This part was particularly interesting. There are a few locations I could imagine, the Convention center, or maybe Will Rogers, but if I had to guess, I'd bet they would take the road trip to UTA's great new facility.

Looks like only a marginal increase in seating capacity.  What'll they do if Trent Johnson manages to make basketball actually catch on at TCU?

Take the Villanova approach and play in a bigger arena when there are games against "prime time teams".  .

Since we don't have an NBA caliber arena (...yet), It would most likely be the Convention Center arena. I know it's not exactly the best arena in the world and it could just as easily be at Will Rogers, but at the very least, the CC arena is in downtown, which would be good for TCU and GREAT for visiting fans.

Just an idea of what TCU is doing and will do in the future

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Campus projects currently underway:

  • An attached annex to the Bass Building will almost double the space available to Harris College of Nursing & Health Sciences, which is currently in very cramped quarters.  The new building will be attached to the Bass Building by an enclosed atrium with interior sky bridges between the two at the second-floor level.
  • A new academic building between the library and Smith Hall will be an interdisciplinary building not attached to any one college, but used by all.  Mostly classrooms, but two TCU academic institutes will be housed there as well.  This project also encompasses rebuilding the eastern 1/3 of the library (the 1980's expansion), which will be attached by exterior sky bridges to the second floor of the new academic building.  There will be a decorative exterior courtyard between the two buildings.  The library will have a new ground-level entrance and the current entrance with its "mountain of front steps" will be eliminated.
  • Two new large residence halls for freshmen and sophomores in Worth Hills will be completed by August.  These have been discussed and pictures posted in previous threads.
  • The old dining hall in Worth Hills ("the Greek") is being renovated as expansion office space for Physical Plant.

Definite projects in the near future (1-3 years):

  • Beckham-Shelburne Hall will be demolished this summer and a new residence hall for upperclassmen (juniors and seniors) will be built in its place next academic year.  After it's completed, Wiggins and Tomlinson halls will be demolished and two new residence halls will be built in their place.
  • A new dining hall will be built northwest of the freshman/sophomore residence halls now under construction.  It will be located in an area that is now a parking lot.
  • After the above residence halls are completed, the remaining dorms and parking lots in Worth Hills will be demolished and replaced with 10 new customized chapter houses for the fraternities and sororities (the much-discussed "Greek Village").  By "customized" buildings, I mean there will be 4-5 standard building designs to choose from, and the chapters can select the design of their choice.  Two Greek organizations will share the same building, but their respective wings will be physically separate except for a shared entry hall and stairwell.  The Greeks will pay for the design and construction of their own customized chapter rooms within those buildings.  No pay, no chapter room.
  • Pond Drive will be eliminated and the area leading down to Worth Hills pond will be re-landscaped as park-like green space.
  • The Bellaire condos will be demolished and replaced by a muli-level parking garage.  Parking in that garage will be restricted to Worth Hills residents.  To keep the garage from being isolated and a target for crime, some TCU administrative offices and a TCU Police substation will be located there.
  • Daniel-Meyer Coliseum will be almost completely renovated.  This includes lowering the court, installing courtside seating, widening the concourses, adding lots of new ground-level concessions and restrooms, and building an extension that includes lots of new athletic offices and support spaces.
  • The exterior facade of the Walsh Center for Performing Arts (attached to Landreth Hall) will be redone to make the appearance more compatible with the prevailing campus architectural appearance.  (It's an architectural style called beaux-arts.)  Goodbye orange stonework.  Donor-funded $2-million project.
  • Most of the above work is scheduled to be completed in stages by the end of 2016.

