The name is not the only thing about Terminis latest venture that makes it stand out; Termini plans to build the restaurant using eight to 10 metal shipping containers that can easily be attached to each other.

Okay, risque name aside, what do you think about building a restaurant out of shipping containers like this proposed hotdog restaurant in Buffalo?

I could picture something like this in W7th or perhaps somewhere along Main Street in the Near Southside.  I think a "green" building made of recycled shipping containers would play well on the Southside.

I would love to see a non-masonry facade in this city.

I want to gush a bit more about my home city of Buffalo but decided not to start a new thread.  I came across this article:  25 new Buffalo experiences for expats & visitors.  One thing that jumped out was the restoration of Shea's North Park Theater since we've talked about Ft Worth theater renovation in the past.

16) North Park is back: Uncertainty loomed when North Park closed in June 2013, but property owner Thomas J. Eoannou and Left Bank owner Michael G. Christiano combined efforts to renovate and reopen the longstanding theater in March.

I think the shipping container facade would fit better in Deep Ellum, cool idea but more of something you'd expect to see in outlying areas.

Just my personal opinion but I'd also think something like that would be a really hard sell anywhere in Sundance, but that theater would fit rather nicely. ;)

The Wendy's on West 7th needs to be razed so something like this can go in.

This is kind of exciting to me - my whole life has been spent watching my hometown in decline.  For the first time in decades, Buffalo is getting better.

I think that'd be do-able in the post-industrial section of the Near Southside (say between Vickery and Rosedale).

That is precisely where I am thinking.  There are so many vacant lots in that stretch that the whole area's sort of a blank canvas.

More Buffalo stuff:

Background - this past year, the original owner (owner since 1960) of the Buffalo Bills died.  Ralph Wilson was a Detroit resident but was very loyal to Buffalo when it came to the Bills.  With the sale of the team to Terry Pegula, fracking mogul and also owner of the Buffalo Sabres, plans are underway to build a new, state of the art stadium for the BIlls.  With that, here is a report on

BUFFALO NFL STADIUM SITE OPTIONS ANALYSIS.

There are basically 4 sites that were shortlisted:  One is in suburban Orchard Park where they would basically do what the Texas Rangers did:  build the new stadium next to the old one.  The other three options are in or near downtown Buffalo - near the Buffalo Sabres area (First Niagara Center), the minor league Buffalo Bisons Coca Cola Field, or a bit south of downtown in a brownfield location along the Buffalo River.  My money is on one of the downtown sites; that area is white hot when it comes to development and a new stadium would be another symbol of Buffalo's rebirth.

I posted this to FortWorthArchitecture because there has been a fair amount of discussion about arenas and stadiums in the DFW area; I thought seeing what another city is doing might be of interest.

Cool.

I just tripped across this article showing the changes in Google Streetview for several areas in Buffalo. It really has come up in the last few years. Buffalo Transforms Through Google Steet View.  I kind of expect something similar in a few years on Fort Worth's Near Southside/South Main Village area.

The Buffalo Central Terminal is in a similar state as the T&P Warehouse in Fort Worth.  But it is owned by the non-profit preservation group Central Terminal Restoration Corporation, and this year they named a developer to turn it into the center of a mixed use development which will be surrounded by housing, the proceeds from which will fund terminal restoration.

1-10-640x404.jpg

The article I linked was published in July, but more recently there's been talk of bringing Amtrak service back to the terminal.

I wonder if a similar approach would help revitalize the Fort Worth Public Market building- restore what's there, build complementary housing to pay for the renovations?

Love this building... although I do not like the window AC units hanging out from some of the windows. They really take away from the beauty of the architecture when looking at the building up close.

You are correct, JBB.  I came from Buffalo originally, but now I'm here.  Just like Bell Helicopter.  Just like Consolidated Aircraft (precursor to GD which moved to Ft Worth before selling the operation off to Lockheed).

I like to highlight stuff in Buffalo which has a rich architectural history and is currently going through a resurgence.  Some of the stuff that's happening there compares/contrasts with what's going on in Fort Worth.  There are some similarities between the cities; both have an inferiority complex (Ft Worth relative to Dallas, Buffalo relative to NYC).  Both can boast a fair amount of historical accomplishment.  Buffalo used to be one of the top 10 cities in the U.S.; Fort Worth is approaching that threshold.

A couple interesting articles in the Buffalo News this weekend if you like historical buildings:

Some views of the Buffalo Central Terminal mentioned up-thread that show the decay of the building.  I imagine Fort Worth's T&P Warehouse exhibits similar decay.

A photo series showing a mid-19th century cooperage (barrel making plant).  This company had over 100 patents in barrel making; the company shut down in 2002.

This is a Buffalo promotional video.  Buffalo has some stuff that is unique, but there are other things (brew pubs, festivals, etc.) that others cities including Fort Worth have.  It would be interesting to see a similar video made about Ft Worth.

I thought the company's website and mission was indicative of what is happening in Buffalo and which does not get the hoopla 'cause of Down State NY.

MSNBC aired an interview with the company's founding family.  I found their faith in Buffalo to be quite refreshing.

So if you want to spend a weekend in Buffalo, this is what the NY Times says you should do:  https://mobile.nytim...buffalo-ny.html

And by the way, if you drag the map in the article to see further east, drag it until you can I-90 running north and south... in the neighborhood just east of I-90 between Genesee Street and George Urban Blvd. is the neighborhood where I grew up.
