I learned this on Facebook via a post shared by Bud Kennedy that was originally made on the Bankhead Highway History Group. A very sad day.

It saddens me to report that I just received word Pete Charlton, who created this Facebook site a couple of years ago, passed away in his sleep last night. Pete's love for, and vast collection of Fort Worth and Texas maps is well known. I don't have to tell you that the information shared among well over a thousand members of this site is a testament to Pete's unmatched interest in Texas highway history. Our respects go out to his family and many friends. He will be missed.

That's indeed sad. Pete was one of the most passionate local historians and researchers of early Texas transportation that I've met. His posts here were always intelligently written and based on carefully researched information-his presence and vast knowledge will be greatly missed. My prayers are with his family during this time of grief.

That is really sad.  I've known Pete a long time, and he has been a regular contributor to this forum.  He was a great Fort Worth historian.

It's strange seeing someone who is no longer with us still has thoughts up on the internet. I followed him on Facebook. A weird feeling.

Yes... similar to when Sheldon Brown passed. He was a bicycle guru who greatly influenced a lot of cyclists; he was an active poster on bikeforums.net and also put a wealth of bicycle reference data online for reference (even if the pages look straight out of 1993). It's all still there. Although the threads he posted to are mostly forgotten, they still occasionally rise back to the top when someone appends them.

I wonder where Pete's maps will end up? In a museum no doubt.

He was a gentleman and a scholar. His passing is a loss for all of us.

I never met him in person , but we sent messages back in forth about all of our mutual love of Fort Worth . He will be missed by many , my prayers are with petes family and friends .

This news saddens me. I was privileged to meet him a handful of times through different Fort Worth Forum meetups.  He was instantly likeable.  I will very much miss his postings here and on the Bankhead message board.

Very sad news, indeed. HIs knowledge of local history will be missed here, on the FB groups with which he was involved and everywhere else he chose to share.

Per Pete's son Adrian a graveside gathering is scheduled for this Sunday (3/22) at 3:00 PM at Oakwood Cemetery in Fort Worth.  All his friends are welcome to attend.
