This is a little graph I put together to show how FW's skyline has been altered over the years. What the graph shows is the combined height of buildings built in each year, starting in 1914 with Burk Burnett, to 2013.

Because tracking down some of the exact heights for these buildings was tough, I made it so 1 unit of height in the graph is 1 floor of a building built.

I'm sure I've missed a few buildings, but this is easy to edit so if anyone notices any notable emissions, point them out and I'll edit it in. All buildings in this are at least 5 stories.

Most of the data is sourced from Skyscraperpage.com

2013 includes topped out buildings.

So for starters, here's 100 years of skyscraper construction in FW-

all.png

The 20's were clearly a time of large growth in FW, with many now landmark buildings built. Then, there is a very large gap between 1931's T&P terminal and 1954's Oil and Gas building.

1974-1984 see's a large boom, with 5 of the "big six" being built, including 777 Main and Burnett in the same year, combining for the largest single year in FW history.

Another fairly large gap comes along, with the last decade seeing a few more large high rises, as well as a big set back with the Landmark implosion.

Here, I've broken it down a bit more, so you can see each building as well as a few years listed.

1914-1931's roaring 20's boom

The 70's and 80's boom.

The last 15 years of growth

So, that's that. Again, if you see anything that ought to be added in please give me a heads up, it's very easy to edit (made in sketchup)

So, what does everyone think?

Austin, where did you get your building heights?  I do have some corrections and additions.  You listed Hunter Plaza as 1920's.  I thought it was built in the 1950's.  In the year of 1978, we had two implosions.  Right after the new year, the Westbrook Hotel was demolished.  It was 7 stories and 80 feet tall.  In 1979, Stripling's Department Store was also imploded and it was 7 stories.  I think I can get a height for it with a little research.

John- Emporis has Hunter listed as a 1974 completion. That sounds way better than SSP's 20's.

I added those additions you mentioned, along with a few others (Caceria, Cash America, Lone Star Oil and Gas, Binyon O' Keefe, and T&P Warehouse) First post should be up to date.

If I have all of them, and I think I have most, Fort Worth's downtown area has 60 buildings of 5 floors and up.

Austin, you might check the main site of www.fortwortharchitecture.com for dates and at least floor counts.  If you go to http://www.fortworth....com/fwtall.htm, I have tried to get all of the heights and years as complete as possible.  Hunter Plaza was not built in 1974.  I definitely know that is not correct.  It was built in the 1950's and I think I can get the year of construction for it.  I seem to recall either 1951 or 1954.

Oh man I forgot all about that page, would've been better than SSP.

I'll do some more updating then :)

Hunter Plaza was originally built as the Fortune Arms Hotel in 1951.  Now, you have the height and the year.

I have a question.  What buildings are the CC Hotel 1 and 2?

RD, you are probably right. The dates match up.

CTBUH has a tool that basically does this on its own. It only counts 23 of FW's buildings (min height of 60 meters).  The blue line indicates tallest building. Demo'd buildings are counted (Landmark and Med Arts here). No proposed or u/c buildings are listed.

The page also lets you compare cities, for example here's Austin & Fort Worth.

Looking ahead, how will the next few years look?

- Trinity Terrace 3

- Frost Tower

- do the buildings such as the apartments at the foot of Pier 1 register (think they are 6 stories at highest), and XTO garage, and the hotel at 9th & Commerce.

Think that's it unless that thin building at 8th/9th and Houston gets built.
