This designation sounds a little like that afforded "Route 66" although that route is still there. Another component of the "National Trail System" is the Trail of Tears. The Chisholm trail had a major branch that passed through Fort Worth, and the (Great) Western passed further west. To me this plan would have more significance if there was a long-term plan to work with local jurisdictions to actually have a TRAIL along these routes that could be used by hikers, bicyclists, horseback riders, etc. Such a trail would not have to be built all at once, but in segments like the trail between Mineral Wells and Weatherford that uses abandoned railroad right of way. The Fort Worth Stockyards would be an obvious node on such a system...
