I saw the story on TV and read it in the Star-Telegram. To the best of my memory, I think all of their buildings are new, and not historic. If you look at the video, you can see the two structures are actually metal buildings.

I assumed that the building wasn't historic since I haven't seen a single article that identified it as historic.

Yes, it's gotten a reprieve. From a Sept. 23 FB post from Representative Ramon Romero, Jr.:
This past Saturday, San Mateo Catholic Church opened it's doors for the first time in almost 3 years. While the church will now open for special religious holidays only, community members of HD90 gathered to worship and celebrate their long fought battle to keep the church in operation.
