Here's a view via my camera this time. The dark sky after the weather a couple days ago camouflages Frost.

I now have the latest construction photos of the building that I took on January 27, 2018.  I'm guessing these will be the last until the signage is installed, or the building is completed.  I'm scheduled to tour it on February 8th.

I toured the building with the AIA again tonight.  This was my fourth walk through since the building started construction.  Frost is scheduled to have their office workers start their first work day in the building on February 26th.  The bank lobby will open on March 1st.  Anthracite and Jetta are scheduled to move into the building in May.  I noticed on Channel 5 that the upper floors now have lights turned on.

The interior finish out of the building is nice, and I look forward to seeing it open.  Maybe we could have a forum meeting in the new restaurant that is planned on the amenity levels.

Also, Bennett Benner Partners confirmed what I had read into the DDRB approval.  The snowflake logo on the east and west sides at the top of the building was approved when the DDRB approved the design of the building.  This was before top of building signage was outlawed by the design guidelines and standards modifications.

That would be awesome!

It's been fun watching this go up. I've never been on the forum to watch the entire process of a new skyscraper get built, from land acquisition to rumors of the size to seeing renderings and watching the whole construction process.

Was anything mentioned about decorative lighting?

Nothing was mentioned about decorative lighting.  The only thing mentioned about lighting of any type was the Frost "snowflake" logo and how it was approved with the building at the DDRB, and that now top of building signage of any type above 120 feet is now outlawed by the Design Standards.  I probably should have asked, but it won't be long before the building will be illuminated.

Does that include scrolling signage ? If for example someone wanted to scroll Merry Christmas or show a waving American Flag above 120 feet is that not allowed either ?

I like the building overall, but from some angles it looks “squatty”

I will agree that it does look that way from some angles.  They only built what they thought the market could support.  There are still some vacant floors, so it appears they probably built about the right amount to fill up over the next few months to a year.

Really wrapping up quick. All glass is up and the patio areas even appear to have heaters out. The barricades on 5th street are beginning to come down. The sidewalks and lobby are clearly a few weeks from being done but we should get a good look at them now without the barricades. Big things left to look for are lighting and the Frost logo.

What we really don't know at this time is if the 26 floors count the parking.  Even at what you call a stacked condition, it would lower the height of the building as comparing it with 26 floors of office space only.  Parking levels do not require the floor to floor height that office space requires.  A parking garage can usually be built with a 10' floor to floor dimension.  An office space requires at least 12' from floor to floor, but that can vary due to the structure of the building (steel or concrete), spans of the structure, and desired ceiling height.  For reference, you could take all of our tallest buildings and divide the overall height by the actual number of floors present in the building.  By the way, if you do this and only count the floors that are leased, you will not have a correct floor to floor height.  Almost all of our downtown buildings have two levels up on top for elevator overrun, mechanical space, and fire stairs leading to the roof.  You will probably come up with a fraction of foot for the average floor to floor height of any of the buildings.  The reason for the fraction is that the floor to floor height could be 12'-4", or some of the floors are higher.  This is more typical.  For example, the Fort Worth National Bank building was built with 37 floors at a height of 454 feet.  If you divide that out, it makes the floors 12.27 feet each.  In reality, most of the floors were built at 12' from floor to floor with levels 34, 35, 36, and 37 being taller.  I figure the building will be between 300 and 350 feet in height, unless there is a crown or a spire on top.

JTR, you've toured the 640 Taylor/Frost now.  Here is something curious to me.  Many contemporary high rises now stack the commercial/residential uses of the structure atop garages.  Had 640 Taylor followed this trend, it would easily had top out over 130 meters.  Case at hand, Worth Residence Tower orTrinity Terrace.

Why the presumably bare the extra cost to excavate a 30 meter hole for a 26 story tower?

