The high winds yesterday toppled the Sundance Square Christmas tree. It landed on some cars! blink.gif

I found it rather amusing as well, although it must not have been fun for those people to have to put it up again. Probably not fun for the silver Lexus either...

Oh, yeah, those high straightline winds were a gasser. I was laughing the whole time I was picking up glass from a shattered window in my storage barn. I'm sure the folks with the water department in Rhome are laughing too about their collapsed water storage tank. And hey, don't forget about all those folks whose homes burned to the ground yesterday when the high winds combined with dry conditions and some sparks to make for some hilarious grass fires.

The photo of the tree on the Star Telegram website reminds me of the tree on the Grinch that stole Christmas when he threw it up on top of his sleigh, alll curved to one side.

The top of the tree actually broke, and now has a splint on it. It's also leaning a bit to the west, even with the support cables. I was hoping for a new tree; this year's version is pretty scrawny.

Before it blew over it looked like someone took a huge bite out of the lower north side. Makes for a good Charlie Brown Christmas now. happy.gif

Me and a friend were downtown when it happened. We didn't see the tree come down, but we saw it within minutes of if falling. The Lexus was still all smashed and under the tree. I felt bad for the people who owned the car. They were an older couple who had gone to the symphony at the Bass. The city is really lucky that no one was walking down the sidewalk between the tree and the parking lot when it fell. It would have definitely killed anyone it might have landed on. The Christmas Tree also destroyed one or two of the trees that were lining the street. You could see the trunk of one of the (oak??) trees sticking up through the christmas tree. It was completely broken in half and it reminded me of the trees in my neighborhood when the twister hit in 2000 - just snapped in half at the top of the tree.

I haven't seen the Christmas Tree since then. Did they just glue it back together and put it back up or what? How does it look after the "disaster"?

The project manager who was in charge of the tree this year was there when I was - she was on a cell phone and in tears. I felt bad for her, but like I said, it could have been worse... it could have killed somoene.

OH, Santa was there too... in his street clothes. I guess he was just getting ready to take his place on the stage in front of the tree for the kiddy's. Santa looked really upset too. It was actually really surreal. Everyone was standing around the tree kind of in shock. Some were really upset, some were laughing. I was talking to a lady who had gone to the symphony with the couple who's Lexus was TKO'd... She said they were standing in the parking lot saying their goodbyes when the tree came down... If those people had been in their car, they would have been hurt. What I want to know, is how do you explain that to your insurance company...

"Okay 'mam, tell me again how your brand new Lexus got crushed like a beer can -- wait a dog-gone minute, are you really trying to tell me that a giant Christmas Tree with big red balls and giant candy canes crushed your $60,000 car?"

I think the lay down rest did it some good, looks pretty good right now. It is the same tree, isn't it? All things considered, I’d have to say their efforts have been admirable. Tallest tree my family ever had was 14’, can't imagine how you'd anchor a 65 footer to withstand 40 mph gusts. Did they call the folks at Rockefeller Center?

I think it adds a really nice touch to Sundance, now all they need to do is make that parking lot in front of Barns & Noble an ice skating rink. Now there’s an idea! I saw a train station in Zurich where they blocked off a 40 meter wide end, opened the doors on each corner, iced 40 meters inside and about 40 meters outside. Children would ice skate in one door into the station then out the other door to outside, then back in.

"OH NO! GODZIRRHAA!"

I wonder if that is how it went. Good to see some people finding a little humor in this. LEXUS, of all the things it could have fallen onto. Made some news down here BTW. Saw some TCU FROGGERS down at the R-walk the other night, not sure why possible game or something down in SA, but they were proudly sportin their TCU gear. IT is lit up and just AMAZING to walk about, not too foot trafficy this year (energy prices and mid holiday). I HOPE the TRV will look as good or even better than the R-Walk, tough to tell now. MAJOR Int'l Mariachi event this week, so the sights and SOUNDS were certainly ALIVE. I also saw many of ASIAN "business" visitors in downtown the other night, side by side with some SA reps. Seems like money just keeps pouring in.

FW was also on the news for some JSF shooting the other day, any news on that?

My old HS made it to the State Finals. Tamales sales are climbing. Seems like a good week overall. Missing the FW chill. See you all soon.

