He is playing a sold out show in NYC in February, would love to catch a local show sometime in the Spring...

Coming Home has been in pretty heavy rotation on KXT lately. I didn't he was local until earlier this week. Love that retro sound.

I noticed this week that he now has 2 songs available on iTunes and Spotify and his major city shows (Chicago, NYC, Boston, LA) are all sold out. He's coming through Texas in May and that includes a show at the Southside Ballroom in Dallas.

Leon Bridges will be on the Late Late Show tomorrow night (3/25). It's the show after Letterman that starts around 11:35ish. From what I understand it's his first TV performance.

Video of his performance last night. Very cool. Love that retro sound. This is my least favorite of the 3 songs he's released, but I still like it a lot.

Great story on Leon Bridges, the local studio where he recorded his coming album, and the Fort Worth music scene:

His album is linked on a First Look basis over at npr.com. It will probably disappear at some point but it's good listening.

Not to be outdone by the alternative press; Here is the S-T's Preston Jones' more in-depth article on Leon Bridges:

Maybe Fort Worth has learned its lesson and is paying more attention to the wealth of local music here...

It sold out too fast for me to jump on it, just like his show this week at the Belmont in Dallas. I think that one sold out in 10 minutes. His November show in Dallas sold out this morning as well.

They haven't announced any lineups for this year, but I'll be shocked if he's not a musical guest on Saturday Night Live this season.

They're definitely promoting him.  I hope they start to fold some other songs into it though.  People will start to tune Coming Home out if they hear it too much.

Leon Does Willie:

Leon Bridges does his part to advance "the image of Fort Worth" while waiting to go onstage at the prestigious Gershwin Awards ceremony where Wilie Nelson was honored.

Leon was on the AMA's tonight, and was featured on a new song with Macklemore. What a meteoric rise.

Leon's new ad for Squarespace debuted in the first commercial break during the Grammys tonight. A couple of nods to Fort Worth in there:

Anyone else hear the ticket segment on him recently? Was great, but I don't think FW was mentioned once. Talked about how he played shows in Deep Ellum and was the best artist from Dallas nationwide in the past few years. ehhhh....

Which show? They're more likely to talk local music but I would be surprised if it was The Hardline - one host went to TCU, the producer owns a bar on the south side, and they're the show regularly gives a lot of love to Fort Worth.

So we just got back from the Toyota Music Factory in Irving where we saw Jon Batiste and Stay Human (the house band for the Late Show with Stephen Colbert) and Leon Bridges.  First time at the venue, it was decent but drinks were ridiculously expensive (probably true of any major venue these days).

Stay Human was the opening act.  They only did 4 or 5 songs, but they played for an hour; that band knows how to jam.

34863383_1687379261310957_77766763067998

There was an extended break for setup of Leon Bridges's band....like 40 minutes.

I would say his music sounds better live in person than it does in the studio; it was clear they were drawing energy from the crowd.  He recently released a new album so in addition to the more familiar, established songs, there was a lot of new material.  He does a nice job on his love ballads, with lines like, "I know you're shy, you can be shy with me," and "Do you think I'm being foolish if I don't rush in?"  He portrays the thoughts of a guy who's tentative and unsure with the ladies, kind of a refreshing change from the macho stuff you hear in a lot of songs these days.  I've been a fan for a while, but I think my wife enjoyed the concert just as much as I did.

It was a great show last night! In my opinion, Toyota Music Factory is way better than AAC... parking was cheaper, traffic wasnt too bad coming or going and obviously it was built specifically for concerts. I was up on the lawn seating. Now we just need to get Leon booked at Dickies Arena!

I read the article last night.

I recall being told he worked at Del Frisco's Grill before he struck it big, but they mention Rosa's in SWFW.  In the article it says he walked to his first gig from Rosa's to Pop's Safari and that it was 7 miles.  From that I surmise he worked at the Overton Ridge Rosa's which is 7+ miles away.  The other one, in my old neighborhood at McCart and Sycamore School, is 9 miles from Pop's.

His story is amazing.  I've always found his music challenging to listen to, especially the first album.  Now I understand why:  He has no musical training, he literally makes his own rules, which don't necessarily follow the conventions of modern pop music, at least in his early work.

I also thought it was interesting that his first two singles, Coming Home and River, use the original demo recordings he made at Shipping and Receiving.  The article says one reason he signed with Columbia is that Atlantic wanted to re-record those in their studios, but Columbia liked the versions that first caught their attention.

I think it's been mentioned upthread, but the video for Coming Home was filmed all over Ft Worth, many locations I am very familiar with.

I recalling that Bridges has or had a recording connection with Niles City Sounds.  For those who are unfamiliar with this part of Fort Worth History, Niles City is now a part of Fort Worth and is located just east of the FWSY.

Now if you ever feel like thumbing your nose at Fort Worth, eat and drink at the Niles City Bar @ FWSY. :P

My wife and I went to the concert on Saturday. Leon has really upped his performing - working the crowd, dancing all around the stage and stepping back to let his band do their thing. It was a really fun concert. And Abraham Alexander was great. Hopefully hell release more of his music soon. He only has a few songs on Spotify.
