The bats in the kress bld. were trapped for many days before anyone was called and was as a game warden calls these incidents "illegal entrapment" if they would had done a proper bat exclusion by a company knowledgeable in bats it would have cost upwards of $15,000 or more, the contracter may have been trying to save a bit of $ but as the bats that were sealed in and trapped sought escape they spread throughout the building the buildings owner (Nick Rose) lawyers called Bat World Trinity River to get about 20 bats as the caller stated, in the end that number was over 3,000+ and depeleted the organizations funds intended to get through the orphan bat season as well as the yearly injured bats recieved which is around 100 to 125 bats in normal years for each rescue center, an offer to "assist in any manner, personally or the Firm generally" was made, they were sent an itemized list of expences incurred-meds,fluids,transport,needles,syringes,gas,etc.(around $ 2,500) and a request was made for a possible donation from the contracter (Dennet Const.) or the building owner to cover at least a
portion of this, which the org. was told was to be forthcoming, after several weeks passed an inquirey was made, the responce was " I never spoke with Mr. Peplinski" by one, "go to hell" from someone at the comedy club and " maybe I'll
file criminal Trespass charges on you people" from the owner the star telegram was contacted, they were told that the rescue people were great, they were concerned, and as is in print a donation will be coming-well it never did come, probally never will, as having non-profit status this could have been Tax deductable-I guess the goverment will get that "donation" some times doing the right thing is just to hard for some to do, we receive no federal or state funding as some supposed, this one colony would have continued to eat 25lbs all summer, it was a batchler colony, no females in all of them they are elsewhere downtown along with many other species of bats luckily there homes have not been closed...yet, as 50% of the old roost sites have been by the other building owners downtown over the past year and a half,-feel free to let those involved know how you feel about this, Austin see's or dosen't see I should say 20,000lbs of insects each night, those bats were given an alternative roost to inhabit and pay the city $8,000,000 in revenue added to the local economy, some folks don't appreciate whats important it seems or are very misinformed, the rescue site at bat world (batworld.org) has been updated and has a nice letter from those who's forthcoming assistance never came.
What would be benifical to all -Bats,Business's,the city and citizens would be an alternative roosting sites included in the trinity river vision- a 3/4"wide x 10"deep creavise included in bridge design is not much to ask for from our city leaders, let them know we need these highly benifical and very misunderstood mammals before its to late, they are among the slowest reproducing animals there size and this incident will take many years to replace those that were killed in a matter of days.
I wonder How many insects make up a pound ?
