Is it the Charlton Medical Center new Patient Bed Tower? (they had tower cranes out there for a while for some new construction…see post at the top of page three of this thread…I think we were guessing on this a few months ago when the cranes were up.)

Pretty clear sky last night. Thought I would try this. Taking a video with my 5D Mk II with my 400mm lens with a 2x on it. (800mm focal length)

This little video clip is just 38 seconds long and has no meaningful content. Except there are not many people taking videos with 800mm lenses. What looks like crap on the right side of my sensor is actually crap. I need to clean my sensor again. When I take photos I have been cropping the right side of my frame out lately. Harder to do on a video. (for me)

From my balcony in downtown Fort Worth

You know the drill. Set to 1080, pause, let load, fill screen, view. Unless you are paying for a T1 Spectrum line. (Yes I made that up)

That was awesome. Can you capture the transition from late evening to night.

This morning's storms rolling in. As they got to Fort Worth first, it gives me my favorite set up. Dark and cloud between here and Dallas but bright in Dallas.

3 images from the same shot. (Shot in raw with 400mm)

I got a few of those too, not blown them up yet. I was amazed how clear that shadow box effect made tall buildings in the distance so perfectly clear.

As a companion set to the photos above, here is a plane landing at Love Field and a crop of that shot. It is the grain mill at Beach and 121 in the foreground.

Brian, your last image that you posted of the Downtown Dallas Skyline really shows how really tall the AT&T Phone Building is on Bryan Street. It is on the other side of the Uptown Buildings in front of it and it appears lighter than the rest on the left hand side of the photo. It used to have a "communications drum" on top of the building, making it taller. That "drum" has been removed in recent years.

Sure thought I might could get the Cowboy stadium from my new place on the North (and East) side. Just because I knew the Carter Burgess building was blocking my view. Well it still is. In fact now I am EXTREMELY close. in fact I see The Ballpark in Arlington. (Just the top of it, mostly billboards.) I also see the new coaster at 6 flags. I may wait until there is nobody below me, an hold my camera out a few feet from the building for a shot.

Actually, the "new" coaster at Six Flags is partly 21 years old. They spent the entire 2010 season and off-season to rebuild the Texas Giant and it is now called the New Texas Giant. It's taller, steeper, faster, smoother and all-around more awesome than ever! You can see Titan in your shot, which IS the newest complete roller coaster construction. The Oil Derrick, Superman Tower of Power and Texas Chute Out can also be seen in your shot. Being an amusement park junkie, I do like the shot. :)

Saturday night, I raced home from my elections results delivery to check out the sky with Storms around. No rain on me to speak of but a neat orange sky with the rain and sunset.

Far West Fort Worth as seen from my new balcony. This is Brewer High School in the back. I don't know exactly what is in the foreground. Lockheed? NAS Fort Worth? Am I peeking in secret hangers? Do I need to disguise my identity? Shall I flee?

Much of the foreground is JRB Ft. Worth, at least up to and including the runways.

Here's a Google Map 45-degree view of the interesting 2-tone building on the far right. I think your shot just misses the aeroplane on top of it. Zoom out from there to get your bearings, Captain.

The looooooooong building in the back is Lockheed. Understand they're facing a sizable layoff. :(

Thanks for including those beautiful Hercs!

When I moved to Fort Worth from Plano over six years ago, not only did I find this great forum and its parent site "Architecture in Downtown Fort Worth", I found this thread and have off and on followed it since. Six years ago I had no significant camera gear to speak of, but a latent interest in photography, given my grandmother was, in my opinion, a photographer on par with Laura Gilpin or Eliot Porter. I got a decent camera last year, and on Friday FINALLY got a good telephoto lens! Haven't shot anything spellbinding with it yet but I did have some fun over the weekend learning of its reach and sharpness. Here's a couple of snaps. The lens is a 55-300mm racked all the way out.