Projects being discussed/planned, but not yet firm.  Disclaimer: Because plans are not yet firm, these projects are provisional and subject to change or even cancellation.  So don't hold TCU to any of these:

  • The Neely School of Business is planning a new major building joined to the east side of Dan Rogers Hall.  This is a $50-60 million project.  It will extend across Lubbock Avenue into what are now parking lots on the east side of Lubbock, which will mostly be eliminated.  Because TCU owns almost all the property on both sides of Lubbock between West Bowie and West Lowdin, it has the option to essentially buy the street from the city and close it to make room for the construction.  Smith Hall, which is now home to the entrepreneurial studies program and provides classroom space for the Neely School, will be re-tasked for professional development and other outreach programs that expand and cement Neely School ties to the Fort Worth and Metroplex business communities.  The entrepreneurial studies program will be relocated to the new building.
  • The interior courtyard between Winton-Scott Hall and Sid Richardson Hall may be converted to a glass-enclosed, climate-controlled atrium for display of student projects in the College of Science & Engineering and for program meeting space.  This is a relatively inexpensive project ($3-4 million).
  • The large parking lot bounded by Berry, Sandage, McCart, and West Bowie streets could become the future home of a TCU "Music Village" for the School of Music in the College of Fine Arts.  The proposed building would fill the entire city block.  The west side (facing the campus interior) would be academic space for classrooms, practice rooms, rehearsal halls, and faculty offices/teaching studios,  It would also include a landscaped interior courtyard.  The east side (facing Berry Street) would be performance space, with an approximately 700-seat concert hall and lesser side spaces for opera and choral performances.  This is another major project.  A certain amount of external money has already been raised for it, but it has a long way to go.
  • Another multi-level parking garage is under discussion for East Campus (in addition to the one in the Grandmarc), though size and location are yet to be determined.

True, but take this in consideration.

The new seating pit design will put the fans much closer to the action.  A 9k crowd up close can be deafening.  Ancient Greek amphitheaters have acoustical sounds which have marvel modern day engineers to this day.

Nothing is quite as intimidating as the opponent looking into and hearing an intense home court  fan base “eyeballs to eyeballs”.

Austin55 pointed out that there were two threads on this project, one in Public and Institutional and the other in Professional Sports and Recreational Activities.  I have merged the two threads and deleted Austin's posts providing the link back to this thread.

Why the delay with the renovations?

Because they want to play this season first and then do the renovations

Work is under way on this project, as the athletic department employees that office within the arena have moved out to their temporary locations- mostly within the football stadium and the former Pond Street Grill (aka "The Greek").

If you haven't seen what the finished product will look like, here's a link to the project details.

Also, regarding the temporary home court for the teams in 2014-2015, there hasn't yet been an official announcement made.  The word on the street, though, is that they'll play at least most of their homes games at The Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center, a FWISD-owned facility adjacent to TCC's Southeast Campus and Clark Stadium on I-20, about 8 miles from campus.  Not sure what the capacity is at Wilkerson-Greines- one website says 1,200 but then someone on a subscription-based site said 5,000.  SMU, for comparison sake, played some of their games during the Moody Coliseum renovation at the Garland ISD's Curtis Culwell Center, which seats 6,800 and is 15 miles from their campus.

You have to wonder if some of the higher-profile games, especially on the conference schedule, will be played elsewhere.

Best I could tell, TCU's last basketball game at the FW Convention Center was a win over Baylor in December of 2001, and I can't really recall any sports being played there since the Flyers folded and the Brahmas moved to North Richland Hills in 2007.  The capacity there is listed at 11,200 and it is 4 miles from campus.

I have no memory of TCU (or any team) playing basketball at Will Rogers, and I wonder how well it would work for basketball.  UTA's facility, while very nice, seems like a long-shot to me because of the distance.

One thing that I would like to see incorporated in the renovated DMC is some natural light.  Having some games downtown, even having some of the restaurants offering discounted or free tickets will greatly help attendance when the renovation is done.

It'll be really interesting seeing Big 12 games there. Takes me back to my HS days watching my Flying Wildcats win Whataburger/West Side Lions tournament year after year.

I have heard rumors that the scoreboard in the south end zone of the football stadium may be relocated, in part to improve the view out the windows of the new club area being built in the basketball arena- for use on football game days and for special events.
