Edelweiss this past Saturday.

Can't afford to drink here on a regular basis, but great food and nice selection of beer and wine (although primarily German). Potato cakes seemed a little crunchier than I have had in past, but that may just be the way they do them. Wurst plate was good und der sauerbraten schmeckt gut zu mir.

They had the Rahr Red beer on draft. I've pretty much decided I much prefer the ugly pug over the red, actually I am to the point that I think I can just plain say I don't like the red.

Doesn't really fit the category of this thread, but it was the best I could muster this past weekend.

Gee, Safly, except that you're making work for me, that sounds like a good idea. Maybe I could help Lobs soup up his pub section.

I didn't mean to be that harsh on Rick's. Again, it was the only place I saw a pool table at, and I could see being there on a regular basis, but I will continue to look around.

As for a FWAForum pub crawl, I don't know how many people on here are the pub type, but I always enjoy meeting forumers.

I made a recon pass through a couple places last Saturday evening.

The Library: 11:00 PM
$2.00 drink specials on “everything” I think.
Crowd - college age on a budget, drinking “hey look at me shots.”
Okay place to start the evening but not a final destination.

Pluses: Drink specials.

Minuses: Those that are only there for the drink specials.

8.0s:
1st pass 10:00 PM
2nd pass 12:00 AM
If you drink beer you’ll have no problems, outside band is generally good and the beer girls outside are always stocked up and you’re served faster than you can put your money down. If you prefer anything other than hops you’ll have to enter the combat zone, 3 to 5 rows deep at either of the two bars and that’s if you can make it past those that have to stand inside to carry on their conversations while their friends are in line at the ATM.

Pluses: Very eclectic crowd, from wedding parties, bridal showers to guys’ night out, young and old, attire from Prada to flip flops.

Minuses: They need someone outside serving fru fru drinks to lessen the overload on the interior bartenders and locate the ATM “away” from any major crowd thoroughfare and place a big sign there instead that says “ATM” with an arrow pointing the way.

I went to the Library once when they had $1.00 drink specials. Definitely a minus after about six of them.

I'm very picky about my bars--always searching for that perfect place. Have yet to find one in FW.

Andy, if you are willing to venture out of Downtown, there are some great places in the Cultural District I think I've mentioned before: Sal Louie's and Pop's Safari.

Yeah, I only had enough energy to hit one place in/near cultural district the other night. JJ's Hideaway came highly recommended by the bartender at the Fox & Hound, so I went there. Pop's Safari was also mentioned, so I will be trying to get over there before too long.

Thanks for the reports, David.

"okay, now i get it. back at USC (that is, the university of south cooper - now i think they call it u of t @ a) we would call such a place bentley's. same atmosphere. same friendliness. same have me drink waitin' before i got to the table. hopped on a plane to philly to be at one of the waitress' weddings. ah, how i miss it sometimes."

Yeah, I miss Bentley's as well. The new one over on Abrams is not anything like the one I went to while in college.

As to the Bats in the Fox and Hound, there were about 1800 that died recently, and about 1200 were rescued, treated (rehydrated and fed) and released in other areas. A friend and fellow member of the newly-founded "Cowtown Grotto" caving club is a bat rehabilitator (seriously, folks!) and worked to save the little flying mammals for several days last week. Apparently the long neglected building had bats living between walls, and new construction related to the condos/apartments being constructed sealed an entrance, and the trapped bats suffered. It is true that they are a federally-protected migratory species. They are probably not residing in the building any longer.

So Drink Up!

Anybody remember the night about 15 years ago when it rained dead bats outside that building?

For some reason, they just started plummeting to the ground outside the front door one night when it was the Kress Club.

Aren’t they building bat boxes in parks now? That’s one of the things I like about downtown, no mosquitoes. I knew they ate a good number in a single night but I didn’t realize they can consume 500 to 1200 mosquitoes in a single hour, that’s one bat in one hour.

the mosquitos are there, just not in full force like you would see near a lake or creek. Been bitten before plenty o times, must give off too much CO2. But then again, what downtowns in America have mosquito problems?

I know Austin doesn't but I think it may have something to do with the 1.5 million Mexican Free Tailed bats that make Austin home for the summer.

The Fort Worth insect population may get a bit worse with the recent population decrease.

I’d like to see bat habitats created under the Trinity River bridges; it was just a fluke that the bridges built in Austin had crevices that were of the perfect dimension for bat habitats. It would be the perfect relationship; the bats would police the city for insects, and the guano would drop into the river feeding the fish and keeping the city tidy.

