Does anyone remember the old Stone Hotel? I believe it was located on a cross street right before one got to the library (this was back in the late '50's/early '60's). It was just a "hole in the wall" with a small white wooden sign over the entrance. It often reminded me of an old time western era hotel even though the entrance in no way had any trappings or decorations which would identify it as such. The sign over the entrance just stated "Stone Hotel". If I remember correctly, it was a gray brick building and might have been located on 5th street, which I think was about a block south of the old FTW public library. As I recall the entrance to the library was at the apex of a triangle and faced roughly south.

The library was on 9th at Throckmorton, so anybody know what the Stone was?

I don't. From Bill's description it sounds as if it was on Throckmorton Street south of the Telephone Building. That would put it on 11th Street instead of 5th.

Yeah, from looking on the map (MapBlast), I'm reasonably sure 11th Street is where it was at. I had forgotten precisely where the old library was located. Anyway the Stone Hotel was on the north side of 11th Street. Unless there was another street between it and and 9th (10th maybe?), I believe that would be where the hotel was located. Maybe at that time 10th St. continued east all the way through the block bounded by 9th and 11th streets to Houston? If so, the Stone Hotel might have been on 10th in that case. Maybe an old city directory shows where the Stone Hotel was.

Yes 10th St. did go through between Houston and Throckmorton. When I was a kid my father used to go to Hunnicutts barber shop on 10th and play moon in a room in the back of the shop.
My 1949 city directory shows the Stone Hotel located at 210 1/2 W 10th Street furnished rooms, Janie Parham owner lived on the premise widow of Bryan C..
George S. Hunnicutt's Barber shop was at 212 W 10th.

That was probably the way it was back then. It looks like you solved that problem Tarzan 1946! Even though I was fairly young when I saw that old hotel, it made an impression on me of being an old time western-era hotel.

I grew up in FW back in the 50's and 60's. I remember riding the TCU bus to town and passing block after block of walk up hotels, especially along Main St. where the convention center is now. I don't remember the Stone Hotel, but I was wondering if anybody remembers the Jackson Hotel. A lot of young men lost their innocence in that hostelery back in the day. This is my first posting. I promise not to bring up such racy topics in the future.

The Jackson Hotel was located at 1014 Main Street.