In this shot, when I pixel peep I can clearly make out a Motel 6 sign behind the mid-rise building. I found out it is at Las Vegas Trail and I-30. Not horribly far away but not a stone's throw, either! I also found the heat shimmer slightly distorting the distant buildings adding an interesting touch:

I took this following shot this afternoon of the Amon Carter Stadium construction. Sorry for the mess of wires but I walked to this location and this is the best shot from this vantage point:

I know this does not compare to Brian's lofty perch in his domicile, but hopefully I'll get some better telephoto opportunities in the future. Right now I'm just having fun getting acquainted with the new toy...er, lens. :)

Nice shots Art. I admit to being a bit lost, however.

Plenty of long distance variables ranging from pollen levels to temperature variations. And no predictions about the viewing quality of the air.
You get what you get, for the most part. The skies have been great the last couple of days. I would have predicted otherwise. I would think that as dry as it is, there would be too much dust in the air for good distance viewing. But nope... has been great. My only regret is that I have been too busy to enjoy it. Yesterday, as I looked out my office window, I saw one of the prettiest skies I had ever seen. (Really blue skies, really white clouds...) I had only an i-phone for shooting it.

Yep, had I taken those two shots above just a day later, the view would have been considerably more crystalline. Oh well, no way to predict sky clarity, I suppose.

Yesterday was gorgeous. I was on top of my building yesterday looking toward DTFW, longing for my camera with its new lens! Today might be similar, but alas I did not bring the cam to work.

I remember we had days like this last year when I had my first DSLR and was out shooting in the hot afternoons several times a week. A bright blue clear sky is interesting, but the puffy clouds like we had yesterday just speak "Texas summer" to me, as I remember skies like that growing up in Dallas. Seem to also go with "let's go swimming!" :)

The pics above were taken from the Wedgwood neighborhood south of I-20.

Just took this shot off my balcony looking Northwest. Lake Worth. Ritchie Brothers Auctioneers. Looks like they have some cranes to unload. I would love one. Why? So I could climb to the top in different locations and take pictures, of course. Plus cranes just seem like a great toy to me.

Get a dirigible, much easier to move to new locations.

Nice clear night. Put my 2x on my 400 5.6L. It works terrific, except... You then have to manually focus. Which is quite tricky with a huge lens on a fairly cheap tripod. (touch the lens and it it sets it in motion.) Easier in daylight really.

Brian,

That is a serious lens. My brother-in-law is one of the head security guys at Six Flags, can you see if he is sitting around drinking coffee? LOL

Mike,

I bet your brother in law has some security tales from 6 Flags if he ha been there a while.

My wife worked there for a summer like 145 years ago. My only connection is that I bought an IRA's worth of stock in 6 flags ($6,000.) just before they went bankrupt a few years ago. I got out for 500 bucks 3 months later. (Silly that a stock still has value until it is ALL over.) One of the reasons I bought the stock was finding out that it was 10% owned by Bill Gates. I figured he wouldn't let it fail. He did. I have always loved 6 flags.

Brian,

Your correct he has some crazy stories about the guests. He is 53 years old and this is the only place he has worked since he was 16. He got his degree in Criminal Justice from UTA and just stayed at Six Flags. He also has some of that wallpaper or stock as it has been all over the board.

Your story reminds me of when McDonald's purchased Boston Chicken for a short period of time and I bought 10,000 shares at $1.00 each and thought that McDonald's would turn it around. The stock was declared worthless and I did not even get a chicken. LOL

The Omni Hotel in Dallas has really capitalized on wild lighting. I can see the action with my bare eyeballs at night. (From Fort Worth) Here is a shot I just took at daybreak. Each frame (only one shown here) has different colors. I like it.
Not a super clear shot as there was a bit of wind on a long exposure. (my building swaying too much for my ISO setting/shutter speed) But good enough to see what I am talking about.

Maybe what this is what they meant about distinctive lighting for the new Omni. They weren't talking about the Fort Worth one, they were talking about the unbuilt (at that time) Dallas one.

A shot last Saturday. A very clear day, but windy and unstable tripod for the 800mm.

I think this is the I-30/ 820 area on the West side. Have never seen all that stuff in the far distance.

The hill with the black lines going down it is the landfill on the north side of I-30 at Linkcrest.
