Last estimate I heard is that the average cost of replacing rail is $1 million for each mile, not to include bridge work. Keep in mind that not only includes rails but also ties (concrete or wood), new ballast and lots of labor.
Considering a typical urban arterial roadway is at roughly $5 million per mile, some could consider that a bargain...