O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Thy trunk is very heavy;
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Thy trunk is very heavy;
When winter winds
hit North Texas
You fell and smashed
that nice Lexus.
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Thy trunk is very heavy;

O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
More cautious thou hast made me;
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
More cautious thou hast made me;
If you must go
near Fort Worth's tree
Protect your car
and take The T.
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
More cautious thou hast made me;

O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
How firmly have they braced thee?
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
How firmly have they braced thee?
If while downtown
you hear them yell
something like "Tim-
ber!", run like hell.
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
How firmly have they braced thee?

Well, thanks, Willy and Andy. If I'd've known you'd be entertained, I'd've tried to finish the Deck the Halls parody. Got too sleepy after the first verse. Oh, well. It's an outlet for a wannabe something-or-other.

Willy - thanks for the encouragement, but 1) the Mrs. insists I used up my turn at grad school and 2) it took a half hour or so to come up with that and I don't think your improv audiences are that patient. Well, there were a few distractions, but still... Yeah, man, I'd love to be able to do that some day.

I think we could do a Forum version of a 4Day skit...they do one word at a time, we could a line or two at a time...

Twas the night before Sundance
and all through the Square
not a grackle was screaching
nor patrons who care
(to be continud by others..)

oh Greg, that's not nearly as creative as yours, but it will keep the Mrs' negative reaction to a minimum...you needn't spend thirty minutes..just two or three..

You really are quite talented!

With apologies before hand, I took your idea and tweaked it a little. This is pretty much my total ability at poetry; 'done wrung my brain dry! blink.gif .

‘Twas the night before Christmas
Down in Ole Sundance Square.
Families come to gaze at
The big tree if they dare.

The grackles were snuggly
Tucked in their nests
Surely tomorrow they won’t
Need Kevlar vests.

People ventured out,
Drinkers and diners,
From the Grape Escape
All the way to Billy Miners.

Snowmen of plastic were on
Lawns green and brown,
For you can be sure
No snow would come down.

One day is hot, the next is cold
Bring shorts, coats and sweaters,
That’s just the way it is with
This crazy Texas weather

Thistle Hill is so grand
in it’s holiday dressing,
Who’ll buy it and love it
Has everyone guessing.

Fort Worth is the best
We say on the forum,
And John’s always there
To watch our decorum.

Please, feel free to tweak away on this one! No, really, please! tongue.gif

Suerto and gdvanc,

The songs and poetry are terrific! But shouldn't they be moved to Arts and Entertainment? biggrin.gif

Thanks, all, for the kind words. (Would've replied sooner, but had to get a lot done at work so wife could have the baby and I could take time off. Done and done - it's a boy! Utter chaos since, of course.)

Dokk - the only thing I remember about Deck the Car With Boughs of Cedar is something like:

What's not broken is at least bent
Fa-la-la-la-la la-la-la-la
But it has that sweet pine tree scent.
Fa-la-la-la-la la-la-la-la
Would it be in this condition
Fa-la-la la-la-la la-la-la
If it were an Expedition?
Fa-la-la-la-la la-la-la-la

Red - love your idea. Too sleepy to follow through just now, but it could be fun!

Seurto - nice job, and thanks for the laughs!

Pup - the tangent should be moved (and the original perhaps as well). I'll take a look later.

Fly - come to think of it, I don't think I've ever heard a Limerick - clean or dirty - about Fort Worth. We should correct that.

At holiday time in Fort Worth
Preparing to acknowledge a birth
Down the tree crashed
The Lexus was smashed
Said the wino: "it coudda been wurth!"

*********************************************

A tree grew in Brooklyn they say
But in Fort Worth one started to sway
The wind blew through town
And tore the connifer down
Too bad for the car in the way

*********************************************

It seemed a good place for the car
With Bass Hall not too terribly far
But down came the tree
And though it missed me
The Lexus was left less than par

In Fort Worth a Lexus was sleeping
With sugarplum dreams and Lords leaping!
But the crush of a pine
Squashed thoughts so sublime
And started the car's alarm beeping.

*****************************************

And, in evidence that good wine IS a creative influence:

The grackle dung covered the car
You could smell it downwind from afar.
She giggled in mirth:
"It's the scent of Fort Worth,
And we sell that perfume by the jar"
