Good Morning, any one else having this issue ? If so what browser and version are you using? IF you are not experiencing this issue.. what browser and version are you using ?

In the Fort Worth Forum > Projects and new Construction > commercial on page 11, the top comment EMPTY space extends down 4 or 5 full pages before picking up on the next comment.
The IS the same behavior we experienced on the TRANSPORTATION just before transportation completely caused MS IE 8 to crash repeatedly. I am using version IE 8.0.6001.18943IC 256 .
So this time I was able to do a screen capture.

I'm using IE8 Version 8.0.6001.18702. I didn't notice any problems in that OMNI thread or the previous transportation thread either. I saw no white space like your screenshot. I visited the thread a couple times.

Thanks, maybe it has something to do with my IE 8 security settings... I will revisit.

I've had the odd big space show up pretty regularly in topics when I'm using my work computer with IE7 and I also experienced the crash in the streetcar topic. It also seems like it is loading slower than before the upgrade, but it is more than tolerable. No problems whatsoever when I view the forum on Firefox on my laptop at home.

I have looked at the site numerous times in IE8, the latest version of Firefox, and on an iPhone. I have not experienced any of the problems that have plagued some of you. I will admit that the mobile application works fantastic.

This board is doing strange things today. When you go to post it puts takes the old post and spreads it over pages with a few letters on each line. It's been doing this all afternoon.

There's also a problem with the Uptown thread that causes IE under Windows XP to crash. Same problem exists with the Streetcar Circulator thread.

I will continue to look at these pages and forums with different browsers, but I have not been able to get the forum to behave strangely.

I ran into the streetcar circulator thread locking up my windows explorer last night at home. Quite frustrating as I thought it was my service provider but then I realized the rest of the net was ok. I will check it again when I get home see if it is still happening. I have different browser and platform than at work.

I have been looking at the forum with IE8 tonight and I am not having any problems looking at the threads and posts reported to be with problems. This is frustrating to me because I would like to fix the issue if I could see it.

I notice two things when I get home. First, I still can not access the streetcar circulator thread without locking up. Second, I see where one of my posts made from work add a lot of extra lines. I am running a slightly older version of IE at the house. Suppose I will start having to use it at the office too when on this website, but there are some applications that don't run in a 64 bit environment on IE yet so I really prefer firefox.

Transportation Topic... now locks up and I have to close down IE 8 (reset for default security and other settings).

Also when I visited Website and Forum topic... and wanted to add a FAST REPLY - the browser window looses focus and all the text is in a 1 inch column far left. Right side screen is blank white. The browser regains focus when I make the browser box... slightly wider. FAST REPLY looses focus and the only way to leave a comment is to use the FULL EDITOR.

Loose focus means the browser window fails to position the text blocks, icons, buttons in their normal forum spaces. So the whole page contents is scrambled on top of each other on far left side. Only way to get the browser to REfocus is to manually resize the IE8 browser... to larger.. then it again repositions the 'Add Reply' Preview Post buttons to mid center... etc.

In html code the page is layed out in the /head and /body
The /HEAD is: The Upper banner with IP BOARD, next line banner [Architecture in Fort Worth] tab [ Forums] [Members] [Calendar] line remains normal or static.

The /body is where all The UNfocused objects reply comments/ editor etc

I get 1 message in the lower left corner of the page after clicking Transportation Topic saying that "Waiting for the page " but its at that time the IE 8 browser locks up and the only way to recover is to click the upper right red X button. The systems comes back to tell me ... the program needs to close, or do I want to wait. I click the option "Close". On restarting the IE 8 browser.. it first opens with the request to restart the program at the last URL (this forum) OR open at my home page.

Hope this helps.

Installed Safari for PC - this forum works great (by the way I did not know that Apples Safari Browser would work on a PC until a friend mentioned it)

I use IE7 and I have the exact same problem as described above. AndyN's postings have the loooooooong sections of blank space and even on posts he made a couple years ago I find this. It might have something to do with his default footer /signature if he had a tag line or link in there or maybe something fell on the enter key when he was editing his profile.

Also, when I login so that I can add a reply, the issue with FAST REPLY occurs and I don't even need to click on FAST REPLY, just mousing over it throws everything to the left of the page. Can't even sneak up on the FULL EDITOR button without it panicing. I would suggest AndyN go in using IE on a 32bit system and redo his default signature/footer and see if that clears it up. Either that or maybe I need to move to IE8.

I also tried running this thread on a Windows 2000 IE6 platform and it completely locked up the browser.

Some observations about the above issues that I've noticed recently:

The threads with the distorted appearance almost always happen with or following a post by Andy.

Add the Villa Deleon thread to the list of threads that crash my browser (the only other one I remember is the old Streetcar thread.

And this continues to only happen on my work computer with IE7. No issues with Firefox or IE8 on my home laptop.

I was able to reproduce the issue with the posts that had had extended whitespace.

Looking through the HTML for the affected page, I noticed that there was an unclosed <span> tag on posts from Andy. It was in the section of code that specified his group (Moderators). I searched for a post from Prairie Pup, another fine member of our moderator team, and saw the same behavior. I made a copy of the page on my laptop and added the missing tag; loading that into IE gave a properly-rendered page.

Basically the the PHP that generates the pages is not closing that span element. The resulting HTML is not "well-formed" and browsers do not all render poorly formed HTML in the same way. I remember when Netscape Navigator used to (intentionally) not render tables in your page if your table elements were not correct. IE would render the table by making assumptions about where the missing tags should be. Some preferred IE's approach as being more satisfying for users; however, others thought that approach was a mistake because it allowed programmers to write sloppy code. Navigator's approach was intended to make it easier for programmers to recognize they'd done something wrong.

