'After a weeklong battle over last-minute policy riders, the Senate passed a major water bill in the early morning hours Saturday Dec 10 that includes emergency aid for Flint, Mich., and drought relief for California.
The nearly $12 billion measure, which authorizes 30 new infrastructure projects around the country, now heads to the presidents desk.'

Selected projects, reflecting results of the Corps and Office of Management and Budget evaluations, then are submitted to the relevant congressional appropriations committees as part of the Presidents budget for a given fiscal year. Congress then decides whether to appropriate funds to construct specific projects.
Project authorization does not necessarily lead to project appropriations; there are many authorized water projects that are awaiting appropriations. Authorized projects that have not received appropriations often are referred to as a backlog. The current backlog of authorized, but unfunded, projects is estimated as needing approximately $60 billion.
Appropriated funding in any year for a particular project often is not for the entire project amount. Projects authorized in WRDA bills that do not receive timely appropriations for construction can be kept alive for long periods of time, as local governments and their congressional representatives can ensure that small amounts of money are appropriated for continued planning.

Shouldn't be hard getting the money to support a project spearheaded by the son of Fort Worth's Republican Congresswoman Kay Granger when the Republicans now control both houses of Congress. How easy can that be?

Bad: There is a $60 billion backlog of already authorized yet unfunded water infrastructure projects.
Good: Republican controlled Congress and Trump supports infrastructure improvements.

And yet, the reworking of the rebar for the Jacksboro Hwy v-piers seems to be stalled again. I'm no bridge engineer but I'm wondering if they designed too complicated to build or if this system has been done before elsewhere?

I think the issue with the bridges is much worse (or in more honest terms, costly) than has ever been acknowledged in public.

In the city council meeting agenda tonight is a mention of the temporary at grade train crossings. They were initially supposed to be there 24 months, starting Oct 2013. It's now anticipated they will need to be there until Feb 2019, at $2,000 a month for maintenance.

Lost in the shuffle with all of this is that city bond money is paying for a large portion of this project. And once again, costs are likely completely out of control on a city funded construction project with no one being held accountable.
Shocking.

Not much has changed in a year
Nor will it. This is why I never got excited about this project from the beginning. What could possibly go wrong with Kay Granger's son at the helm?

My suggestion still stands that this thread needs to steer clear of politics and personal attacks. We can start a page to discuss the political aspects of the project on the politics subforum.

'Republican Reps. Kay Granger of Fort Worth and Michael Burgess of Lewisville voted in favor of the bill, while Reps. Joe Barton of Ennis, Kenny Marchant of Coppell and Roger Williams of Austin voted against it.
The measure passed by 309-118, with 103 Republicans voting no. The bill now heads to the Senate, where it is expected to pass with bipartisan support and head to Trumps desk. The bill must be signed by midnight on Friday or the government will shut down.'

Interesting to watch over time. The cranes working on the brdige stood still for a very long time, but seem to be moving a lot more in the final frames and you can see visible progress going on with the piers.

Sounds like the contractor has the same concern I've had for a year now!
After being on hold for about a year, “the bridge cages here are well underway. We had a tough issue going on with the contractor who was making a lot of design claims and problems with it. Our team, the city of Fort Worth and TxDOT were saying ‘no it’s the way you’re building it,’” Granger said.
“We went ahead and did a [6 ft. tall, 8 ft. wide and 20 ft. long] mockup of it, we cut that section open and sure enough it showed the design was very good. So, with that the bridge contract is now going full speed once again,” he said.
I'm not at all convinced these bridges will be structurally sound!

Not sure of the details, but if they've actually stopped construction and done a deep dive on the issue, I doubt they'd go forward if there were any doubts, especially where safety is involved. Once you spook an engineer they (we) tend to get very conservative about safety.

I completely missed that mention about an "office tower" in the article when I first read it. That's great but have to say I did not expect to see an office tower come out of there given more mature office locations in Downtown and Near West Side. Also, when I read "tower" I think that means "taller than it is wide".
I expect Panther Island will be impressive but take decades to fully build out, across multiple economic cycles.

Is this your hope or are they actually going to meet with TRV? My guess is this is your hope, and I would certainly concur. Wind and solar power are the waves of the future of power generation and distribution.

For the engineering nerds out there
Work is progressing on the Henderson Street and White Settlement Road bridges.
In mid-July, concrete was poured for the first full-scale V-pier for the White Settlement Bridge. The bridge contractor used 200 cubic yards of concrete. With crews placing the concrete on both legs of the V-pier simultaneously, the pour took several days to complete and cure.About 15,000 gallons of liquid nitrogen were used to keep the concrete cool as surface temperatures of the truck drums dropped below 40 degrees. Additional pours are anticipated over the next year, with a new pour taking place about every three weeks.
