Was a very nice event. (A bit sticky. A little breeze would have been grand.) Pretty well attended including all the movers and shakers, including the Fort Worth Housing people whom are converting this structure. (For low rent living for poor people I guess.)
I have always loved this building, mostly for its rich past. Was in the middle of Near East Black neighborhood. I bet we get more info on the history of this building as we move forward re-building it. (We, as taxpayers)
I had a busy work day yesterday but was able to go in late enough to attend this event and get some photos.

That area changed a LOT between 1990 (row houses and vacant lots) and 2001 (much as it is today).
Sure enough. And like so many areas and structures, you would like to preserve the past but just not in the same place that you want fresh and new. That neighborhood was just old. Not nice, pretty, terribly historic or anything. A few interesting tales, but not enough to have such a bad area so close to downtown. I would have gone for a custom neighborhood of fine homes but will sure enough take what we got. It is a really lovely neighborhood. The main thing is that it always looks well kept and pretty. They do a great job in Hillside.

I went to the groundbreaking ceremony for the Knights of Pythias Building reconstruction. (Thanks for the heads up Janna)

Not sure if you are already privy to this information, but worth asking. Will there be a waiting list for the buildings before the opening?

Janna, that is positive news there....Just because the Housing Authority owns the KOP Lofts, does not mean it will be Section 8
Now I've might have overlooked it, but when does the actual construction work suppose to take place?

I hadn't actually been there since they started the work, but, by looking at Brian's picture from 11/15, it would appear that very little progress has been made.

So pleased to see this building renovated. I'm sorry that our company wasn't able to completed ourselves. But happy that it will be repurposed as a great addition to the already super Hillside area.

You'd think in three months they could have closed it up by now.....

Yes, you would think that the KOP would be almost finished by now but it's not. I have a new appreciation for DIRT. There were lots of problems getting the right dirt but that has finally happened and they are now building the new building that will be beside the old one. I'll have Brian Luenser post a picture of the constuction site.

So are are these just going to be regular apartments and lofts or are intended for families in distress?

FYI.......There will be some AFFORDABLE apartments and MARKET rate apartments, just like Hillside Apartments. Just because the Housing Authority owns the KOP Lofts, does not mean it will be Section 8. One bedrooms will probably start around $750 per month for the affordable rates and up to $1050 for the market rates. The projected grand opening is in about 9 months!!
David Love, Here is Janna's reply to a similar question. I would say "families in distress" is not the target audience, but perhaps families or couples with one breadwinner, for example.

I just remember reading some "early" article on them and it was sold as good for young families that needed help by being within walking distance to jobs etc... and I remember some not being too happy about it.
Seems like it's being defined now as just another loft / condo development with one or two options for low income folks.
Either way, I'm glad they could save the building, I've driven by there hundreds of times and always thought it was such a waste to let the structure languish as it had.

A shot when I got home from work. Pythias construction as well as the missing bridge from the explosions Monday night.
And then I walked over there later. This is a a shot in the dark. (ISO 100k or something) No tripod with me.

Man that bridge implosion caused a bit of trouble didn't it? I live on the Mansfield-Arlington Border and the whole neighborhood heard it loud and clear.
Nice pictures, Brian. I like the new building to, from what little is visible so far.

I live in north Bedford (about 11 miles on a straight line) and my house rattled like a car ran into it. I thought for sure it was another mild earthquake because the sensation was very similar.

I was sad when they painted over the brick in the KOP building. I'm interested though to see what they will look like when finished!

They painted the brick? I'll have to check it out.

Here are current photos of the construction. Looks like there are some white "bones" on the interior of the place now, with grey paint on the interior bricks:

To keep moisture entirely out, these old brick walls have to be sealed in some form or fashion. Our firm has used a clear type of sealer that keeps the moisture out yet, leaves the brick looking natural. I noticed that the old window openings have been closed up with concrete masonry units (CMU, or to the layman, cinder block). The block would never match the brick. Another thing is that the architects may plan to have these walls covered with gypsum board (sheetrock), and if that is the case, there wouldn't be any need to use an expensive clear sealer.

Sure thing! The two buildings are connected by and open air staircase and shared deck area, covered with a wooden trellis. It's really great looking! The new building is a nice match the old restored wonderfully.
