Amazon has signed a lease for 68 acres on Westport Parkway. Not much information has been released, but it appears the company will be investing in Texas now that they have to charge sales taxes.

Just as the "Wild West" days came to a close with the arrival of barbed wire fences, so too the sales tax-free advantages of Internet buying are disappearing rapidly. The lost tax revenues by local and state governments have long been coveted by the same and now will have to be paid. This sales tax free environment put online sellers at an advantage over their local retail counterparts but no more. We're lucky they are not charging us V.A.T. (value-added-taxes) as they do on the other side of the Pond and in many European countries....or, at least, not yet. Good to have a regional Amazon distribution center locally; it will certainly help the local job market but warehouse jobs typically don't pay very well.

That sounds really nice. Amazon is such a huge force in the shipping bussiness nowadays. I use it all the time. I'd really like to see Fort Worth more involved with the internet business.

The article mentions that one of the sites--either Alliance or Coppell--will be a "fulfillment center".  So, I'm guessing the other site will be a distribution or shipping center.  Now, I'm no authority on warehousing and shipping, but here's a thought, which may be wrong...Amazon has two separate functions--one to store its products and process orders, which is the fulfillment or warehouse center.  The other is distribution, taking products from the warehouse on order to be shipped to recipients nationwide.  Amazon recently decided to close its distribution center in Irving.  I have learned that Amazon uses UPS in its fulfillment center operations and FedEx for its shipping operations.  Now, I understand that Coppell is a UPS hub; Alliance Airport is a FedEx Air hub.  So my guess is that the fulfillment center will be located in Coppell and the shipping center in Haslett.

As I understand it, Amazon gave up on the sales tax issue because it is changing its business to same- or next-day shipping. I wouldn't count on that many warehouse jobs, ill-paying or not, because Amazon heavily uses Kiva robots in its warehouses, even going so far as to purchase Kiva.

Not seeing this in the Star-Telegram but the Dallas Morning News reports that Amazon has selected Alliance for a regional air hub and hundreds of jobs. https://www.dallasne...b-hundreds-jobs

Wow! That's a major deal, that could turn into something more major. It's not too hard to imagine Amazon budding its own package delivery service, and if Alliance turns into the dominant hub, we could see two North Texas airport on the top ten list of domestic cargo airports. Alliance is #30 on this list:

They currently have a fleet of 40 leased planes with a couple of operators and I'm sure they contract with other freight operators as well. They still use UPS and USPS, but I'm increasingly getting packages directly through Amazon drivers, especially on weekends. They use hired on drivers and I believe they're still using contract drivers similar to Uber.

Totally serious. If Amazon is going to take delivery in-house, maybe even compete directly against UPS, FedEx and USPS, I love to see Alliance become the dominant logistics hub.

UPS and USPS have created their own monster.  I knew it would be just a manner of time before Amazon created their own delivery service.

Really cementing aviation as Fort Worth's industry leader. The O&G days have peaked.

Nothing really new here, but more positive "press" about the Alliance center:

Amazon is growing in-house and might one day challenge FedEx, UPS and USPS package delivery service. Hopefully Alliance will be the top Amazon hub....

In October, the company is set to open its Regional Air Hub at the Fort Worth Alliance Airport, creating 300 full-time jobs to aid in the delivery of packages across North Texas, according to a press release from Amazon. The center will support Amazon Air, the companys fleet of planes that make quick deliveries possible.

I wonder if Amazon is broken up to comply with long-neglected Anti-Trust legislation, will the air service survive as a stand-alone? Could it be based out of Fort Worth? Good weather, central location, expansion room...
