So DFW would appear to be a city with designs on the 21st century. ...but this isn't news to anyone that reads this forum.

I recommend Kasarda's book, Aerotropolis. It's fascinating, and his writing is pretty accessible for those of us who aren't in the business.

I have not read Dr. Karsarda’s work but his theory suggests that major airports may evolve into cities. This is a fanciful but unworkable notion. Even as they grow in scale and function, airports will never perform the basic vital services that cities provide. These services involve public health, safety, welfare, and education. And people choose to live in cities for quality of life reasons. Can’t imagine anyone in their right mind wanting to live close to where noisy planes take off and land.
