You could probably get Justin Boots to sponsor it.

"...and is not possibly controversial."
Too much public art is selected for that very reason. The only controversial thing about most of it is why did it cost so much. I'm not a fan of controversy, but if avoiding it is your only goal, then the only solution is to do nothing.

Allow me to explain. I support the idea of a sign.
The controversy will more than like arise from a divided public who either like or undecided about the image of Fort Worth and those who dislike or want a change in the image of Fort Worth.
If "FORT WORTH" is selected as was in the case of "HOLLYWOOD", then there will likely be less bickering.

I looked into the cost of fabricating a giant bronze boot. Since it was pointed out that a pair of 37' feet tall boots (not bronze) are on display in San Antonio, this boot was bumped up to be 40 feet tall. Much bigger than originally envisioned. 5 million (dollars) should do just about cover it. Any takers? :-)

I sometimes stop at WestBend while biking along the Trails. This artwork should be interesting. Article about it in Fort Worth Business Press.

Fort Worth's newest piece of public art was installed last week, a statue of Wild West outlaws on Houston Street downtown.
Bud Kennedy column in the Star-Telegram: Butch, Sundance and the Wild Bunch in Bronze
"Tourists have already taken to the sculpture, sitting in Butch Cassidy’s or the Sundance Kid’s lap."

You can tell it's not a Sundance property. If it were, the Joy Police would be guarding the statue against such intrusions.

With developments such as Trinity Vision/Panther Island, Tabachin Ribbon, Lancaster Corridor and Will Rogers "Riding in the Sunset", Fort Worth possesses some interesting and worthwhile publicly accessible objects of art in its collection.
A formal dedication planned for this month, December 2017, here is the latest addition to this collection:

I for one am glad our public art programs aren't this, ummmm.... grandiose?
I know most city projects include a public art component these days, but what would be y'alls thought on requiring any project that receives public incentive tax dollars dedicating 1% of their projects budget into either:
a ) a public art piece
or
b ) a contribution to FW Public Art?
Or how about any commercial project in-excess of say $50M being required to do the same?

I think requiring any project not tied to public incentives, regardless of size, to have a public art component would be a tall order in property owner rights friendly Texas/Fort Worth.
I like your first proposal, but on the list of issues I have with what is required of publicly incentivized projects and how that money is doled out, a public art contribution is pretty far down on the list. It's a broken system that needs to be fixed.

I thought it actually was funded that way -- some percentage of one kind of city spending. I will look it up.
edit: 2% of capital improvement projects

I believe that 2% is for capital improvements on city projects, not necessary "private" projects that are getting tax dollars/abatements/rebates/etc. But perhaps I'm wrong.
Anywho, sometimes it's fun to throw ideas out like spaghetti on a wall to see what sticks or stirs conversation.

A sculpture of Red Steagall is going to be installed outside the Coliseum
Why? He isn't from FW. It is great that he is a legend, but so are a lot of other people that actually are from FW and/or live here

The idea for a new mural with Paxton roping a tornado sounds pretty cool though...

$40k-50k doesn't seem like an insurmountable dollar amount.
Heck, I'd wager that a crowdsourced/gofundme effort in conjunction with the Main Streets Arts Festival could raise that.
Anyone have any clue on how that could be made to happen?

Not 100% related to the topic at hand, but this seemed the best place to drop this reminder,
tomorrow is Fall Gallery Night here in Ft. Worth.
some of my favorite venues in the past have been:
#4 ArtSpace111
#6 Fort Works Art
#7 Ft. Worth Community Arts Center
If you really want to make an "adventure" out of it, 12 galleries/venues are on or within a block of Trinity Metro Route 2 which I believe runs every 15minutes. An additional 3 galleries are probably no more than a 5-10min walk from the bus route as well.

While not part of gallery night, if you find yourself out and about near Camp Bowie and Hulen check out the certainly unique Grackle Art Gallery (http://www.grackleartgallery.com/ ) 3 blocks off Camp Bowie and 1/2 block off Hulen at 4621 El Campo. They should be having an open event from 7-11pm.

I have really appreciated the growing mural scene here in Ft. Worth. A mural recently went up in Atlanta honoring hometown musicians Outkast
https://www.cnn.com/... - Top Stories)
Ft. Worth has certainly left it's mark in the musical landscape with those who has called her home or helped spread her name.
Who do you think deserves a mural, and where?
Willie Nelson
Ernest Tubb
George Strait
Bob Wills
Roger Miller
Pat Green
Ornette Coleman
Stevie Ray Vaughn
Townes Van Zandt
John Denver
Leon Bridges
Van Cliburn
Kelly Clarkson and LeAnn Rimes are the only female musicians I can think of with tenuous links
