I have a question that may seem fairly insignificant, but the answer to it is quite important to me as it has some influence on a piece that I am currently writing. The question is this: Did the Roadrunner Lounge (which I believe was actually simply named Roadrunner) exist in 1980, and if so, was it still on the top floor of the Rodeway Inn (now a Holiday Inn Express)? At the age of 16, I had a weekend job working at a Stop 'n' Go convenience store in Benbrook. As I lived in Hurst at the time, I had to drive through Ft. Worth to get there. I have a distinct memory of traveling over the elevated I-30 through the south end of downtown on my way to work and as the highway made a bend to the left immediately upon passing the T&P Warehouse, I could see the Rodeway Inn on my right. Though the elevated was directly over Lancaster, it departed from that path at that point so that the building which was (and still is) on the south side of Lancaster was to my immediate right as I passed it. As I passed, I remember seeing a sign at or near the top floor of this six story building that read, "Roadrunner." I wondered if that had been the lounge I had heard my aunt speak of a few years earlier when I had been a little boy. She had spoken highly of the place and there had even been some mention of a couple of the Dallas Cowboys having been spotted there one night. Ironically, I was on my way to work with that very aunt in Benbrook, but I never asked her about it. Sadly, I cannot do so now as she passed away in 1987. I've asked friends and other family members, but none of them seem to have a clue. A 1973 issue of Texas Monthly confirms that it was indeed on the top floor of that building in 1973, but issues from 1979 and 1980 indicate that a place named Galaxy was at the Rodeway Inn at 1111 W. Lancaster. Is it possible that there were two "night spots" in the building at that time or that the sign for Roadrunner had simply not been removed, or am I just confusing memories? Perhaps I had seen it some years earlier and only remembered it as I passed. If anyone has any recollection of this or any information concerning the Roadrunner, I would greatly appreciate a reply. It could clarify a great deal and contribute significantly to a (perhaps not so significant) piece of literature which is currently a work in progress. Thank you for having taken the time to read this.
