Posy #49 was a bit prophetic.. Moore has continued to be hit and was earlier this week.

Today is the 17th Anniversary of the tornado in downtown.  I was at an AIA Meeting inside the former Leddy's Ranch Space at the Sanger Lofts when it hit.  The AIA is meeting again on Thursday.  I hope there won't be any bad storms.

I think there will be some small tornadoes out east today, but shouldn't be anything to bad by the time it arrives here.

I remember two things that were completely surreal from the day after the tornado. Driving in on 121 to 35 to 30 to get to the west side that morning and seeing how the damage was spread across downtown was unbelievable.  It was nearly dark when pictures started rolling in the night before and many of the images that I saw early that morning were of the more severe locations: Bank One, Cash America, Calvary Cathedral.  It was clear that morning that a large portion of downtown was hit pretty hard.  Later that day, some of my coworkers and I headed out to check on a warehouse that we were renting for storage on the east side of downtown near the Purina plant.  Driving down Forest Park and Henderson was like driving through a war zone.  The river levies and grass areas along the streets were littered with all sorts of debris.  All of the trees that were left standing were stripped of their leaves.  Our warehouse had minimal damage.  Large parts of the gravel and tar roof were peeled off and we had far worse water damage from the torrential rains that fell the next weekend.  It's hard to believe it was 17 years ago and it was a miracle that more people weren't killed.  If it had happened an hour earlier, the human toll might have been far greater.

If it had happened a half hour earlier, it would have gotten me!

Yep.

My power went off for a few minutes at about 2 am.  I got up and checked the weather, saw the solid line of T-storms was just about upon us, saw no warnings and went back to bed.  A few minutes after that, the tornado siren went off and there was a tornado warning on my phone for Benbrook which is just a few miles away.  I got up again, checked the weather on the computer but also turned on the TV.  By then the rotating Doppler image was already in the TCU area.  I watched TV a little longer until I was satisfied the tornado (or whatever it was) was not moving toward me, and went to bed.  Ho hum.

Another year has rolled by and we are at the 18th anniversary of the March 28, 2000 Tornado that tore through the West Side, Downtown Fort Worth, and beyond.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram interviewed me regarding the tornado and my name, this website, and a quote were in the article in today's paper.

I can remember it like it was last week.

Among the few interesting things to come out of is "Tornado, the Public Art" at "Hell's Intersection/Cultural District"

It's hard to believe that it has been that long.  Since the country has been in a crisis over the last couple of weeks, if you had not pointed it out, I probably would have forgotten about it.

Interesting that, on the 20th anniversary of the tornado here, there was a similarly destructive tornado in Jonesboro, Arkansas.  Like the tornado in Fort Worth, a Jonesboro television station was live on the air with spectacular video of the tornado forming across town.

Today is the 21st Anniversary of the tornado.  I remember it like it was yesterday.

One of the interesting things I never put together until recently was when I had a friend in town from SF who was visiting me was from a question he asked me.  We went to the Kimball and the Amon and afterwards we went to eat at Righteous Foods and walked around W7th.  He really like FW and wondered why the area was full of new construction and there wasn't really a sense of history there.  I didn't know how to reply other than it was an industrial area that was now going through a rejuvenation and some gentrification.

I grew up in FW but I had was living in SF during the tornado.  It dawned on me that they reason so many of the buildings were new was because of the destruction caused by the tornado.  I know some buildings were spared from the damage but I guess I'm not sure how much damage may have occurred in that area from the tornado.  Of course W7th may not be what it currently is without that tragic event.

Also, would the flood of 1949 also have had some impact too?

A couple weeks ago, the NWS issued a Tornado Warning for Tarrant County. Rick Mitchell said it was confirmed.

The radar showed a clearly defined hook echo just west of downtown pushing east into it. Thankfully, it wasn't still a tornado when it passed over downtown!

I have a large 14' window (old overhead door opening) right next to my desk and it looked like it was clearing and then we heard the sirens again.  I looked out and saw the skies were very threatening.  We went outside and looked northeast along Camp Bowie toward town, and it looked like we could see the funnel cloud.  We were very surprised.

It's been addressed several times in this thread over the years, but it is pretty amazing how much the city changed as a direct or indirect result of the tornado: Museum Place, Linwood, Montgomery Plaza, the Forest Park-Summit-5th block, The Tower.  Just a few areas that might look different if not for the tornado.

I kind of like this graphic:  https://hoodline.com...24-years-later/

Imagine had it taken the route towards Burnett Plaza, Current City Hall and AT&T Central Switching.  Not really anyone's favorite architecture, those three buildings are built like tanks.
