Assuming the Texas Governor actually has the power to make or break a state, Texas does appear to be fairing better than most states in many key areas. If he won it would be good for Texas because at least he wouldn't be governor anymore.

Does the fact that a good percentage of Texas students speak English as a second language factor into some of Texas' low rankings? I wouldn't mind adding a bilingual requirement for all K12 level schools. I know throwing money at the scholastic issues did nothing where national rankings were concerned, unless you wanted to account administrative staff at the high end of pay scales.I'm sure educators and students in Texas wouldn't share that sentiment.
I seriously doubt anyone can solve the public education system's problems, first and foremost, no one can agree exactly what the problems are. Then to add a bit more complexity to an already complex set of problems, issues in DFW may not carry the same importance as those in El Paso or Houston.

This could prove interesting.
Gov Rick Perry says he's considering a presidential run. - Star Telegram Article
It depends greatly upon your meaning of "interesting"
The electoral count in 2008 was Obama 365 – McCain 173. In only three states was the winning percentage by either candidate less than 1%. Of those three states, Obama won Florida and North Carolina; McCain won Missouri. Obama was closer to winning in Missouri than was McCain in winning either Florida or North Carolina. This week, President Obama approval ratings are up considerably in Florida and North Carolina; and even greater in Joplin and in Missouri as a whole; meanwhile in Texas, Rick Perry polls poorly.
http://tpmdc.talking...gop-primary.php
Where does Perry change, if any, the electoral map that McCain was unable to do?

Time will tell, but in a field where Palin is the front runner, anything is possible.

If I polled the right 388 people I'm sure I could come up with almost any outcome I wanted.
Time will tell, but in a field where Palin is the front runner, anything is possible.
True enough, polls are merely a snapshot in time; and as such, they are often unreliable. In the actual poll taking November 2008, Palin was soundly defeated, even though it seems she is still unaware of it by claiming as recent as this week in her film that she is "Undefeated".
But, if you meant adding Perry to the mix of Palin and the Others, then I do agree with you about some interesting times ahead of us; in particular watching Perry join the sideshow of Conservatives going out onto the wacky fringes to out do one another. Of course Perry's secessionist remarks places him a strong favorite to win the Wacky Derby.

If he runs, does that mean he has to step down, or can he stay in office while he does o.
Unlike people in the public sector, don't many just delegate then fall back into their old spot should things not pan out.

Yuk. We have detested this evil man since he took over the Dept of Ag from the creative and progressive Jim Hightower. But we usually do this sort of rant on our FB page or on political forums. Keep FW folksy and keep the forum about architecture and local history!
How about a dedicated section on the forum for local and regional government? This is certainly an important facet of life in the city.

Whatever the members of the forum want, I can easily provide. I've always wanted to steer the focus of the forum away from politics. I've always felt that a political thread, every now and then, was perfectly acceptable. I would be willing to run a poll under the Website and Forum section to see if there is enough interest.
I have a Politics section set up, just need to get the permissions right to make if visible, I'll then migrate the political threads to it.

Not being partisan here, but i hope Mr. Perry doesn't seek another term as governor. Regardless of his merits, or lack thereof, in that office, I think he should give others a chance out of love for Texas. Or, if only to inject new blood into the gubernatorial perspective.

Brief follow-up: A few of my Facebook friends in the know believe the governor's health has deteriorated, of late. One who saw him personally recently suspects his condition has not improved. One even thinks he had a stroke. Or maybe his diminished speaking skills is the result of prescription drug usage. Anyone here have any news?

This is not an endorsement of the topic headline...but since the thread is about Rick Perry, I for one believe he made a wise decision not to run for re-election as governor. The state could use some competition in the governor's race as well as a new occupant of the governor's mansion

Not sure on the Democrat side, but could be that former Houston Mayor Bill White tries again (he ran against Perry in 2010 but lost). May possibly be challenged in the primary by Wendy Davis and San Antonio's Julian Castro.

That is true at present. But I wouldn't dismiss her based solely on that factor. Sen. Davis is a charismatic political figure and that's important in drawing crowds, in getting people to campaign for you, and, of course, in fund-raising. Perry was good at this across the state, which is why he was a perennially elected governor. Julian Castro is also charismatic, especially among Hispanic voters (who have not yet truly exercised their power as an electorate in Texas). Bill White's plus is his experience as a mayor and his intellectual prowess, though he is not a great stump speaker. Not familiar with Greg Abbott as a political candidate, but he does have the advantage that Texas is still a "red" state.

My postscript on the upcoming gubernatorial election campaign: Have read that perennial democrat (or independent?) candidate Kinky Friedman is contemplating another run. Everyone's free to run, but if I had a political say as to who should vie in the democratic primary I'd advise Kinky to stay out. Nothing against Kinky as a person, he's a pleasant humorist and good-natured fellow. But he's also become a caricature to voters--i.e., they don't take him seriously (for those old enough to remember, Will Rogers and Mark Twain were world-famous humorists but neither was elected to public office). Just my opinion.

