Though this Fort Worth Business Press editorial by Robert Francis is focused on Will Rogers and the naming our first coliseum after this historical figure, I learned something new about Amon G. Carter. Mainly, he was feisty and persistent in his promotional crusade in behalf of Fort Worth and, especially, our city's rivalry with Dallas.

You should read Jerry Flemmon's "Amon". There has never been anyone else quite like him. He drove a stagecoach through Manhattan. He leaped up on a table in an exclusive New York restaurant, fired his colt 45's in the air (blanks, hopefully) and shouted "Hooray for Fort Worth and West Texas".
He personally wrote the name in the member register of every member of the Fort Worth Club. He presented a cowboy hat in his own particular block, the 'Shady Oaks" to every distinguished personage who ever visited Fort Worth. The stories go on and on.

Mentioned in article- "Amon" by Jerry Flemmings ( published 1976.) Highly recommended to anyone who is curious as to how Fort Worth got to here as a city. "Hell's Half Acre" by Richard F. Selcer ( published 1991,) as well. And for harmless entertainment, "The Lake Worth Monster" by Sallie Anne Clarke. One more you might enjoy are 2 chapters in "The Super Americans" by John Bainbridge ( published 1961,) which draws a direct contrast between the upper crust of Little "d" and Fort Worth of the 1950's.
