Nitixope, that's exactly what they used on the exterior. My concerns about it have been the same as yours, except that I would add that you should not use a floor tile on a wall surface. I wouldn't worry about the weight of the tile. The building was over designed and built to last. I do not know the backstory on the facade. Maybe one day, I will ask the building owner.

Wow. They have had a rough go. They were supposed to open up in River District and that never happened and now this quick closing.

I went once and really enjoyed the space and the coffee. I blame myself for not taking more trips there - shoot!

You should have gone more often.
The River District location was a problem from the beginning. Not only did I prepare the construction documents for the finish out of Lazy Daisy, I also revised the drawings to be a second location for Boozie's. The landlord there was difficult, and I think that is one of the reasons the building is still vacant.

The River District location of Lazy Daisy Coffee seemed to be a slightly risky location IMO since has
1) high(ish) speed vehicular traffic - slow is better for retail sales.
2) limited residential density within its logical close-by trade area. Residential density has improved dramatically but still fairly modest esp taking into account those with more modest incomes are less likely to routinely pay $7+ for high margin coffee drinks.
3) limited commercial destinations immediately around. Its prob not on enough people's daily errand patterns.
could be wrong but IMO that was mostly an amenity for residential and without subsidy from landlord, would take a really special kind of company operating there who can pull patrons out of their way.

The current version of Boozie's was only in operation for four months. The previous version of the restaurant, Wild Acre Brewing Co. opened right before Covid-19 hit.

Consider it job security at this point, John!

I could be off base, but IMO the name certainly do it any favors... sounds like a place to get tanked, not a place for an awesome sandwich

I agree with you on the name. However, the S-T is reporting that Boozie's will be moving to the old Star-Telegram Printing Building in Edgecliff Village.
The paper is also reporting that another Halbach-Dietz design, the Houston Street Bar & Patio will be closing soon.

I wonder if there's subtle design decisions that an architect or owner could make to a project that would potentially self-sabotage a business? I'm thinking about very subtle, yet annoying things that I've encountered in restaurants that make me question if I ever want to go back:
1) Extremely lively acoustics. There some design decisions with hard surfaces or lack of sound dampening material that make a place so loud and annoying you can't even think not to mention have a conversation.
2) Uncomfortable seating. There was this pizza place off of Trinity Blvd and 360 I can't remember the name (Double Dave's maybe?) but we would have a group meet over there from time to time on like a Tuesday night and they had these built-in wooden bench booths with the most awkward pitch to them. It felt like a near 45-degree pitch on the back with a slight pitch to the seat. I think I made it about an hour and my back, butt and legs had enough.
3) Parking stalls that are unusually too narrow or hard to pull into. I came out of a Dickies BBQ in Dallas Medical District and the guy next to me was so close, I had to crawl though the passenger's side of my car. I tried to figure out if it was him or me but I think it was collectively the parking lot and mostly him, of course.
4) Restrooms that are placed immediate next to a dining room. This didn't happen to me but someone told me a story of a smaller diner / lunch place where someone had quite the explosive bathroom situation, it was hard not to hear what was happening.
5) Lack of airlock entry vestibule. I was in a restaurant on a rather cold day and when that door opened just a ton of cold air would rush in. No one was comfortable, not the staff or customers.
6) A kitchen that is not well vented or that you end up smelling like what is cooked after you leave.
7) A lack of proper sun shading especially in Texas with west-facing windows during sunset. I was in a place where the staff would come by and half-lower the shade during sunset, and finally me and another guy just got up and shut the blinds all the way. I've been in some places where they had no blinds and you suffer through sunset.
8) Ill-placed air conditioning vents or out-of-control air conditioning. This may not be the architect's fault but certainly falls in line with how to make a miserable dining experience if its so cold your nose is running.
9) Ridiculously obstructive or bright pendant lighting hanging in your face at a booth.
Let me know what other ones you can think of.

I haven't eaten there since I moved out of the neighborhood (4 years), but if you want to relive that seating experience, you could go to the Mamma's Pizza off of Camp Bowie. Last time I was there they still had the original Double Dave's booths with the DD carved into the side.

No thank you. They look worse than I remember, what would possess someone to put that much pitch in the seat? Maybe they figured it would cause people to eat less pizza from the buffet if their knees were pressed into their stomach.

And it looks like other people have noted this design flaw:

It didn't help they kept pushing back the opening of the place after changing names. The name was horrible.
The food was hit/miss. Wife and I loved the old version of the restaurant when it was by ridgmar mall. The version in Wild Acre/Boozies was heavy handed on the spice levels in every dish. I mean for example on the Ruben sandwich, the thousand island dressing was blazing spicey hot to the point of being difficult to eat. A lot of their other food was the same, way too spicy.
Finally, it will fail spectacularly at the new location off I-20. One it is hard to get to and secondly it is in a bad neighborhood. It will not last a year.

A new location of Enchiladas Ole will move into the spot previously occupied by Wild Acre and Boozie's. https://www.star-tel...e280747805.html
Wasnt that facility one that Johns firm had previously designed?

My firm has done most of the work inside that building. I was the architect for the Boozie's/Wild Acre space and basically produced the construction documents for the entire project myself. Next door, the Lazy Daisy space, I worked with our interior designer, and the two of us produced the construction documents. That building is still owned by our landlord in our building.
