[Tacoma]

Has anybody noticed an abundance of spiky cacti around the sidewalks in the West 7th area?  Into the West Furniture has real cacti with real points in the bed next to the sidewalk.  And the White Buffalo apartment complex (southwest of Fred''s) has cacti situation in the beds right by the sidewalks.  With the spikes, i find myself moving away slightly as I approach and would imagine others do the same.  For a "pedestrian-friendly" area why would they put cacti in?

 

Lanny's Alta Cocina has had cacti for years but they are spineless.  But these folks in the 7th street area have actual spiky cacti.

I love succulents, as long as they are pruned.  Unmaintained cacti, yucca and the like are quite detracting.  There is a house near me with two huge spikey yuccas spilling onto the sidewalk.  But I remember when they were small, and it was nice.

I don't know how much good pruning matters when they are right next to the sidewalk.  I grew up in an area with cacti and have enough experience with them to give a wide berth.  And if I were in shorts, it would be wider. 

 

Just seems odd to plant such an anti-leg friendly plant right next to a sidewalk.
