We have plenty of other bridges we can name for other Fort Worthians.

The youngest grandson of KM Van Zandt has died.....

Fort Worth quietly removes Van Zandt memorials.

BTW, Happy 300th Birthday to San Antonio.
