Or perhaps the economic factors just aren't in place for it to happen. (Dead horse = beaten)

Jeriat, it may be time for a "speculative" AMR Tower in DTFW. Do you have one in your desk drawer?

Funny you bring that up, because I was JUST thinking about that today.

I already have an American Airlines HQ made, but was thinking of revisiting it... just not in downtown, rather around the Cultural District.

Definitely Downtown.  4,000 - 5,000 workers.  Something big perhaps in the 1.4M sf on a standard CBD block.

Yes..AMR = American Airlines

One interesting thing I came across during this discussion is that the AMR name no longer exists. AMR Corp. was the holding company that owned American and American Eagle, but since the merger, the name of the new company is American Airlines Group

Somehow I don't think "AAG" has quite the same ring to it...

It's currently in mind.

I think I'll do TWO versions of this. One for downtown and the other for the Cultural District

I wanted to include the museum to add another attraction to the center of the city, plus I just think it wouldn't be right to have the new headquarters without the museum.

Not totally in love with the design, myself. May revisit it later. But this just gives you an idea.

Stemming off the discussion of the Sinclair building getting a hotel conversion.

You can see this graphic from the historic commission clearly labels this lot as slated for a hotel and sidewalk improvements.

fjbtN5A.png

Assuming it would be about the same height as STS or Burk Burnett, it'd be a very thin building, about 50 feet wide.

Austin, that same group was the first to do something with that site.  After they purchased the Scott-Harrold Buiding/Cox's/Lerner Shops, they demolished it for a parking lot for the Sinclair Building.

The notion of "spatially restricted" areas has been something that has intrigued me for a long time in light of the way that downtown blocks are laid out so symmetrical.

The proposed hotel illustrates that the entire block is not needed to build a high rise as was the general practice during Downtown's 1980 building boom.   For instance,  Burnet Plaza is thin and tall structure that uses a fraction of the block, so does Carnegie.

One area of downtown that has a nice feel to it is the open area that was created when the Landmark Tower was demolished. The resulting space allows for a panoramic view of the surrounding and beautiful early 20th century buildings. Instead of a high rise on this new open air square, I would rather a new wedge highrise be built in the block that contains the Waggoner Building to overlook this space that I think could be further improved upon. I suspect in the end, the Landmark Block is too valuable a space to remain permanently undeveloped.

There are other spatially restricted areas within Downtown for which two come to mind:  the proposed Jett Project will be a wedge highrise and the spatially restricted area where a structure was once proposed to be built on the block that has the First Christian Church.

Rename, I have a correction for you.  Burnett Plaza was built on a full sized block.  If you look at historic pictures of the Medical Arts Building, or www.historicaerials.com, you can see that Burnett Street used to run between W. 7th and W. 10th Streets.  It was closed with the construction of Burnett Plaza to allow the building to open into the park.  The street used to be where the granite paving exists today.  The former edge of the park is defined by the starting of the grass, trees, and plantings.

That would be visually stunning as you are driving westbound on Lancaster; however, the building is very tall to be over there by itself.

I know the height is over the top for that section of downtown, but it's like I said, I have plans for it. Think of it as The Avengers. I'm taking individual buildings and setting it up for a "new" neighborhood in the future.

Regarding those Summit area towers, that whole area has gotten even worse traffic-wise with the coming of the CTP. The genius engineers decided to run two exits worth of traffic through Summit (Forest Park in both directions), and now it's a parking lot. A huge tower like that would only make things worse!

I really haven't noticed any traffic issues. Doesn't seem any worse than it was to me.

But it is something to think about, at least...

On the right is the all residential section of this development. Comes with a 20 floor condo tower with the first floor being residential and restaurants. The other 4 floors are used for indoor recreational, leasing, gym, clubhouse, and private theater.
On the left is the 4 story retail/office area. The section with balconies are all high end stores, while the side that is just curtain wall is the office section of the building.
The center is an entrance to a muli-level garage, much larger than the existing.

My Summit and Burnett Parcels concepts (along with one of Austin's creations and my American Airlines HQ concept) together.

W.T. Waggoner II (teaser)

Since the former Landmark Tower site is going to be parking garage (as far as we know) and Austin made a tower for what was on the remaining block of the W.T. Waggoner Building, I decided to throw my hat in the ring...

Waggoner Tower
Height: 492'
Floors: 35
Site: Remaining L-shaped space in W.T. Wagonner's block.
Type: Office

My original plans for this was to make it an ultra modern tower. But nah... It just wouldn't fit

So, first of all, I like the visual concept and would be thrill to have this addition to our skyline.

