#151080 Fort Worth and the Film Industry

Posted by John T Roberts on 04 March 2024 - 10:19 PM in City Issues

The Fort Worth Report has an article about how Tarrant County College is training the future film workforce.  With all of the filming being done here in the city and throughout North Texas, this is great news.  Below is the link written by Seth Bodine and Olla Mokhtar.

#150275 Interior Photos of the Tarrant County Courthouse

Posted by John T Roberts on 15 January 2024 - 10:30 PM in Historic Buildings and Preservation

I'm glad that I could spread the word and post the photographs.  We have a beautiful Courthouse.  Supposedly, it has the only oval rotunda in any courthouse in Texas.

#150272 Interior Photos of the Tarrant County Courthouse

Posted by John T Roberts on 15 January 2024 - 06:23 PM in Historic Buildings and Preservation

After the Fort Worth Stock Show All Western Parade on Saturday, the Tarrant County Historical Commission held a tour of the Tarrant County Courthouse.  I have been on these tours before and I have posted a few photographs.  However, I decided to put a thread on the restored interior on the forum.  The Commission will host another tour during the Main Street Arts Festival, probably on April 20th.  The leader of my tour was Architect Art Weinman.  If the name sounds familiar, he is a third generation architect.  His grandfather was Ludwig Bernhardt Weinman, who designed several buildings still standing here in the city.

#149590 Sinkholes

Posted by John T Roberts on 06 December 2023 - 10:43 PM in Miscellaneous

Even though I have been practicing architecture since 1987, I have never dealt with a sinkhole.

#149896 Hurley Building

Posted by John T Roberts on 20 December 2023 - 07:46 PM in Local History

The Hurley Building is featured on the plaques along the facades of the Kimpton Harper Hotel.  It is a part of the history of the site.

Trivia: The intersection of 7th & Main has held the highest number of Fort Worth's Former Tallest Buildings.  Three of them have been located there.  The northwest corner has held two of those three: The Hurley Building and the Kimpton Harper Hotel.  It's the only site in the city that has held two of the tallest.

Austin, thanks for posting the link.  It will be interesting to see how much traffic that will generate.

#150083 Brown/Tadloch House damaged by fire.

Posted by John T Roberts on 03 January 2024 - 01:14 PM in Historic Buildings and Preservation

The historic information provided was from the Tarrant County Historic Resources Survey, which was published by the Historic Preservation Council of Tarrant County.  When they dissolved, the organization donated their possessions to Historic Fort Worth, Inc.  In our Preservation Resource Center, we have all of the files, photographs, and history of all of the structures listed within the books.  We also have files on structures that were either too young, or didn't qualify to be listed at the time.

#150426 820 & Marine Creek Parkway (420,800 SQFT Mixed-Use Project)

Posted by John T Roberts on 24 January 2024 - 02:10 PM in Commercial

I don't know the details of this case, so answering your question may be a little difficult.  Zoning is done by individual parcel.  If those retail pads are zoned for Commercial, and the industrial areas are zoned Industrial, then if a developer decided to demolish one of the industrial buildings and then build retail it its place, they would have to ask for a zoning change.

#147745 Texas Monthly Top BBQ list

Posted by John T Roberts on 19 August 2023 - 02:47 PM in Arts and Entertainment

Kalleen and I finally made it to Goldee's today.  She thought the crowds would have thinned out, but it was pretty busy.  We arrived at 12:30, stood in line outside for one hour, and then, when we got to the door, they started running out of everything.  They usually have enough chopped brisket left to usually feed the remaining people in line.  That's all of the meat they had left, so we each ordered a half pound.  We both wanted potato salad, but they ran out of that, and only baked beans and cheese grits were left.  I ordered the beans and that was enough.  She ordered both remaining sides.  I sampled the cheese grits and they were definitely good, but I'm not a big grits fan.  It was a fun lunch and certainly different.  Now, I can say I have tried their barbecue.

#147747 Texas Monthly Top BBQ list

Posted by John T Roberts on 19 August 2023 - 04:14 PM in Arts and Entertainment

She had wanted to try it for quite some time, but I don't like to stand in line for anything.  However, we finally decided to make this an adventure.  If they ran out of food before we got inside, then we could say we tried, stood in 106 degree heat (in the shade with a breeze and misters) for an hour, visited with some friendly people in the line, and then we would go to Jambo's on 1187.

#148217 Average Cost of Construction

I read the article when it came out.  You are correct that the Petroleum Building would make a good candidate.

#148296 Did You Know That Chevrolets Were Once Built in Fort Worth?

Posted by John T Roberts on 25 September 2023 - 03:00 PM in Local History

Most of you will not be able to read this because it is behind the Fort Worth Star-Telegram's paywall.  If you can, Carol Roark has an interesting article about the former Chevrolet Plant located on West Seventh Street.  The Flood of 1922 and low production from the plant led to its demise.  After it was closed, Montgomery Ward used it as a temporary store and warehouse while the current building was being built.  The building also housed Radio Shack for a time.  It was eventually demolished in 1986.

Those were a lot of changes, but I trust Carol Roark's research.  She has written several books on Fort Worth History and she is a noted historian.

JBB, you are correct on the location.  I remember the old building and plant and I could have added in that the 7th Street Station apartments were built on the site.

#146104 Glen Rose Sycamore Grove petrified wood structure in danger

Posted by John T Roberts on 22 May 2023 - 09:45 PM in Historic Buildings and Preservation

When riding bicycles on country roads around Glen Rose, I have been by the building many times.  I told my friend Kalleen about the possible loss of the ruins.  She works often in Glen Rose, and she was aware of the highway bypass project.  She told me that she was going to try to make the meeting.

The day was very nice and your photographs showed it.  I have been impressed with some of the fall color in my own yard, but the winds are quickly blowing the leaves off of my trees.
