#151857 The Old TXU North Main Power Plant

I hate the idea of relying on "benefactors" for anything to happen in this city, BUT someone with pockets and means to use the St. Louis City Museum as a jumping-off-idea could be really cool here:

This past week I saw a banner on the fence for Carswell near the Lowes, I too was surprised that that was the only advertisement I've seen so far.

I also found it "interesting" that a Granbury housing development that targets retirees seemed to be the lead sponsor

I couldn't find a better topic heading to post this, but if there is one, please feel free to move this.

#151498 The Dash bus connector

Posted by txbornviking on 25 March 2024 - 01:09 PM

It's sad but sensible.

The #2 serves residents/workers going from downtown to Cultural District/W7th pretty well. However, there's now half as many buses going that route, and City Hall is coming online soon in the mid-point. I'd not be surprised to see some sort of increase of the #2 just for the sole purpose of being a City Hall lunch shuttle, or maybe even some sort of dedicated route perhaps funded by the City.

Dash, from a tourist perspective, was tricky. On a day-to-day basis, it'd be getting people from the hotels to the museums. My "hot take" is that the museums just aren't that big of a draw, and again, the #2 can do that.

Now, where I will really lament a lack of The Dash is during Dickies Arena events and the FWSSR. I wonder if there is some sort of way to fire up the route for Dickies events, if nothing else just to connect TRE/TEXRail riders to the arena. The museums are an easy walk to the #2 route, Dickies on the other hand is a hike.

During the FWSSR, I think the most in-demand route would be from the WRMC to the Stockyards.

cheesy branding etc, but a special "stockshow roundup route" that was timed to pick up folks from the Fort Worth Central whenever TexRail or the TRE came into the station and run folks to the stockshow would seem smart

#151455 New development proposed on Camp Bowie at Gingerman location?

Posted by txbornviking on 22 March 2024 - 07:22 AM

I took a friend from out of town to Bowie House last weekend. It’s an absolutely gorgeous hotel. The attention to detail is spot on - down to the cocktail napkins. We spent our time mostly in the bar and lobby area. The hallway leading to the Billet room was closed for a private event. It was raining so we didn’t have a chance to walk out to the pool area. The drinks and bar food are certainly not after thoughts. The wood bar restored and bought from an auction is impressive. Overall, the bar area leading into the restaurant felt communal, like you could strike up a conversation easily with folks near you.

I was hoping to check out the underground parking, but you have to valet your car.

I've been curious to make a visit for a drink or two but was curious if there was there a fee for valet (and if so, how much) or just tip?

That seems CRAZY!

Maybe I've missed something, but this project has been talked about for literally 20+years now and this is the first I've heard about needing to raise this section of University.

Was this "new" info for all y'all too?

#150412 Oklahoma City

Posted by txbornviking on 23 January 2024 - 01:54 PM

The developers have now changed their plans, increasing the tower height to 1,907 feet to commemorate the year Oklahoma became a state. That would make it the tallest building in the United States. https://www.dezeen.c...per-tallest-us/

1,907 feet to commemorate the year Oklahoma became a state combined with a goal of 1,776 residential units... these numbers just feel too gimmicky to be believable to me

#150215 Street concrete mounds for bike lane

Posted by txbornviking on 11 January 2024 - 03:40 PM

I don't intend this to sound overly blunt but I am of the belief if you are driving a multi-ton vehicle you should travel at a speed you can control and be aware of your surroundings.

I believe part of the "mounds" purpose is to act as traffic calming devices, to encourage people to slow their speed and move more deliberately rather than zoning out as their cruise by at 45mph+

#150200 TEXRail

Posted by txbornviking on 10 January 2024 - 09:14 AM

Free Rides today for TexRail's 5th birthday.

My wife took it to the airport today for a work trip and not only was the ride free but they were also handing out luggage tags and 50% coupons for future rides (I'll be curious how that's supposed to be redeemed...)

either way, good timing on her part and happy birthday TexRail... now if only we can get some solid momentum on expansion further southward beyond the Medical District.... would be a near dream to get the extension to Berry done is less than 5 more years (though IMO the next terminus should aim to be the previously proposed stop at I-20/Granbury Rd)

#150093 Southside developments

We have this idea that it should be easy for everyone to go anywhere.  With all the new residential going in, there should be enough people that live nearby, that can get to the business without having to drive, to sustain the businesses.  That's kind of the whole point of a walkable neighborhood.

There's definitely going to be some growing pains, and not every business lasts forever, but that's the nature of business.

I live walking distance from Kincaids and the former Original and we really do like having simple restaurants a 10-20min walk from the house, especially on days you just want to cook.

I'll admit I was never a fan of The Original and I was very much hoping a new restaurant would replace it when they moved/kickedout/rooster-came-home-to-roost-regarding-their-perpetual-rent-deal and was SHOCKED to read the quote from the building owners that new merchant shops would be going in as there just wasn't enough parking to sustain a restaurant.

I mean, "not enough parking" when a restaurant had survived for over 100years in the same location seems like a lame perspective.

Then again, I recall about 5 years ago someone wanted to open an indoor childrens playspace (similar to Play Street Musuem over in Waterside) and our NIMBY neighborhood association threw a fit in opposition because there "wouldn't be enough parking for the business"

I'm guessing The Original was grandfathered around parking requirements and the landlords simply didn't want the "fight" of having to seek an adjustment/exemption to whatever code would require for that much restaurant square footage
