I hope it works because if it fails because of its location, the narrative will be that the Fort can't support (or execute on) this type of institution and it might be a long time before it gets another shot.

While I agree that it won't do anything to directly benefit downtown, as a school of choice, they couldn't have picked a more central location.
With the current school of choice program, if a student is selected to attend a particular school, they start the morning by going to what would be their normal high school, and the district then buses them to the school they actually attend. By putting these schools at IM Terrell it will minimize the amount of travel time for all students.
The other thing to keep in mind is that since this is strictly a school of choice, it was never intended that they would be drawing students strictly from the surrounding neighborhoods. Most of the students would be bused in anyway.

First I've read in all the prior discussions here about plans to bus transport the kids to and from the planned academy at theTerrell location. I wish the most recent Star-Telegram article by Nishimura (cited previously) had had details about transportation. If they're going to be bused, does it really matter where the academy is located?
Regarding opinions whether or not I.M Terrell is located downtown, the TIF board decided that it is (see quoted excerpt from the S-T article below).
The figures don’t account for a contribution from Fort Worth’s Downtown tax increment finance district, which raises money for infrastructure improvements based on growth in the property tax base. The TIF board last year put $1 million into its project and finance plan to support a public downtown STEM academy.

This might need a new thread, but I'm not sure. Last night the plans for the FWISD STEM and Visual Arts Academy were introduced.
Video here
I was a skeptic, but this rendering/plan is pretty darn awesome.

Wow that looks excellent, whoever put together the rendering at the end did an excellent job.

Something tells me that Butler Housing, when it is "improved", will become part of this in the long term.

Whoa! Check this out. Noticed it on VLK architects when looking for pics of the Summit project.
The master plan was developed to consider the possibility of the re-use of underused property around a historic school district stadium. The street is designed to be a pedestrian friendly, urban street environment with trees, wide sidewalks and urban amenities. A portion of the property will be the possible site of a performing arts center for the local school district, as well as a new multipurpose center to replace an older, antiquated facility. The development plan includes two office buildings with structured parking. Restaurants and street level retail spaces surround the office buildings. A “boutique” hotel located at the corner provides a much needed lodging option.
I'm still terribly attached to this idea. Hopefully this will find a way to development after the city straightens out Trail Dr to Lancaster and Currie St.

First, let me state that searching for this topic was made unnecessarily difficult due to it having been started in the "Ideals and Suggestions for Projects" thread instead of the "Public & Institutional"
Now, the positive news. Ground was broken March 4, 2016 getting this project underway. It will be an outstanding facility and helps along with the improvements taking place, such as what are going on at Texas Wesleyan and Riverside, in the east sector of the City.

I thought FWISD chose the I.M. Terrel location instead of this location.

RR - maybe it makes sense to stat a new thread in "Public & Institutional" that references the new school. Personally I was pretty attached to the idea of having the new school at FF; but that wasn't what the ISD decided to do, so in the interests of not spreading confusion, I think a new thread with an accurate title would be in order. This thread belongs to the dustbin of "good ideas that unfortunately didn't pan out".

That new artwork seems to propose getting completely rid of Farrington. Am I seeing that right?

No. You can see the light standards of the field in front of the building in the first rendering.

Architectally it seems like the University side of the stadium is the only part worth keeping. So I am ok with this redesign. But it is still a bit concerning that the powers that be may just decide to tear it all down.

The whole stadium is worth keeping. Granted, the east side is not as ornamented as the west, but it is still the only Art Deco stadium in the city. It is a one of a kind structure. For the record, it has no local historic designation.

I just figured out that this is just a futuristic concept for the Farrington complex. I now know this will never happen because in the rendering there are actually several buildings in the background that all of us know will never will exists. (At least not any any of our lifetimes... lol) Especially the 2 large towers on the upper right side of the drawing. From the location in the rendering it looks as though that is from the JPS area. Here's another not-gonna-happen concept for the academy at Farrington.
It would be nice to FWISD use this site in the future.

I get a good look at this project most days going to and coming from work. I don't remember if we've seen a rendering, but it looks like it could be a really great looking project as you approach from the west on 30. The height is very imposing.

I am interested in the idea that FWISD could create campuses (10-12 grades) that are curriculum tailored to areas of study that prepares students for non-collegiate careers as is done in Germany; and a campus that would prepare students for going on to college if that is there desire.
I agree with you, rename. This is a great idea, and FWISD is already implementing it. The Gold Seal Schools Programs of Choice allow students to go to specific campuses to focus on studies for specific careers, similar to a college major. Many of the subjects are for vocational careers that don't require four-year college, such as automotive, culinary and firefighting.
(I thought this thread would be the best place to continue this discussion since the I.M. Terrell Academy for STEM and VPA is one of the Gold Seal Schools.)

Agree with the direction that FWISD is implementing. With the extremely high costs and the enormous debt in pursuit of a college degree, the cost & benefits are becoming an issue. A childhood friend of mine is now a Master Plumber who is making a very nice income and living quite comfortably.
Also agree that this is the best place to continue this discussion.
