FWBP reporting the bridge lighting is going to be upgraded to prevent it from shorting out in rain storms and also considering installing color changing LED's. The bridge has become a bit of a landmark and is a really popular place for photographs.

Mayor Price - ever the politician. Blowing 200k on a project that wasn't designed right is not a good thing. This is right there with the Hemphill connector - the city blows money like Hugh Hefner and nobody bats an eye. How much money could they save if they hired someone to QC some of these projects?
It's a bit Pricey.
...I'm sorry.

Sometimes I just don't get some of you... The 7th Street Bridge is beautiful and seems to have cost a LOT less than the new bridges in Dallas. LED color changing lights sound awesome. It is often the backdrop for NBC5 News during the Today Show and the midday news as well as other times. I guess you'd rather have 7th looking like it did 20 years ago? Ugh!

Oops, ignore my "like" on Austin's post. I agree with you.
Hopefully, the new lighting will have copper that thieves can't remove or access.

Don't get me wrong, I love the bridge and I think LED lights will be great. I just don't understand why they weren't included in the first place and why an educated person like the mayor tries to sell a $200k screw up as something positive, regardless of the outcome. Costly mistakes will continue to be the status quo as long as the city's leaders never hold staff accountable.

I thought that the 7th Street Bridge came in under budget and the City is spending dollars from the savings on the revised/improved lighting.

“TXDOT has returned $1.8 million in funds we sent them as part of the overage, money that wasn’t used,” Mayor Price said. “And we will use that to do the repairs.”

Most contracts and subcontracts have installation workmanship Warranties. What date did the bridge go 'Out of Warranty'. Or was this a designer flaw.
As mentioned above, Government Quality Assurance or Contractor Quality Control should have picked up on this type of design issue and corrected it by a contract change or modification.

I would assume the story about copper disappearing wasn't true.

Agreed! I went to the bridge lighting party a couple years ago and was surprised to learn the lights were not LED color changing lights...WHY in this day and age would you not include that in the original design?
I welcome the upgrade because I'm always noticing all the arches are rarely lit at the same time.

Perhaps as a more tangible memorial to the late Mr. Cliburn, the city should consider renaming the newly reconstructed Seventh Street Bridge as the Van Cliburn Bridge. What do you think?
Keep Fort Worth folksy
Dallas honors former Mayor Ron Kirk by name the Continental Pedestrian Bridge as the Ron Kirk Pedestrian Bridge.
Why won't Fort Worth name the utterly undescriptive named 7th Street Bridge to honor Van Cliburn? Don't be surprised when you hear that Van Cliburn home was the Metroplex; which is correct, but which does not place a stake on him for Fort Worth.

The bridge already has two names. It is called the West 7th Street Bridge and it also has Van Zandt Viaduct on the plaque.

Here's a Hometown by Handlebar article with pictures of all the plaques. It's no doubt still named for Van Zandt, but not frequently referred to as such.

Something (and something significant) should one day bear Van Cliburn's name.

Bridges and tunnels are the preferred way that cities pay honor to exceptional individuals.
Neither does much for me or more importantly that it would be a symbol seen by tourists and residents of the perpetual bond between an iconic international figure who called this city his home.
Van Cliburn was an exceptional individual.

I don't have any problem with a name change and your points are well taken. If you are serious about this, why don't you propose this to your City Councilperson?

The test was just one lighting fixture within one of the arches.

The lights are very visible on the NBC broadcast. It looks like the whole north side is colors, and a few arches of the south side are. It's currently red & blue and the original white.

I drove down this evening and the hole south side was in color while the north side was all white. It looked really cool driving west towards W7th. Maybe it's just me, but it gave me the illusion that I was being transported to someplace completely different.

I saw the changing lights on the bridge from Channel 5's Skycam from the Stayton. I was going to try to get down there to take pictures, myself, but I never made it.

Photographs have to be hosted at a location where a URL is provided for the photo. You upload the photo to that location then click the picture icon in the post. That will add the code automatically, and then you copy the link location into that blank.

I think they are still doing testing. From Channel 5's Skycam over last weekend, the lights were individually changing colors within each span. On Monday night, they were all purple. Then on Tuesday, they were more green, with some purple spans. Tonight, it appears that the entire bridge is changing colors at once.

Have you gone down to look at the bridge yet? It doesn't usually stay one color for long. I do a little driving for Uber so I cross it several times a night and every night it has a different color and/or pattern. Last night was the best so far. it was alternating different colors from one section to the next and within each arch section is had a flowing pattern with alternating colors going the opposite direction.I'm thinking I prefer all white or all multi-color instead of all one color.
I do miss the all white bridge, but it's amazing how the new lights seem to make FW's skyline look more futuristic when driving east. Especially with Mallick Tower in the background and when Pier 1's crown is lit up in color.

I crossed it last night. Looks nice. I'm sure whoever sets the lights will try some different things. I was under the impression that each arch would get a color, but apparently each light within an arch can be controlled individually. There's some potential for some interesting patterns with the way the cross braces in the arch are lit by the lights.

The local PBS station here in Austin replayed a really interesting documentary on the building of the West 7th Street Bridge. I knew it looked great, just didn't realize what an engineering and design marvel it was for those who designed and built it. I couldn't find the documentary on line, but I found the preview for it on YouTube. I'm sure it's been shown in Fort Worth by now, but maybe you could request KERA to play it again or post it online:

Also, it has some beautiful shots of the Fort Worth cityscape.

How about the "Alan Bean" bridge? or the "Leon Bridge(s)"?

.... Headed in the right direction.
Unless you included Fort Worth, the bridge could conceivably be apart of any of a generic 7th Streets in any town. It is not as if Fort Worth has the only 7th Street in Texas or beyond.

I've noticed that the majority of the lights on the bridge have been out for several months now... most night maybe 2 or 3 arches combined may be on and they are never the same color. Some areas have maybe 2 strands of light on. It looks really bad when you are driving through it now because it almost has the feeling of a project in neglect.
