Funny you bring that up, because I was JUST thinking about that today.
I already have an American Airlines HQ made, but was thinking of revisiting it... just not in downtown, rather around the Cultural District.

Definitely Downtown. 4,000 - 5,000 workers. Something big perhaps in the 1.4M sf on a standard CBD block.

One interesting thing I came across during this discussion is that the AMR name no longer exists. AMR Corp. was the holding company that owned American and American Eagle, but since the merger, the name of the new company is American Airlines Group.
Somehow I don't think "AAG" has quite the same ring to it...

It's currently in mind.
I think I'll do TWO versions of this. One for downtown and the other for the Cultural District

Stemming off the discussion of the Sinclair building getting a hotel conversion.
You can see this graphic from the historic commission clearly labels this lot as slated for a hotel and sidewalk improvements.
Assuming it would be about the same height as STS or Burk Burnett, it'd be a very thin building, about 50 feet wide.
Austin, that same group was the first to do something with that site. After they purchased the Scott-Harrold Buiding/Cox's/Lerner Shops, they demolished it for a parking lot for the Sinclair Building.
The notion of "spatially restricted" areas has been something that has intrigued me for a long time in light of the way that downtown blocks are laid out so symmetrical.
The proposed hotel illustrates that the entire block is not needed to build a high rise as was the general practice during Downtown's 1980 building boom. For instance, Burnet Plaza is thin and tall structure that uses a fraction of the block, so does Carnegie.
One area of downtown that has a nice feel to it is the open area that was created when the Landmark Tower was demolished. The resulting space allows for a panoramic view of the surrounding and beautiful early 20th century buildings. Instead of a high rise on this new open air square, I would rather a new wedge highrise be built in the block that contains the Waggoner Building to overlook this space that I think could be further improved upon. I suspect in the end, the Landmark Block is too valuable a space to remain permanently undeveloped.
There are other spatially restricted areas within Downtown for which two come to mind: the proposed Jett Project will be a wedge highrise and the spatially restricted area where a structure was once proposed to be built on the block that has the First Christian Church.

Rename, I have a correction for you. Burnett Plaza was built on a full sized block. If you look at historic pictures of the Medical Arts Building, or www.historicaerials.com, you can see that Burnett Street used to run between W. 7th and W. 10th Streets. It was closed with the construction of Burnett Plaza to allow the building to open into the park. The street used to be where the granite paving exists today. The former edge of the park is defined by the starting of the grass, trees, and plantings.

That would be visually stunning as you are driving westbound on Lancaster; however, the building is very tall to be over there by itself.

Regarding those Summit area towers, that whole area has gotten even worse traffic-wise with the coming of the CTP. The genius engineers decided to run two exits worth of traffic through Summit (Forest Park in both directions), and now it's a parking lot. A huge tower like that would only make things worse!

I really haven't noticed any traffic issues. Doesn't seem any worse than it was to me.
But it is something to think about, at least...

Waggoner TowerHeight: 492'Floors: 35Site: Remaining L-shaped space in W.T. Wagonner's block.Type: OfficeMy original plans for this was to make it an ultra modern tower. But nah... It just wouldn't fit.- *Ground floor: Retail, Bar (on Houston St.), Office*- Design: L-shape, one curved side, pillar top crown.- Style: Postmodern / Chicago School- Facade Material: Light blue curtain wall, Corten Steel*I think I'm going to start showing what exactly I'd have in mind for the ground level*
So, first of all, I like the visual concept and would be thrill to have this addition to our skyline.
Two requests that I would make:
1 - Waggoner Tower should be the tallest building as of yet to be constructed; so I would like it to go vertical at least 700ft to make a more pronounce impact. Also, the open air crown, is it practical?
2 - Waggoner Tower N, E & W Elevations are terrific. The S Elevation would be nicer fit in my view if it looked more like the original Waggoner Tower. Maybe like the lower floors of the Omni Hotel for example.

Although I'm fine with the height (because of the possibility of an even taller building on the former Landmark Tower site) I may add a few floors up top just to see what it looks like.
The crown is just ornamentation and I wanted the short end of the building to look different just to continue its distinguished look.
EDIT:
You know what? I think I may add something to that crown, after all...
I'll make a couple revisions later. To see shat you think.

And this is what it would be at 50 stories, around 700'... honestly, I'd rather have it at the original height.

That would be A LOT of space.
Not a bad idea, though. I'd actually put that art gallery on the space fronting Throckmorton.
But I'm looking for something bigger for that space.

- There's a rotating clock just like the original. However, this one would be larger with 4 LED screens.
- The entire color scheme, which is pretty unique compared to the glass and brick we have in downtown, matches the original. From the orange-red base, to the grey, black, and white of the rest.

I think at that size, with the full block of the size rising the whole, it feels a little bulky, perhaps a setback over top of the garage where the towers floors are closer to 170x170 rather than the full 200x200. Creative idea though, Landmark Tower was'nt to far away from looking like a nice building. I'm not 100% sold on the sign on the roof though haha. Just a bit bold.

It's interesting that you are proposing a modern version of a retro 1950's digital clock. For the record, by the design standards set forth for Downtown, rooftop signs are not allowed. The city is currently working on an ordinance (discussed elsewhere on the forum) that will make signage on building faces above the 10th floor completely outlawed.

Is a clock a sign? Did Sundance have to get permission for their digital clock?
#196
Posted 14 September 2015 - 03:36 PM
I think that's a shame. I love the old, cool rooftop signs (like the Dickie's sign) and I loved the Landmark Tower clock, the blue flame sign, etc. I knew of both the existing rooftop ban and the upcoming further restrictions and feel a little sad about it.

"...the latest news that the bank is relocating from 777 Main into the new building". JTR
Even when they named the City Center Tower for them, I never really felt like D. R. Horton was a Fort Worth company. Still, sorry to see them leave.
Fort Worth's skyscrapers are today 30+ years old; and new buildings are accelerating their decline in being competitive. Should Sundance and 777 Main undergo some radical makeover/appearance as was done for The Tower and Cash America?
IMO a fresh look is now in order.
