The Star-Telegram's Alex Branch reports on Twitter:

Big news for FW homeless community: Officials announce plans for central resource facility to offer medical home, other services. The Fort Worth Foundation will build the 25,000-square-foot homeless resource center on 1.5 acres at 1513 Presidio St. Buying land from JPS.

The site is a block south of East Lancaster, several blocks east of I-35W.

I'm sure a full report will be posted later today; the S-T reporters often tweet from the scene and follow up with details and background later.

Something like this has been needed for some time in Fort Worth. There seems to be a very sizable number of homeless people here, as evidenced by "settlements" along East Lancaster and along the TRE tracks near SH-121. I am sure there are many other places where these folks gather. It would be great to have MHMR, TCC and Texas Workforce Commission partner in this effort, as mental illness, education and jobs training are up there with substance abuse and health concerns as issues driving the homeless problem. "one-stop-shopping" to help those homeless who wish to escape that social trap can only be a good thing.

Maybe the city/ state  could do something like the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) did back in 1933 - 1942.

Work is a good thing.  Call it the TCC  Tarrant Conservation Corp

My Sociology class actually held a feed the homeless day Thursday at the Red Cross at Lancaaster,  and I know others do. I know TCC does a few nice things for the community.

I wonder if there would be a way to offer free or significntly reduced prices for classes to homeless, especially for drug rehabilitation or whatnot.

I work in that part of town on a regular basis. There are resources galore for those who are want to get it. Many of them are doing the work necessary to solve whatever personal problems/addictions that got them there. There are many, though, who choose to live like that. Free food, free lodging, no responsibilities, free medical care, and somehow they get cell phones (no joke, just about all of them have smart phones).

It surely does not take specialized skills to pick up litter.  Seems like that should be a minimum requirement for anything free.  Bring me a bag of stinky trash in exchange for a plate of food.

This link copied from above is pretty good... Their Facebook page seems to be developing well...

This is such a complex problem that there are no really simple answers.

Most of those that we have elected to represent us seem to be clueless or else are following a cruel agenda that only adds to the dilemma...

Mayor Betsy (as I like to call her) recently spent some time on a corner downtown, holding a cardboard sign to raise awareness. Symbolic or not, I think it shows that she is aware and paying attention.

Caty Hirst's article in S-T includes statements by those opposed to the project.  The principal objection is that an "economic deadzone" (quoted from story) is being created in the East Lancaster area.  I'm not taking sides here, just reporting,  In fact, my thought is that a modern-designed building may actually enhance the quality of the neighborhood and encourage further gentrification.

Nice curb appeal.  BBP is on a roll.  I would think that it would fit comfortably into a great number of neighborhoods, east, west, north and south. I suppose the relatively cheaper cost of land at the proposed location will enable the HRC to have a greater amount of funds to go directly into helping those in need.

It's an investment in great architecture.  It can remain a resource center, but I also see the appeal as an office or mixed-use space. Well done.

With it's proximity to the homeless shelters, I imagine it will transform into a campground.

Actually there is already a campground just north of the Golf Course in an open field east of Hwy 287

The issues surrounding homelessness are many and are complex.

It is not easily comprehensible why or where campgrounds form; but when they do, it came have strategic advantages.

It may be that a campground where homeless people gather during the night is important for distributing warm meals, vaccines, and clothing for a number of those who are in need of these services.

IMO, it is an easier task and it also may curtail more campgrounds to form elsewhere when the homeless feel as though their desires are being taken into account.