To get the absolute answer, you would have to ask the architects.  However, from my four tours of the building, I have learned part of the reason.  The developers are providing parking for their building, Morningstar Oil & Gas, and some spaces for the Fort Worth Club.  They also wanted secure parking for their companies, Anthracite, Jetta, and probably for their hospitality staff at the restaurant and meeting spaces.  I believe the parking in the basement levels are for the developers and their uses.  The parking above grade is for the public and remainder of the building tenants and the parking provided for their neighbors.  The program put forth by the developers necessitated separation of the parking.  The easiest way to do this was put one entrance/exit into the basement and another entrance/exit into the parking above grade.  The geotechnical report may also have had some determination in this, as well.  It may have indicated that it was relatively easy to dig down at this location, as compared to other locations in downtown.  As far as I know, this was the deepest excavation to date.  The Omni Hotel has three levels of parking below grade, this is four levels.

The first Frost "snowflake" logo was supposed to be installed on the west side of the building today.  It was called off due to high wind.  However, the frame for the sign was installed on top of the square metal portion of the facade.  Here's a view of the upper portion of the building.

Credit goes to Frost and its team responsible for creating their logo.  I am having a time trying to think of a more recognizable symbol amongst the financial industry.

If you look at all of my construction photographs, you can see how the appearance of the glass changes with the light and angle.  You can also see all of the different types of glass on the building.

Frost has been using this logo for as long as I can remember.

I took this photo on April 15, 2008, and I have now put this on Frost Tower's page for the northwestern view.  When the sky conditions and sun angles are right, I will get back there in the morning to take a photo of the Taylor Street side of the building to be used for the final photograph from that angle.  I plan to add a dusk or nighttime photo when the building is finally illuminated.

frost-nw.jpg

Eventually, this photo will go in the Architecture in Fort Worth archives due to construction activity that will happen on this site.  Then, I will be forced to use a true "street" photo, rather than one looking across a parking lot.

I had thought about going down at dusk to take some photos with just the logo illuminated, but since that is not the final lighting scheme, I have decided to wait until all of the lights are turned on.  That is supposed to happen on the grand opening night.

Austin and I have talked with the architect.  From what I understand the lighting will only be across the top of the building.  The building is still wired for edge lighting around all of the cantilevers as shown in the early renderings.  Everything but the top was not installed to save some money.

It will definitely lose some of the effect that the cantilever lighting would have given it, but I think it will look ok regardless.  The intended lighting was very subtle to begin with.

The building had ribbon cutting today. All the cones have been removed from 5th and Taylor Streets. Cones are still up on Lamar.

The lights might be on tonight.

The lights are on and some of the architects at Bennett Benner Partners got the building at dusk when the lighting was right.  I did make it down after dark and I took this photo.  Not all of the lights at the top of the building are working, but most are on.

I think the lighting is ok.. glad to know that some weren’t working because it was kinda underwhelming. The one thing that stood out to me last night was that the lights on this building are a big contrast to the lighting on the other buildings. They are more white and really make the lighting on the other buildings look dull.

I am hoping that soon the decision will be made to complete the original lighting scheme.  I think it will look better at that point.  Also, if I get a chance this weekend, I will try to drive around town to see how it looks from a distance.  I did catch glimpses of it as I was driving from my house to downtown last night.  I live slightly west of due south from downtown, and there are several vantage points of the skyline either by driving down 8th Avenue, or brief views in Ryan Place and Fairmount.

I am eager to see how Frost Tower will look on NBC 5 tonight ? My understanding they switch everyday backgrounds from downtown Fort Worth to Dallas. And last night it was Dallas. On a side note. You can clearly see PierOne building during broadcast. But has me wondering when "Worth" is built. If it may be too far north to be seen on the NBC camera angle ?

First of all, the camera rotates and zooms in and out; therefore, they should be able to show the Worth Residences.  Second, they have another camera on top of Villa de Leon.  That one should catch the Worth.  Finally, their main webcams at the Stayton in Fort Worth (the camera angle you have referred) and the one on top of Lake Cliff Tower in Dallas are available to view online.  Below is the link to the main camera page.

I had meant to take a blue hour photo of the skyline from the Carter porch but forgot about the Elan W7th cranes blocking a part of the view, so I got went to Trinity Park instead. The building does'nt stand out much from ground level over there. Here's a closer view of the lighting. The color temperature is much cooler than many existing buildings and obviously different from the Christmas lights. They came on at 8:17 and we're on when I last looked about 2AM.