We could theoretically make a change to Invision's PHP to correct the problem, but we don't have the resources to test the code to ensure we wouldn't be breaking something else and it would be overwritten at the next upgrade. This is something Invision should be able to correct.

This is pretty much a moot point now, but my computer at work was upgraded to IE 9 about a month ago and I hadn't had any more problems viewing anything on the forum.

On one or two of the threads, of late, I've been having "scrolling" glitches while trying to type out a posting.  After typing a word I hit the space bar and the website page "jumps" up.  I thought it might be my PC but this glitch doesn't occur while doing posts on other threads.  My temporary solution is to type all the words together with no spacing then go back and manually create spaces between each word.  Weird.  Anyone know what's going on technically?

Is there any chance it's a hardware issue with your keyboard?

Could be.  I thought it might have something to do with the "insert" key, but I tried that.  Didn't work.  Incidentally, there's no page jumping as I type this.  I don't think I'm hallucinating.

The only issue I've had lately is being unable to copy/paste links or text into the reply box in Internet Explorer on my computer at work.  I don't have the same issue in Chrome on the same machine, on my Chromebook at home, or in Safari on my phone.

I think I've figured out the problem.  When I press the "Num Lock" button on my keyboard and then go back to this posting the space bar won't work and the words run together.  Then when I disable the Num Lock, exit this Web page, then return to the posting the glitch appears to be self-correcting.

But my keyboard can't be the source of the glitch.  When I create a Word document and press down on the Num Lock button and start typing there is no spacing problem.  So it must be connected to this Web page.  {I post here using a desktop PC, not an I-phone or I-pad, if that makes any difference.}

[JBB, in the past I've had that problem of lack of pasting on this Web page while using Microsoft Edge/Internet Explorer; then using Firefox or Google, the pasting problem goes away.  But I don't have that problem with IE anymore, it seems].

Back to my computer keyboard problem.  Not happening on this thread, but on other threads I type one word, hit the space bar, the page jumps, my Num Lock lights up, and then I can't use the space bar between words.  My sentence goes like this:  Nowisthetimeforallgoodmentocometotheaidoftheirparty.

So I go to Word, type text, copy and paste.

I notice when using Google Chrome on my iphone to post to the forum, it removes all of my apostrophes. It allows me to type the apostrophe but after I hit Post they are removed. I think I saw this on one of Austin55s posts too thats assuming he didnt intentionally write that way. Chrome on my laptop works fine. Anyone else notice this?

They may have fixed this in a later release from 3.4.6 but I can't complain too much since I don't personally pay for the license (thanks John!).  I may have found some release notes for IPS Board Suite versions 4.5.1 and 4.5.2 that resolved this but guessing they want more money for some of these upgrades.

Fixed issues using apostrophes in certain language strings.

The new versions of IPS Board Suite should fix these issues.  However, for a while my host would not support the new board.  I have been looking into this, and my host now supports the software.  The issue with upgrading is that IPS now charges an arm and a leg for the software.  I am still considering this, but since I don't charge a fee to be a member, nor do I charge any type of fees on this site, we don't have any advertising, and this site only generates about $100 per year of income to me, I am hesitant on upgrading.  Another factor is that I'm 63 years old and if I retire on a fixed income, I might not be able to support the forum on that limited budget.  This is something for me to think about.  For the record, I have no plans to retire anytime soon.  Also, if you want to see a similar forum on the new software in action, go to the Houston Architecture Forum.

John,

As you (someday) think about retirement, here’s a few ideas I thought of that you might consider some of which could help offset ongoing expenses.  I remember fondly the time I saw Pete Charlton at the Exchange Building giving a lecture and I bought one of his really cool maps CD’s.

  • Have a member-only paid content section: lectures (online / in-person), newsletters, walk/ bike tour tickets.  You could do different tiers either a full package that includes all content and 4 tours or pay as you go and you go ala carte or monthly.  I think it would be fun to have an insiders group that met on Zoom if we had a themed meetings or discussion topics.  Once COVID passes, doing some field trips / meet-ups again would be cool but maybe something project-specific or area-specific.
  • Apply for a small grant for fortwortharchitecture.com as an educational resource
  • Start a Kajabi site for hosting paid teaching content and doing series on preservation and research topics that would appeal to an audience Fort Worth and beyond.  Sort of an insiders how-to explanation of more complex type teachings and research.
  • Gofundme / donation link sort of like Wikipedia uses and those who want to contribute can chip as their budget allows.
  • Outsourcing application work on HCLC Design review cases and doing either a suggested donation or nominal fee as a small % of overall project budget
  • Start a Youtube channel and do "follow me" videos on Fort Worth architecture tours, bike tours of neighborhoods, City topics, interviews with key people in the industry, discuss past and present preservation cases.  Not sure what kind of traffic it would get but would be a cool way to document in real life your expertise.
  • Guest lecturer at UTA / TCU / TCCC
  • Write a book

Nitixope beat me to the punch. I've been enjoying the forum for more than a decade for free, and I would gladly chip in towards site maintenance and so on. I'm probably not alone among the forum members who feel this way.

Nitixope and elpingüino, thanks for the suggestions.  When COVID passes, we will get back to the monthly forum meetings.  I actually had not thought about Zoom Forum Meetings.  I think I mentioned this before, but I have already written some local HCLC nominations, and that work has gone back for several years.  If you remember, I was on the HCLC's Designation Committee and we wrote quite a few nominations for several properties.  I already do Downtown Fort Worth Tours as a tour guide with that group.  However, before COVID, I did a few for visiting Convention Groups as requested.  I have been charging a fee for those groups.  I also have been doing a few speaking engagements for small fees, as well.  I did my first one virtually last Wednesday, and they are paying me a little bit for that.  So, you can see, I have planted a few seeds, but I will keep those suggestions in mind.