SouthSideAllen, going to a pub is not necessarily about drinking alcohol. I like to think that I consume in moderation. There have been many times when I would meet the gang after work and drink nothing but sodas. Sometimes I am there for a quick bite to eat. That's what I am looking for in a bar & grill. Someplace comfortable to hang out. If I don't find the right place, I might go crazy and attempt to start my own.

IN the meantime, though.... I have a couple of business and personal obligations to attend to including a quick trip to Tampa and New Orleans. Since nobody else has suggestion a date for the Fort Worth Forum Pub Crawl, I would put June 24th up as a suggested date. Who's with me?

This is a fantastic idea. I bet if it were ever done, someone out there would complain about 'bat safety' or somesuch.

Wasn't there an outcry (from un-informed people, obviously) recently about bat houses being erected in a local park?

Seeing the Mexican freetailed bats that live (part of the year) under the Congress Ave bridge is one of the greatest sights in Texas.

Spring/summer is here, and so are the bats. I may make a trip down this weekend just to see them and have some blackbean soup and a couple beers.

Lets get something started with the currnt bridges and what will be new ones with the Trinity River Vision Project (or whatever its called).

I'd be in, mostly because your search parallels mine in this town.

I've yet to come across just the right place.

It has to be prefectly laid back, yet not dumpy. If a chain, a tiny reigonal one, and have a great selection of beer and food.

yeah, I'm in. What are the places in question?

Beneath the Main St. Bridge would be a PERFECT bat house spot. Nice view from there during a late day jog. you can also view the bats from above near the Trinity viewing decks by the water fountains. GREAT IDEER!

I stopped in The Pour House to catch a Red Sox game, needed a study break, service was great, much improved.

The band even waited until most of the games were over before they started playing.

Kudos...

They change every other season, seems to be a moving target, crowds vary by night of the week, drink specials and form of entertainment for the given evening. I’ve been trying to locate the nights and locations of the over 30 crowds, really tired of the “lets get drunk and be somebody or be somebody else” crowd.

I have learned to not waste my limited recreation time on any establishment having a hospitality night due to the blatant discrimination against anyone that appears to be too old to belong.

We will see how long it lasts, but Shamrock has a nice over 30 crowd on Sunday nights.

has anyone seen this news yet, speaking of the shamrock? It's from the weekly's blog:

"In a couple of weeks, the Shamrock Pub will become Poag Mahone’s, according to Matt McEntire, who owns the Shamrock building on West Seventh Street, plus the 50-space parking lot behind the pub and the Carroll Street building that houses the Bronx Zoo Sports Café. McEntire has leased the Shamrock/Poag’s space to three people: two Sham bartenders -- Chris Ledbetter and McEntire’s stepson, Will Wells -- and Glen Riley, a manager at Reata. McEntire purchased most of the property on the west side of the West Seventh-Carroll intersection only recently. The only building he does not own is on the actual corner of West Seventh and Carroll, former home of the Seventh Street Station Grill and future site of the third incarnation of the popular Westside bar, the 7th Haven.

McEntire is trying to sign the Bronx Zoo’s owner, Tom Gallant, to a new lease. “He’s been there for a long time,” McEntire said, “so he has the first opportunity.” Whether or not the Bronx Zoo decides to stay, McEntire plans on spending the next year redoing the place. If the Bronx Zoo moves, McEntire will probably reopen the Shamrock Pub there."

I've seen a chain and lock on the gate of Paddy Red's for the last couple of weeks, so I assume it is now closed down?  Anyone know if there is a new pub or restaurant planned for that space?

Since I ride with the Night Riders, I'm aware of several pubs.

. As mentioned above:  Conlon's on White Settlement, east of University.  A bit smoky but not too bad.  I like the place.  Liam's even ridden with our group once or twice.

. Malone's a bit east of the Water Gardens.  Nice little place, cheap, nice ownership.  They got ride of the smoke several years ago except for the front patio.

. Houston Street Bar.  Another good place near the Convention Center.

. Royal Falcon Pub on the east side of the 183 traffic circle.  Probably the smokiest of the pubs I've named so far but it has a certain charm.

Paddy Red's does appear to be closed. Not only is their physical location locked as you described, but their facebook page is gone and their last tweet was from July 30, 2016: "Due to technical difficulties we will be closed until Monday. Hope to see u back Monday." They tweeted quite regularly up to that point so I'm guessing they never reopened.

Edit: Apparently they went under. According to TAD, they own the space so it's hard to tell what will happen with it.
