I traveled to Houston over the Thanksgiving weekend. We stayed in the arts district and saw some pretty cool stuff. You can click on any picture below to see a larger version:

We ate at the El Real Tex Mex restaurant, which was housed in an old theater building. They had a pretty sweet marquee.

The Menil Collection building was Renzo Piano's first building in the US.

The Chapel of St. Basil on the University of St. Thomas was one of Phillip Johnson's last designs.

And, here is the Broken Obelisk by Barnett Newman at the Rothko Chapel.

El Real Tex Mex looks ten kinds of cool. What a great reuse of a movie theater. Houston has a good track record of finding new ways to use single screen theaters. The old Alabama Theater was a bookstore for many years and now houses the first Trader Joe's in the Houston area.

Maybe some developers here in Fort Worth could learn from these examples. We should try new and different ways to preserve our historic buildings.

I would definitely eat at El Isis Mexican Restaurant if they wanted to renovate it.

JBB, it really is a cool place. It's in a hip part of town - Westheimer and Montrose - the food is good, and they actually had a huge screen up showing a western movie while we ate.

Your photos of El Real Tex Mex almost make me want to drive down to Houston just to eat those bacon enchiladas. Great shots, as always.
