Soldier Ride Texas: Pedaling through Dallas-Fort Worth - Robert Miller
Volunteers are encouraged to participate in the Dallas to Fort Worth segment of the Soldier Ride Texas bicycle ride that gets under way at 9:30 a.m. March 27 at the Dallas VA Medical Center, 4500 S. Lancaster Road.
Soldier Ride Texas, which is sponsored by the Wounded Warrior Project, brings 30 wounded warriors from across the country to community bike rides in several Texas cities during the fourth week of March.
The ride gives civilian supporters the chance to ride with heroes from Dallas to Fort Worth, a distance of 40 miles. The ride ends at the Fort Worth Police Academy, and riders can take the Trinity Railway Express train back to Dallas.
During the kickoff ceremony at the VA hospital, Disabled Veterans Chapter 42 of Grand Prairie, which has raised enough money to sponsor 10 riders, will make a presentation to the members of the Wounded Warrior Project.
"The mission of the Wounded Warrior Project is to honor and empower wounded warriors," said ride director Maribeth Lipscomb.
"Its purpose is to raise awareness and to enlist the public's aid for the needs of severely injured service members, to help severely injured men and women assist each other and to provide unique, direct programs and services to meet their needs."
Wounded Warrior Project is a national, apolitical organization with headquarters in Jacksonville, Fla.
"Since Soldier Ride began, warrior participants have received overwhelming public support as they ride through communities across the country," said Steve Nadizzi, executive director of the Wounded Warrior Project.
"Now warriors and registered riders can cheer each other on as they cycle together for a common cause."
The program provides rehabilitation for wounded warriors and raises public awareness for people who have been severely injured during the current conflicts. All participants with a disability or missing limbs can get adaptive equipment customized to their individual needs.

In Paul Bass' memory
On a personal note, we'd like to pay homage to the memory of Paul Bass, a giant among Dallas civic servants, whose funeral is today.
It was an honor to witness and experience his dedication, compassion and, yes, his humor as he performed his countless good deeds with modesty and selflessness.
