Drove by Meacham yesterday afternoon as saw that the old hangar was undergoing some form of demolition. The corners of the building (with muruals) were still up and the roof is still up - it just looks like they tore out anything on the inside and the glass/steel hangar walls. Anyone know what's up with that? Hopefully, they are just going to give the place a make-over and not demo everything, since it is the oldest (I think) and most unique building at Meacham. I'll take some photos today.

It looks like they might be just getting ready to refurbish the place and put some new walls on it.

The Landmarks Commission approved back in October major renovations to be done to the building. This includes raising the roof 14 feet to accommodate larger planes. The windows were supposed to be replaced with like kind, but I'm not so sure this is happening

Okay, I see in today's Star Telegram what is up:
"A company owned by Fort Worth financier Robert Bass is renovating the historic airline hangar at city-owned Meacham Airport, which originally housed the company that would become American Airlines."
Unfortunately, the story is behind a firewall today, so I can't actually read it and I'm not going to buy a newspaper.

Stopped by today after work. A lot of the roof is gone - it is just mainly the braces there now. There is a lot of demolition going on - all of the windows are out and they are ripping up the concrete base (or at least that's what it looks like to me). Piles of brick and debris everywhere. I took some photos, which I shall post soon.

Please post them. I have been working overtime and I haven't had a chance to get to the other side of town lately.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the new super sonic business jet (Aerion) parked outside the hangar. Very exciting!!

I don't really know where that big pile of bricks came from, since they don't match the structure. You can also see the frontloader tearing up the cement slab:

This shot shows that the roof is really all gone except for the braces:

Very nice building. I am glad it is being saved.
In that spirit, here is a really cool 1933 American Airlines promotional film - from back in the day when passenger flight was still a novelty. And, as an extra treat, it features brief footage of both the Fort Worth and Dallas skylines.

When the City's Designation Committee was actually an official committee in the City of Fort Worth, they were the ones who submitted the application and worked to get the building designated as a City of Fort Worth Historic and Cultural Landmark; otherwise, anyone else going into the site might have just demolished it to build a new hangar. With the designation, the current tenant had to comply with the Secretary of Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation, and get the work approved by the Historic and Cultural Landmarks Commission.

More news for Meacham,
The Aviation Department has completed the design and will soon begin construction on the renovation of the Meacham International Airport Administration Building.
Construction is expected to begin in January 2015, with plans to complete the project in early spring of 2016. The estimated construction cost is $17.8 million.
Meacham's current administration building was built in 1968 as a two-story building with the capability of becoming a five-story building. There have been no updates to the original structure, save a first floor addition that was completed in 1982.
The renovation will remove the 1982 addition, increasing the size of the public apron for aircraft parking. To compensate for the loss of this space, a third floor encompassing 23,000 square feet will be added.
The lower level, currently used as basement space, has been designed to allow natural lighting on the east, south and north ends, making the space more attractive for leasing.
This renovation project will also address many deficiencies within the building that include an outdated heating ventilation and air conditioning system, cooling towers that are under constant repair, lack of fire protection systems on the ground level and second floor, and Americans with Disabilities Act accessibility concerns.
During the renovation, the Aviation Administration and Meacham Operations offices are moving to a temporary location beginning Oct. 9, 2014. The mailing address and phone numbers for both groups will remain the same.
The other businesses in the building will be moved to temporary locations later this year in preparation for the renovation.

Aerion has an 817- phone number for phone inquiries. This commercial segment is looking very promising, legacy carriers might need to be concerned about their highest-tier customers allegience.

Is there a possibility that this operation will be based out of Meacham?
#27
Posted 16 November 2015 - 10:20 PM
The production and assembly facility? No, becuase Meacham does not have a long enough runway. Alliance does, but I'm not sure they have enough room for the facility itself (article mentions needing 100 acres)
#28
Posted 17 November 2015 - 12:22 PM
I bet they could find 100 acres at Alliance. It has the runway. It's got Bass backing which may favor a Ft Worth location. Perhaps the 100 acres could be split into parcels and still reasonable workflow.

The highlighted area is 121 acres. However, I'm not sure it's available, someone else may own it or something. There's also loads of land on the West side that I'm also unsure about.

You're correct.
Is there a place anywhere, taking in account of the large aerospace workforce here, better than Alliance or maybe JRB/Lockheed?

TurboFAN - is fuel efficient and quiet, but slow
TurboJET - is fuel inefficient and loud, but fast
Supersonic jets in the past, like the Concorde, have used TurboJETs
The military now has supercruising TurboFAN engines in the F-22 and F-35
And Supercruising TurboFAN engines are being developed for the new commercial supersonic jets
Aerion is using a new supersonic TurboFan, from GE, to hit Mach 1.4, using 2 engines ?
Boom, wants Rolls-Royce, to develop a supersonic TurboFAN to hit Mach 2.2, using 3 engines ?
The Aerion/GE sounds like its really happening
The Boom/Rolls-Royce engine is still pie-in-the-sky
And Richard Bransons Virgin Galactic wants to use Booms fantasy jets ?
