Rode my bike to my closest TEXRail station for the event today. At the event, I met with Ann Zadeh and Betsy Price.....Near the start of the ride, Mayor Price saw me.... I praised TEXRail and asked about streetcars.

She told me she doesn't expect Fort Worth to build a streetcar system. Downtown interests don't want it (people leaving downtown; overhead wires), and streetcars generally haven't been very successful in other cities.

Mayor Price unintentionally admitted that Downtown Interests killed the streetcar starter line and will continue to sabotage any attempts by the general public to have a say in the matter.

[Qualification - To be fair, Mayor Price's remarks were posted as indirect quotations, otherwise as they appear, the Mayor is confirming that the "Downtown Interest" is stopping as of now any hopes of a street car line].

Mayor Price is genuflecting openly.

By generally being unsuccessful she must be thinking about Kansas City..Oh wait..everything is up to date in Kansas City including street cars or the strange people who want it.  Don't forget to click on the videos.

And closer to home  - Did someone say "overhead wires".. what wires?

I thought it was rather interesting that one of our forum members, TXBornViking, tweeted about the streetcar and got this response from the Mayor,

Would love to make this happen. Already excited @TrinityMetro is extending @TEXRAIL1 to the medical district. More public transit innovation is needed and @CityofFortWorth is ready!

I understand that the new President/CEO of Trinity Metro is interested in streetcars, but not sure if the board cares.

Don't even get me started. Every time I go see relatives in North Oak Cliff (which is probably once a month) I have to see all the TOD around the line that Fort Worth funded.

I'd be interested to hear people's thoughts on this "trackless tram." Is it a glorified bus, or is it worthwhile for it's lower cost and high adaptability?

It seems like with proper station design it could really give it the feel of rail and thus have more of a draw than bus lines. Also the lady towards the end of the video talks about the need for dedicated right-of-way for the tram, which would certainly give it more gravitas than just a 'bus lane,' that happens to have a tram in it.

Those are a very cool alternative.  They could even serve as a beta design to see how transit fits into the landscape before building something permanent.

I could write a lot about my thoughts for the "trackless tram" but this video can be pretty good. While I don't agree with everything Reece has to say he IS very informed on transit issues as well as the many mode types that are available.

They system that Houston built is pretty cool.  I keep meaning to ride it from downtown to the Galleria, but have yet to do it. It is my understanding that although Houston has a light rail system, this route was done as a cheaper alternative to a light rail expansion.

Are you talking about the Silver Line? It seems like a cool concept, sort of a hybrid of rail and BRT. I did not ride it, but I did see it blow past me on Post Oak when I was in Hou recently.

Something interesting I noticed when reviewing the Trinity Metro Board agenda, which took place today. The meeting minutes from last week include this blurb,

Mr. Andreski also mentioned the Chairman and team’s discussion with DFWI about the role a streetcar can play in the economic development, tourism and community engagement in Fort Worth. After discussion, the DFWI’s board approved a $10,000 commitment and provided a letter of support for the upcoming study

I went to find the video of the January 17 meeting, but the recording ends right as the topic comes up. You can watch here:

So this seems like a new development. I have not heard of an upcoming study. Is that something Trinity Metro is undertaking and what exactly is the study trying to determine?

It reads like DFWI is working on a study and TM is contributing $10k toward it.

Yet another transit study... I've lost count of how many transit studies we've had.

Let's see... Tarrant County... Transit Moves Fort Worth... The T Master Plan... the previous streetcar study in 2008 or 2010... and I feel like I'm missing one.

In our public library I've found a 1979 Fort Worth Trolley Feasibility Study and 1998 A Fixed-Rail Trolley Line Feasibility Study as well

It looks like HDR Engineering has recently been awarded a planning contract with Trinity Metro but not sure if the streetcar study is included in that.

I actually have SOME faith in it, this time, mainly because of the age and the fact that we even have a commuter rail, now.

But... as always... we'll see.

The thing that I heard is that the Bass interests are on board this time. And if you remember who killed it the last time.....

New year, new study, new thread?

There's a lot of infrastructure dollars floating around right now.

Why is not always answered when you hear scuttlebutt.

I believe the reason they turned against the last attempt was that they thought the proposed route would take people away from downtown and promote southside establishments over Sundance Square. I don't have confirmation on that either. Just things you hear.

One thing I take from the comments made by Andy and Carlos is that it seems like all the interest is between Downtown, Panther Island and the Stockyards.

Well given the state of Sundance Square (and the constant complaints against a certain Bass Family member, these days) and now having other entities invest money into other parts of downtown like A&M with the east side, I could maybe see them changing their tune if that was the true reason behind it.

Going back to the Southside Streetcar idea I made some time ago:

rlP2dc3.jpg

I took a small walk around Rosedale between 12th and Jerome just for personal vision, being that I wanted to see how a connecting Medical District Station for the existing TexRail and Streetcar would look like.
