That's certainly something to consider as a concern.  I'm still not really digging the design concept in general though.

The one example to your point that comes to mind would be the Kansas City Convention Center where an interstate runs underneath it.  I've been in the main hall before with 20,000 people and its something that even caught my attention 15-20 years in a post-9/11 world when that was really fresh on everyone's minds.  It doesn't seem like a problem that is easy to fix or address, so maybe the solution right now is to ignore it as a risk and hope for the best?

I went to the Convention Center District Expansion Meeting tonight and I saw Rriojas71 at the meeting.  The topics covered were Phase 1 of the Convention Center Expansion, the Texas A&M Downtown Campus, and the Omni Hotel Expansion.  I don't know if I learned anything really new, except that the Omni Hotel expansion will probably only be 11 or 12 stories.  It will still have approximately the same number of rooms, but it will be heavy on the number of suites.  This meeting was held at the Convention Center and it was at 5:30 PM.  They will have the presentation online at some point in the future.

It was good seeing you John.

I was hoping for a bit more but most of it was already stuff we have covered on here.  Like John said, the 2nd tower is going to be scaled down in height.  I believe the condominium owners were in attendance and there was a small cheer at that announcement.

Looks like we got stitched up again.

The cover of today's Sunday Star-Telegram is a long report about the Convention Center,
Should Fort Worth spend $700M to overhaul the aging Convention Center downtown?

Was a nice long article. I sort of thought we were already past the **Should** stage of this project though.

The part that caught my attention mentioned, the new convention center could host up to 300 events per year, and that would account a 94% increase in current availability. Sorry, but that is not very flattering of our current convention demand if this change would result in that huge of an increase. I would hope we can attract more events than cheerleading tournaments and The SW Believers Convention.

I guess they're trying to figure out how to pay for the Convention Center:

I’m sure they are kicking themselves for not doing this 20 years ago when they knew they needed to expand it to get more conventions…. And that was when conventions were much more of a thing then they are now.

At the very least, the work on the convention center should have been tied to the construction of Dickeys and all paid for at the same time.  Imagine the money they would have saved.  It was all tied together in the first place.  A new arena made it possible to lose the one downtown so they could move forward with a renovation to modernize the convention center.

Rriojas71, 21 and 22 years ago was when the last phases of the Convention Center opened.  That phased project demolished the John F. Kennedy Theater and built the new ballroom, expanded the exhibits hall, and built the meeting rooms along Houston Street.  I don't think the city had enough money to do the whole project at once, and I think that would have required closing down the entire center for the construction.  Of course, it could have been phased, (which the first parts were) but the time frame for construction would have been extended greatly.

Well that's what happens when you have a City Hall filled with older folks who are mostly stuck in the past and don't look past 5 feet in front of their faces for several decades.

That may not be a totally fair to say, but it sure as hell feels like it... I mean, being next to Dallas isn't the sole reason why this city has missed out and is behind its peers.

In this article phase 3 was planned in 2016 but then halted.  Probably not the fault of the city but I still think they have known for a while that the update needed to happen.  I don't think the demand is there now especially for the escalating costs.  I guess we are just rolling the dice now.
