Everyone, I'm proud to announce that late yesterday afternoon, I was released from the rehab hospital.  I can now read and post here on the forum and I can work on the website.  It's great to be alive and home!  I want to thank everyone for keeping the forum active in my absence.

I have a long way to go.  I'm walking with a cane and my endurance level is very low.

Welcome back John!!!!!  I am so glad you are better!  While you were away I also had some hospital time.  Bad allergic reaction to blood pressure medicine.  I was only on a ventilator for three days so I can't even imagine what you have been through.  Take care of YOU!

From what we've heard, you've come a long way.  We've missed you and I'm certainly glad to see you're on the mend.

Best news we've had in a long time, John. You have been the subject of many conversations and, I'd bet, even more prayers. Let us know if we can do anything to aid in the recovery. Your cane sure could come in handy at certain municipal meetings facing important votes. Hang on to it for the future.

The cane will help, but I'm just letting everyone know that I don't have the endurance to sit through tonight's City Council Meeting and vote on the Stockyards.  I will watch it online.

John -

Because of time constraints I haven't been following the forum as closely as I used to.  So I am only now reading this.  I had no idea you were in an accident.  THANK GOODNESS you are okay.   You are not just a neat person, you are a Fort Worth treasure.

But reading this makes me want to encourage you to consider something that will hopefully not be necessary for many decades:  consider making arrangements and have things in place that, if something really horrible were to happen,  your site and this forum would continue to be archived and available online.

One of the wonderful things about the Internet is that knowledgeable ordinary people can make available niche icontent that in previous times was too expensive to disseminate through traditional media.   But the downside to all of that is that once the auto pay on the server bills stops paying all of that information can disappear forever.

Your site and this forum provides not only a wealth of crowd sourced reference material about Fort Worth, it is also a snapshot of current local events and the passions surrounding them.  This will be a wealth of information for future historians looking back on our own time.

Back when I first got online around 1997 the Star-Telegram had a wonderful site that had lots of great information about local history - the name if I recall correctly was "Virtual Texan."  One day the site was no longer there - which is a shame and a loss.

The cost of keeping a site archived online is minimal - and my guess is the material is of sufficient quality that there are local archives and institutions that might be willing to do so.  But, obviously, you would need to make such arrangements ahead of time as you control the content and the associated intellectual property.

I have started making similar plans when it comes to Radio Dismuke - and, in fact, earlier this year I transferred ownership of the station over to a newly formed non-profit organization Early 1900s Music Preservation  I still operate the station and I still have complete artistic control over its programming and content selection. But, in the end, ownership, all financial matters and ultimate accountability rests with a board of directors and not me.  It wasn't an entirely easy decision to make.  But the station had grown to the point that it had become something much larger and important than one person's mere hobby.  The problem was that everything about it was dependent entirely upon me both in terms of financial support and all work.  And that not only jeopardized the station's future in the event something happened to me but it also imposed significant limitations in terms of terms of its potential growth and the scope of its mission.  I personally can only do and afford so much.  The station is now 100 percent listener supported and my own financial contributions now go toward funding new stuff rather than day to day operational expenses - which was the first objective.  The second part of the transition we are still working on is a bit more time consuming:  my cross training people on everything I do and how the technology works so that, if needed, somebody else could step in do it.   And the non-profit's board of directors has a lot of exciting ideas in the planning phase for projects beyond just Radio Dismuke.   Radio Dismuke had become something much bigger than Dismuke - and since I care a great deal about it I had to make sure that its survival and future was no longer limited by and completely dependent upon Dismuke.

So my suggestion, if you haven't already considered doing so, is to give some thought to what will eventually become of all of what you have accomplished here.

Again, thank goodness that an issue like this is something hypothetical and not the reality it could have been.

Dismuke, before my accident I had been thinking about archiving the site and finding a way to keep it going.  I had not done anything about it before the accident, but since I have been home, I have been thinking more seriously about it.

What does archiving the site mean?  End of the Forum?

Archiving is what would be done after a website or, in this case, the Forum, is no longer updated.   The point of doing so is to make sure the content remains available even if it is no longer being updated.  Hopefully that won't be the case with this site or this Forum for many decades to come.
