Tilt-Shift is not a new thing, but I just stumbled across it today and thought I'd share.

It is a photographic technique where the lens is tilted/rotated relative to the image plane and also shifted/offset relative to the that plane. I'm not entirely sure what that means, but one effect that can be achieved is that pictures can be made to look like they're shot of miniatures.

Here are examples a ran across today:

Slickzine: Tilt-Shift, Shrinks the world around you

Smashing Mag: 50 Beautiful Examples Of Tilt-Shift Photography

I played around with a couple web-based tools that try to simulate that effect. Mine were nowhere near as cool as the ones in these articles but I may upload them and post them here anyway.

Has anyone else used this to create images you would like to share?

Eh, I tried this one out some time ago. Just blurred the top and bottom and jacked up the saturation by 25%. Taken from the Bass garage. I think the higher you can get the better, but a lot of the model look depends on the subject. If you can get cars and trains and full bloomed trees it help a lot. I've also learned to avoid the sky, it often ruins the effect.

Maybe tomorrow I'll try and shoot some more. Been meaning to try for a while.

I've never experimented with it and I don't even remotely understood it, but I've always enjoyed seeing tilt shift pics.   The first time I saw it was a few years ago when Disney's theme park group started a blog and released a series of tilt shift pics and timelapse tilt shift videos of their theme parks.

I was also going to throw in that you can use a tilt-shift lens to make perspective corrections.  Actually, when I was in college, I was trained in architectural photography with a view camera.  This is old school technology (including film) that uses the same basic principals.  I do not have one of these lenses and I have been using Photoshop over the last several years to digitally alter my images.  These are the only changes that I have made to the photos.  All of the latest updates to the site have pictures that have the perspective adjusted this way.  You can also see these pictures on the Fortwortharchitecture.com Facebook Page.

Yeah, a tilt-shift lens is just a tool - a lens that can be, well, tilted and shifted relative to the plane of the imaging surface (be it film or digital).  You can use it for perspective correction, as in professional architecture photography, or you can go nuts with it with the whole miniature model effect.

A lot of both approaches you'll see out there are digital recreations of the effects (both perspective correction and the miniature effect), because real tilt-shift lenses are pricey.

I went out today and tried to get the model look in a lot of places. All these pics from today 6/17.

I find that digital recreations of the tilt-shift miniature effect are made or broken depending on the content of the photo - since it's a blur applied to the top and bottom of the frame rather than an actual depth-of-field effect as in a real lens (where the blurring is based on distance rather than position in the frame), I find the effect works best in images where there's not a lot of height and the photo is at a high angle to the ground.  It's also tricky to approximate when at a low angle, as the real-world effect is based on distance and a miniature would have different distance/blurring for the foreground and the background.

Austin, I think some of your newest are quite convincing - the content of the shot matches the effect nicely.  Cityplace Plaza, Cityscape, and TCC especially.

I agree for sure Kevin. I probably could have had a better result had I targeted exactly what I wanted to be blurred but I just took the easy way out. Ain't nobody got time for that!

A real lens costs near $800.

You climbed a lot of stairs yesterday!  Great shots.  I really like the one of Henderson.

I agree on that - it's more work than I want to do.  :)