Gov. Rick Perry is dispatching 1,000 fully armed Texas National Guardsmen to the Rio Grande for what?.. to defend us from a swarm of "Killer Babies".....Shame on you Rick Perry!

I'm more concerned about the governor's position as to the role the Guard will play in combatting the drug cartels along the Rio Grande. Not being naïve to say no drug cartels are operating there, I just wonder if the Guard isn't being placed in harm's way. Now, the governor's reasoning is that the Guard will play a supporting role in relief of the border patrol. But as to the kids from Honduras et al., I doubt it they warrant a heavily armed Guard presence.

This seems more like a political move so that during the 2016 Republican National Convention's candidates debate in Cleveland, Perry can score talking points by stating how tough he was on illegal immigration while he was Governor. I'm sure the soundbites and photo ops from this action will be prominent in Perry's campaign videos. However, as far as being effective at slowing or stopping the flow of illegal immigrants/refugees beyond the abilities of the Border Patrol/Homeland Security agents already in place, that's debatable. Curbing and controlling illegal immigration is an important item on the Republican party's platform agenda-I expect in the unlikely event Perry becomes the official candidate, he will then downplay immigration reform to appeal to a broader voting audience. But to get there, he has to be more conservative and portray himself as ideologically farther to the right during the candidate selection process than he actually is. (to appeal to the strong Tea Party/Constitutionalist wing within the Republican party) Perry may be described by some as a W Bush clone but I think either he or someone on his team is a very good political strategist. I expect he will make a stronger showing at the 2016 RNC in Cleveland than he did at the last convention. (notable for his "oops" gaff incident) That said, I think he will be up against some strong competitors so he will have to talk the talk, show Conservative ideological purity, and preach to the party faithful to move ahead to the presidential candidate front runners. He has a chance, IMO.

He may be running for president, but what is he getting the Texas National Guard (and the Texas Department of Public Safety) into? "...'tip of the spear' in the fight against cartels and gangs..." ???
Or is this just pseudo campaign saber rattling?

I'm not trying to be overly critical here and underestimating the drug cartel situation on the border...if, indeed, it is real. I don't know, haven't been down there. But if these cartels are armed and dangerous, they would be shooting at the Guard and DPS, not to mention the Border Patrol. I'm concerned as any Texas resident about illegal immigration. But Honduran kids and poor Mexican farmers is one thing. "Narcoterrorists" are an entirely different breed. I believe the governor should refrain from "tip of the spear" bravado declarations and be clear to Texans that he's placing the state Guard in a combat role, if that's what he intends to do.
Regarding the state Guard missions...yes, they've been more active in combat roles overseas in the last few decades. Iraq, Afghanistan. Back in the states, the most active military use of the Guard has been to quell civil unrest. I would suspect, however, that combatting drug cartels would be a lot more dangerous.

It's just depressing how broken our entire border situation is. We have some property in far West Texas about 10 miles from the border so I see it first-hand all the time. People literally would not believe the resources that the Border Patrol has been allocated since September 11th. Huge modern new facilities in every town from El Paso on down...Fort Hancock, Sierra Blanca, Van Horn, Marfa, Alpine, Marathon, etc. And yet starting with Sierrra Blanca these towns are nowhere near the ACTUAL border. So there are 100 agents in each town, stationed 30-80 miles from the border, and they run around all day in helicopters, ATV's, SUV's, etc. chasing people over vast distances when their motion detectors are set off 25 miles away.
Any idiot can tell you that if we want to keep people from crossing the border, the way to do that is to actually patrol ON the border. There is no doubt in my mind that with the resources that have been wasted on this effort over the past decade+, we could have a 2 lane highway and a 15 foot fence along the entire length of the Rio Grande from the gulf to El Paso.

Since the topic here is the border crossing of illegal immigrants and our governor's involvement, I thought it interesting to download this article in which Gov. Perry conjectures that ISIS members may be sneaking into Texas from Mexico. Upon first reading, I obviously felt alarm as would any Texan. But the governor states he has no "clear evidence" to support his suspicion. If its unsupported, then is this alarmist talk really necessary?

[Perry] faith-based solutions to every problem, and the militarization of the border.
With prayer rugs turning up in greater numbers along the border, border agents receiving briefings on ISIS, I predict a time in our near future when some of the recent actions are considered prophetic.
See, there lies the rub. Two religious ideologies going to war with each other.
I am willing to guess that most Americans are not in favor of a crusade regardless of the sides.

The problem is not that ESL kids are dumb, it's because they can't read the test in English.
We have the kids that we have. Raising standards higher and higher with only one assessment method - a standardized written test - ignores the needs and strengths of the students.
We need to stop equating a lack of English skills with a lack of intelligence, and start being real about the students who attend our public schools.
If we do this, the next generation of adults will benefit greatly.
So, to tie this back to the race for governor, I am voting for the candidate with the best education policy, because I am going to be employed in this sector in less than a year, and because I care about students.
