  • Texas is the second-largest destination for migrants.
  • Over 500,000 people moved to Texas in 2012.
  • People tend to come from the Southeast, Southwest, and the West, with the biggest contributor being California.
  • 62,702 Californians packed up and moved to the Lone Star state in 2012.

Not too surprising. Our climates are similar (at least when you move inland from the CA coast)  and the cost of living is usually cheaper in Texas. We finally have California natives Trader Joe's and In & Out burgers as well as enough freeway traffic around our biggest Texas cities to make most Californians feel right at home. Similar heritage for both states-formerly Spanish-Mexican with many Spanish place names. Both now have large and growing Hispanic populations and cultures. The only thing different is that Californians tend to be more socially/politically liberal but lets also not forget that the icon of conservatism, Ronald Reagan, was not only president but formerly the Governor of California. Although my roots are in Texas I've lived in Northern CA (Sonoma Co.) too and found friendly people in both places. I think California ex-pats should be welcomed in Texas as long as they have an open mind and a tolerant attitude. (which most do)  For what they can get for selling their homes in CA they can often upgrade to a mansion level home in Texas. They also keep more money in their pockets as they reap the benefits of no state income tax. No wonder Gov. Perry has gone out to California to pitch Texas to local companies and talent. I had a California guest visit here for a few days in October and he was very favorably impressed with Fort Worth. Bet there's a lot more like him out in CA. In conclusion, I personally think the California influx is a good thing.

Maybe it's the frequent sunshine and relatively milder weather that makes California and Texas comparable. (with the exception of Texas's tornadoes and hurricanes; California's earthquakes and forest fires).  Certainly the history and culture have contributed to a "can do" spirit among the inhabitants of both states.