Two requests that I would make:

1 - Waggoner Tower should be the tallest building as of yet to be constructed; so I would like it to go vertical at least 700ft to make a more pronounce impact.  Also, the open air crown, is it practical?

2 - Waggoner Tower N, E & W Elevations are terrific.  The S Elevation would be nicer fit in my view if it looked more like the original Waggoner Tower.  Maybe like the lower floors of the Omni Hotel for example.

Thank you.

Although I'm fine with the height (because of the possibility of an even taller building on the former Landmark Tower site) I may add a few floors up top just to see what it looks like.

The crown is just ornamentation and I wanted the short end of the building to look different just to continue its distinguished look.

EDIT:

You know what? I think I may add something to that crown, after all...

I'll make a couple revisions later. To see shat you think.

I'm not done with this, but here are the elevations...

Houston%20Street%20_zpsfuncw2qj.jpg

And this is what it would be at 50 stories, around 700'... honestly, I'd  rather have it at the original height.

Still trying to figure out what I'd want to do with the space fronting 7th Street. Any ideas for something over 9,000 square feet?

That would be A LOT of space.

Not a bad idea, though. I'd actually put that art gallery on the space fronting Throckmorton.
But I'm looking for something bigger for that space.

XTO Landmark Tower
Height: 847' (with clock)
Floors: 51
Site: Former Landmark Tower site
Type: Mixed-use

Landmark1_zpsamopkq2b.jpg

This stood out a lot more than I thought it would...
Landmark2_zpsebomkgxr.jpg

Landmark7_zpsjwzympbe.jpg

Down Throckmorton
Landmark3_zpszt4crpzl.jpg

My take on the already planned 800 space garage. It's covered with the same tile pattern to match the rest of the building. There's a mesh material, painted to match the pattern, for ventilation. The reason for the color choice is something I'll get to in just a second. Of course, there's retail space on every side of the ground level.

Landmark5_zpscik8yoje.jpg

Landmark%20Elevations_zpsccbbhzld.jpg

Now, obviously this is inspired by the original Landmark Tower. Took some basics from the original and made a few enhancements:

- There's a rotating clock just like the original. However, this one would be larger with 4 LED screens.
- The top of the building has a step back design, just like the original
- The entire color scheme, which is pretty unique compared to the glass and brick we have in downtown, matches the original. From the orange-red base, to the grey, black, and white of the rest.
Landmark%20Sims_zpsgpg478m8.jpg

And just a quick glance at what it would look like with the Waggoner Tower I last made...
Landmark9_zpsryxm2gnd.jpg

Landmark10_zpsll6pzhmk.jpg

- Ground floor: Retail, Bar (for Houston St.), Office
- Design: Basically a taller, modernized Landmark Tower
- Style: Post-Modern
- Facade Material: Grey, White, and Orange-red tile covering (mesh for the garage), black curtain wall, LED for rotating clock.

I think at that size, with the full block of the size rising the whole, it feels a little bulky, perhaps a setback over top of the garage where the towers floors are closer to 170x170 rather than the full 200x200. Creative idea though, Landmark Tower was'nt to far away from looking like a nice building. I'm not 100% sold on the sign on the roof though haha. Just a bit bold.

It's interesting that you are proposing a modern version of a retro 1950's digital clock.  For the record, by the design standards set forth for Downtown, rooftop signs are not allowed.  The city is currently working on an ordinance (discussed elsewhere on the forum) that will make signage on building faces above the 10th floor completely outlawed.

Is a clock a sign? Did Sundance have to get permission for their digital clock?

I think that's a shame.  I love the old, cool rooftop signs (like the Dickie's sign) and I loved the Landmark Tower clock, the blue flame sign, etc.  I knew of both the existing rooftop ban and the upcoming further restrictions and feel a little sad about it.

If you think this is bulky, you should see my original design. It was a beast.

I really hate that ban. We SHOULD have signs above the 10 floor. It takes away from what could be...

"...the latest news that the bank is relocating from 777 Main into the new building". JTR

Even when they named the City Center Tower for them, I never really felt like D. R. Horton was a Fort Worth company. Still, sorry to see them leave.

Fort Worth's skyscrapers are today 30+ years old; and new buildings are accelerating their decline in being competitive. Should Sundance and 777 Main undergo some radical makeover/appearance as was done for The Tower and Cash America?

IMO a fresh look is now in order.
