Has anyone tried Crossfit? My husband started a program few weeks ago and it's a great workout..I've been going for two weeks (only twice a week) and have already noticed a difference in strength and stamina. Check out what some of the workouts are at crossfit.com.

I've been on the Crossfit at City Club for about six months. I have found it to be the most effective workout program I have ever tried so far.

Wow, I didn't know that the city club had crossfit. My husband interned at their fitness center during college and enjoyed it. The workouts are effective...they are especially helpful for me in training for triathlons because you don't have to wear out your joints with as much cardio as you would normally train with.

We are considering opening a crossfit gym in Fort Worth, ideal locations are somewhat unfinished, warehouse-ish spaces. We'd prefer somewhere in the west 7th area (or in a mile or so radius) Does anyone have any ideas?

I know...I hear it's a very good program there. I'd love to find a spot that doesn't compete with them.

Sarah, I think for that general area you'd probably have to look north of White Settlement Road to get a space that was affordable. Everything between 7th and Lancaster is going to be outrageously expensive now.

It looks like central and southwest areas may be covered. Perhaps something in the Keller area would meet the demand and demographics of potential clients. I would imagine interested people in that area would rather not deal with the hassle of going downtown or to Vickery.

yes, rents are probably going to be crazy in the area we'd like to be in...maybe a spot near Race st. would work. As for Keller...we've kicked the idea of either Keller or Mansfield around but we'd really rather stay in Fort Worth. I have an irrational dislike for suburban areas. Business wise it would probably be the way to go, though.

There's nothing irrational about a dislike for suburban areas. In fact, it is a indication of sanity!

Thanks! I'm under the influence of family...once you're 27 and married it's expected of you to instantly crave 2,000 square feet of house in the middle of nowhere with all the wal-mart you can handle. Both sets of parents think we're weird for wanting to stay in Fort Worth, even when we decide to have kids. CrossFit would certainly do well in one of these (awful) areas but I just don't think I can do it!

that's the plan but there's not a whole lot of that kind of (affordable) space nearby the "urban core" area...

Find a place yet, Sarah?

I haven't tried CrossFit, but I Googled it after reading your post and really liked what I saw. I prefer programs that mix in a lot of body weight exercises, whole-body exercises, and functional fitness. Not that you can tell by looking at my little stick body.

One of the businesses I dream about opening if I win the lottery a few times is a gym. I've probably given a lot more thought to it than is due considering my odds of winning the lottery a few times.

It will take a ton of money because one of my dream locations for it - don't laugh - is the T&P Warehouse. Bottom floor or three dedicated to retail: healthy lifestyle/fitness type retail. Maybe some space for offices. Several big floor plates with lots of room to work yourself on out. Maybe green up the top of the building for some grass drills but then roll out the tables for evening entertaining.

I'm sure the location is entirely impractical, but it's still a dream.

Anyway, if money is no object, that's where I suggest you put your gym. That place could be very cool.

How much space do you need for this "crossfit"?

I know of one place near the 7th St. and DTFW corridor. They may need some extra fitness camps or classes to fill in those OFFSEASON gaps. The place is ultra low budg but it is a great location that offers plenty of street parking. I say just throw em $2500/month and do your thing.

What rent price range are you talking about here Sarah?

Actually, our plans have been delayed a bit due to some personal issues... we haven't found a place yet but I'm interested in hearing more abou the place near 7th Safly. We're looking (or trying to look) at a spot on Foch but the realtor won't call us back. I'm not sure how much space is needed, but it doesn't have to be much - just a wide open room, preferably with durable concrete floors. As far as rent I have no idea -- it's actually my husband's business and he is working on a business plan. And gdvanc, the T&P would be great, but sadly is probably a dream. We had a spot picked out in Keller because we want it to also have room for a kids' martial arts studio but the deal fell through (I was secretly relieved). Now I think he's going to stick to crossfit only but we'll see what kind of spaces he finds.

How about a space on Magnolia?

Magnolia would probably be really great. The main concern with magnolia (and 7th for that matter) is the proximity to GSX on Vickery...

I don't think it would be as much of a problem as you might think. In fact, you're likely to gain some Southsiders that don't want to drive to Vickery to work out.

Sarah, are you trying to stay some minimum distance from any competitor, or is GSX particularly scary?

My impression of the Magnolia area is that there is a strong and developing sense of community that is supportive of community-local businesses. If you execute well (on the fitness programs but also on the overall customer experience) and have a sincere passion for that community, it's strikes me as the type of environment in which you can build strong ties and emotional bonds that will not only make your business successful but also make it more enjoyable and fulfilling to operate. How much more would you have to make with a gym out in Aledo to get that same level of satisfaction? With the right approach, you can survive the presence of a GSX a few miles down the road.

I agree, and that is important to establish with any business. SOUL fitness out on Montgomery Ave. is a great blueprint to examine and they have proven themselves in this market for about 5 years now.

I think my husband and his business partner are concerned about GSX because CrossFit is relatively new and they're not sure how much of a market there is for it in a five-mile radius ... although, the program he is running right now is doing really well and they're begining to think they've got enough of a need to have two programs...

I know it's been two years since I first posted this, but it looks like our CrossFit gym is becoming a reality in the near southside! Aleshia Howe at the Business Press wrote about it here:

Hi everyone! It's been a long time since we posted this thread but I just wanted to let you all know that our grand opening is Saturday, Feb. 12 (next weekend) and we would really love to see a lot of people come check it out! Here's the schedule of the free classes for the day:

So I joined a gym while I was in Odessa and droppped about 130 lbs over the last 2 years. Job change brings me back to Fort Worth and I am looking for a new gym in the downtown vicinity. I remember getting stuff from City Club, but their website seems to be down. Do they still exist?

I see www.brandtfitness.com still works.

Also looking at Inursha on west 7th, noquitters on Bailey, and worst case scenario, I would haul my butt all the way back to the 24 hour fitness in the burbs. Not interested in Larry North downtown, but looking for recommendations for a decent club.

I recommend the downtown YMCA. I've been going there for 6+ years ... I've tried out LA Fitness and 24 Hour a couple times, but still returned to the Y. I use it mostly for individual weights and cardio because those fit into my schedule best, but the few classes I've taken have also been good. They did a big renovation in the past two or three years, so it's probably a lot nicer than what you would have seen when you lived in Fort Worth before. Plus, it feels good to know that your fees go toward helping disadvantaged children in the area.
